Eric / Felipe,

Was unable to startup the turbine today. Message was 'Start Bad'. ECU batt was ok. Connected a 5 cell nicd to the starter motor directly, but no spin.

Came home and took out the turbine. Unscrewed the starter and put the battery to it again. This time it spinned ok. Screwed back the starter into the turbine and performed a good start.

Seems the starter was somewhat stuck. What can I do to avoid? The starter is not accessible enough to do this stuff at the field.

Thanks
Edgar

Hello Edgar:

Starter maintenance is a good idea. When doing your post flight at home, occaisionally remove starter. Please a spray of WD40 on a Q tip and "dab" the brass colored bendix on each side. Exercise this unit in and out. At the same time, with a clean thin rag over your pinky finger, press into the O ring and rub clean. Also, a good source of lubricant for this O ring is . . .believe it or not, the oil on your nose. Just rub a finger and then rub on the O ring. Laugh as you may, it really works.

Also, depending on your ECU version, you can test the starter motor before you button up the panels on your jet. Turn on the system, Menu up to the third screen. Start-Info-Tx-Run screen. Press Info then menu up to test starter. I make a habit of this. Start Bad = ECU battery (check voltage / connections) Bad Starter motor or perhaps the compressor / turbine wheel may have stopped on a spot which may be restrictive or resistant to spinning. Test starter will always let yu know.

Hopes this helps.

Best regards,
Eric Clapp
