Adrian,
Please buy the Zenoah 260 for this boat. For hardware etc, I'd drop Colin a line ozrcboatsupplies (dot com) he's a great guy to deal with and has some very nice hardware that will suit this boat at very reasonable prices. He's also a member on here too.

Prop wise, there are many choices, but I have had success with the following, 6717/3, 6719/3, 2714/2, 2716/2, H31 (cupped to 6.8"), 3016/2, 3018/2.

What have you got in mind pipe wise?? Personally I like the Quickdraw Hotpipe, they are very nice and very well priced particularly if you purchase the "kit". That said, if you were to buy the kit, you would either need to TIG weld it, or know someone who can weld it for you. They produce some good usable power. (I just bought another 3 kits I like them that much).

There are many other pipes, it all depends on how much you with to spend. To date I have used aluminium, steel, carbon fibre and liked them all.

Johno

The BM260 is a coppy of the zenoah. I have been told they will only rev to 10,000rpm or so. for your boat i would go with his 231PUM or 260PUM, or if you want to spend more and get the modded BM260. I have had mine going and it sounds good but still needs alot of fine tuning. Johno is going to be at the pond tomorrow so hopefully he can give me some tweeking pointers.
Steve

Stever, We can tweak away tomorrow mate, no problems at all. I'd be happy to have a play mate.

I did myself hear very similar things about the BM260 not revving out past 10k. Having not seen it first hand myself in the flesh, I really cannot provide comment on this particular engine. If it were to be the case though (not saying it is), the cost of new coils would probably run you up to the Zenoah new price anyway.

The other factor to consider, if this engine is limited in rpm (once again, not saying it is having never had one in my hands) then you might encounter some difficulty swinging those riggers props.

Johno

Nose blocks, IMHO, they are best made from hardwood. My personal preference for the task is Tassie Oak.

well my 260pum arived today so i have got that bolted up to the mounts now i am just wondering if anyone can help me with engine placement? it has to be as close to the front of the engine bay as possible and i also imagine that it wants to be as low as possible but this will mean having to cut the side of my tub to get the carby to fit.. also should i use the velocity stack? it seems to me that the carby will get a fair bit of spray from the sponson and i dont have a cowl... can i make some sort of angled atatchment that faces to the rear so water wont go in? also Johno if you read this can i get some pics of the inside of your radio box? i need some ideas for servo mounting/placement etc.

The wood splintered a bit when i drilled the holes for the engine mounts witch anoyed me a bit but its nothing that cant be fixed.
i mounted the engine as low as possible with as little angle as i could with the stuffing tube exiting out the back of the engine bay as i didnt want the stuffing tube going through the radio box.
another thing i need to know is the depth of the prop so i can bend the stuffing tube. is the centerline of the propshaft supposed to be at the same depth as the bottom of the rear sponsons?

Looking good Adrian, How do the engine mounts work??. Or have you got a big lip in the top of the stringers.
Look out Johno I think you might have a race on your hands soon.

Yeh there is a bit of a lip on top of the tub the tub is only 6m ply. the engine mounts are basicaly rubber gromets that push into holes drillen in the tub and then there are spacers that slide into the gromet and a bolt that passes through the spacer and threads into the engine mounts. yes johno watch out........

well i got my pipe, strut and rudder today the only problem is when i mount my rudder and strut there is not enough room on the transom, if i have my rudded hard up with the right rear sponson my strut is still to the left of the centre of the tub by 5-6 mm and the rudder just hits the rear of the sponson. here are some pics

Adrian, good work on the build, she is coming along well. I have been out of action somewhat over the past few days with some other "issues" hence I haven't replied to this thread for sometime. I am back on deck for the time being so here we go.........................

When I mount my engines, I run the stuffing tube through the radio box, it isn't a problem as it is sealed when glued in. This will give you a nice gradual bend in the tube which is what you're ultimately after.

You will definately need a cowl of some description or at the very least a carb cover. These boats are very susceptible to water ingestion through the carb, one sniff of water and it will shut you down. This can become a very frustrating problem, particularly so when testing new designs in cowls/carb covers. I have seen a 4oz hard plastic fuel tank used with some sucess however I have never played with it myself. If possible, go for a cowl with an integral carb cover (like in my pics earlier............I think I posted them for memory). I have in the past played with moulded carb covers that attached directly to the carb mounting bolts, but vibration kills them everytime and when (and you will) spill the boat, they will generally rip right off the carb ruining you day whereas a full cowl, if mounted correctly will separate from the boat with minimal to nil damage.

What I do in this situation (when the rudder and strut don't fit on the transom) is to totally do away with the right side bracket of the strut. This will NOT give you any mechanical or running problems but it will give you enough room to mount both in the limited space available. The strut is acting like a running surface and is supporting the shaft, so running with a bracket on one side is no problems. (I have done this a few times on various riggers no problems, this method is also often the case on the smaller 21 riggers)

Alternatively, you can cut the rudder mounting bracket and utilise two mounting bolts for that, however I'd be very cautious of this strategy as there is ALOT of load on a rudder assy whilst running. I would go as far as not to recommend this method at all, but I will share it for the purpose of information.

My suggestion, do away with the right side of the strut bracket and all will be fine

Johno

Thanks again johno for all the advice. Although I have already mounted my motor and it is on a bit more of an angle than yours do you think it will b alright or should i change it and run the stuffing tube through the radio box witch will b a pain because i will have to patch the old holes up?

By all means try it the way it is mate, don't go through the hassle of pulling everything out, patching holes and re-doing it just yet. I may just work out fine the way it is. There is only one way to find out. If there are problems with the way it is done that you identify through operation, then address the issue.

You're not too far off the water now mate

Johno
