hi there,

well for short, AFP doesn't start
here's my system first:

Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Intel q6600
4GB ram
8800GTX
Audgy2 (and later X-Fi xtreme Music)

the problem lies most likely in OpenAL, because the log files end with "openal: init". I've also found a small program that plays a sound file with openal, and that doesn't work either.

I've try updating the drivers for my Audigy2, and also upgrading to a X-Fi Xtreme Music (also with newest drivers)

Everything i tried (except for deactivating the soundcard in the hardwaremanager) leads to a complete hang right at the start of AFPD

Thing's i've tried:

Installing it to a different directory
undo all write protected files
re-install drivers from audigy2
swap audigy2 for x-fi (with newest drivers)
(re)install OpenAL from openal.org
run AFPD as administrator
run AFPD with Alchemy

I hope that someone recognizes this problem and can help me

Hi Kombat, did you install any addon? Which patch did you install? With Vista, it is better to disable UAC before installation of AFPD, addons and patch.

Please also post you tmlog file here for diagnosis. You can find the tmlog file in the AFPD program folder and open it with a text editor like notepad or word. Thanks

I have the version which includes Addon 1&2 allready, no other addons. I've installed the patch 1110709, however it doesn't work before or after patch. The version number noted on the CD is 1.11.7.1
UAC is always disabled on this machine.

right after a second the game window stops responding, goes to a black and then a white screen, and has to be terminated.

I've played an hour today, and i found out that if i reactivate my soundcard after the start, and then re-activate the music, it runs... but just the music, not the sound though (which would be the only thing i'd need anyway)

ah sorry, that's the patch i've installed. I was looking at the update's filename when i wrote my post. I suppose 1110709 is the reverse of 1.9.7.11

Your tmlog says that you installed 1.11.7.9 Pls uninstall and reinstall AFPD as per the procedure and try 1.9.7.11

however, the filename of the update 1.9.7.11 from the link you posted is afpd1110709.exe, which is the file i still have on my desktop.

i'll try re-downloading and re-installing it though

Look slightly further down the page and you'll see two other patches 1.9.7.11 and 1.8.0.25 The uninstallation/installation instructions can be found right at the bottom of the same page. If you only have addons 1 and 2, patch 1.9.7.11 will be sufficient and won't take up so much resources as 1.11.7.9 I would recommend 1.11.7.9 only if you have the latest addons 3 and 4

another short question. Since the version on the cd is 1.11.7.1 already, can i even downgrade that to 1.9.7.11 with the patch?

In this case, after you install the 1.11.7.1 main disk, there should be no need to apply the 1.11.7.9 patch, but you can. The difference is 7.1 has soft shadows enabled by default, 7.9 its turned off.

I have feedback the issue to IPACS and the initial feedback is that they will have to look at the openal/creativelabs/vista issue. They will take a a few weeks to resolve it. I will keep you updated
