I am curious how critically everyone treats the prop balancing for the APC E props. My approach is per a short online video I saw on prop balancing, 1st get the tips balanced by insuring the prop will rest level in the balancer. 2nd check the hub by resting one prop tip at 1 o'clock and find the heavy blade by watching whether the prop passes 12 O'clock or 2 O'clock if it moves, up blade hub is heavy if it passes 2 O'clock. Once the hub is balanced it should rest anywhere you put it.

I personally dont balance my props, but I also dont mount to the drilled hole as its usually off center which results in the largest component of imbalance.

I mount to the larger diameter molded recess which is just ahead of the drilled hole that the small rings press into. I find this diameter is on center which really improves how balanced the prop is when running.

I recall some glow props needing nearly half the hub removed to balance because the hole was so far off center!

Hi Brian,

Sorry I dont have pictures handy at work to post.....

Anyways, with the Pletty you have a very short shaft that the prop can slip over which doesnt protrude past the hub with the prop on. The shaft also happens to be 8mm which is what Tru-Turn's tiny little aluminum rings that go in the spinner backplates are. Those tiny rings also happen to fit snugly in the rear of the prop (the same spot that the APC adapter rings go that come with the props). So I then just push the prop onto the Pletty shaft with that aluminum ring in the rear and its much better centered than using the drilled out hole. The bolt holding the prop doesnt help to center the prop or do anything but hold the prop on.

When I get home I can probably find some pictures as well

Thanks, I checked out the instructions in the APC prop bag....I guess sometimes it pays to read the instructions. Ive been using APC props for 10 years and dont think Ive ever read those. So then I put my prop on the balancer and pilot off the molded in ring and the prop is nearly perfectly balanced out of the bag.
