I had figured that one on my Foffer DVI, in addition, I blew through the top side with a hair dryer. I had one bad stick but eventually got it loose and all is well! Overall, with the possible exception of the second coat of nitrate and first coat of butyrate, it is quite enjoyable working with Glenn's fabric. Any minor inconvieniences are well worth the effort. Thanks for the tip VG.

I found the fabric enjoyable as well and it is inspiring to know how good it will look when finished. Another thing is how durable it is. It would take a tremendous amount to puncture this stuff.
I am looking forward to seeing your DVa all covered.

Wings are done!! Yeaaaaaa! All I have left is the tail surfaces. Dummy engine is mostly painted. It is really sarting to look like a plane. I will not be able to youch it for about the next month due to travel but Dave S assures me he will enertain us with pictures of his in the mean time. His goal is to pass me while I am away.

Well Dave Johnson is going to busy for the next several weeks. He has challenged me to pass him up. I dont know about that but I am going to try to close the gap. My progress so far this week consists of finishing the little air pump widget that fits on the front of the cam, finishing the rocker boxes with resin, getting the dummy motor mount aligned and set, getting the strut hard points attached to the bottom of the top wing and finishing the top wing cap stripping. I also preped the bottom wing for cover by trimming the trailing edge so the fabric is less likely to stick. All that is done. Tonight I start prep on the GT lozenge fabric washing and ironing. The plan is to get the cover on the bottom wings this weekend. Here are a couple of pics of my cowl/dummy engine mount. These are the before pictures. The engine is too far back in these and I have moved it forward. Those pictures are still on the camera.

A bit more progress. I covered the bottom wings with the GT lozenge fabric. After washing and ironing as per the directions I ironed the fabric on using sig stix it on the surface of the wing. The light colored fabric went on the bottom and the darker on top. As with most of the tasks on this plane it was not as difficult as I expected. The real fun starts tomorrow when I start the doping process. I tried to get the fabric as tight as I could but there are a couple of puckers here and there. Most on the bottom. I hope they shrink out with the dope. There isnt much overlap at the trailing edge. I hope the fabric doesnt pull away there. I had to use a little tacky fabric glue to tack down some of the fabric at the trailing edge on one wing. I did a better job with the stix it on the other wing. Below are a couple of pictures of the finished wings. I will report on how the doping goes tomorrow.

Dave J challenged me to get the fuselage stained and the wings covered by the time he gets back. We will see. There is lots of prep to do on the top wing before I can cover it. I am making progress though.

Cheers,
Dave S.

Okay I have a question before I jump into the frying pan with both feet, and start building my own DVa where do you go to get the spinner for the plane or do you carve it out of wood?

On my DVII, I actually doped the perimeter with nitrate before trimming the fabric. It made trimming the fabric easy with a blade. The Dope does a very good job of shrinking the fabric but I did mine a little different. I used the tacky glue but I also wet the fabric as I applied it. Just like silkspan. The water shrinks the fabric some after it dries. Then the dope did the rest.
Your wings look very good. Can't wait to see it when it is done.

The spinner is available from Arizona Models but I think Proctor may have them as well. Last time I asked they were $85. at Arizona Models. You have to make the prop blade cut outs also in case you don't know that.

I got my spinner from Dave J, who got it from Airizona models. It is a nice spun aluminum spinner with brass backplate. You do have to drill the moutning holes and cut the prop notches yourself but that is not a terribly big deal.

I really like this airplane. Dave's design is fairly easy to build. At least it is easier than I expected. Turns out the jobs I thought would be difficult turned out to be easy and some of the ones I expected to be easy took a long time. The fuselage sheet is a case in point. It was really easy to get a good lookin result. The ailerons were the other extreme. It took me forever to get them to move free. They still bind a bit but I have one last trick to try to free them up. Overall I highly recommend this airplane. I am already planning on building another and fixing all the little mistakes I made with the first.

The Proctor won't fit my plane as it is to large as per my 5-view

Hey VG, thanks for the tips on the GT fabric. I used the DJ technique for putting this stuff on. Trimming the fabric was a chore. Even brand new single edge blades had a hard time of it. The edge came out a little rough. Thank god for rib tapes I guess. I was thinking of wetting the fabric to see if it would shrink like tissue does. I will try some of your suggestions on the top wing. Overall, the GT fabric has not been a bad experience. At this point I would do it again. DJ's wings are pretty much done and they came out awsome.

I am trying to get this beast done for the AMA nats in August. I am taking this week off to work on the plane. I have good momentum now so I should be able to make the nats.

Cheers,
DS

You can use a spray bottle and I definately would get dope on before trying to trim.
Good luck.
I am getting my DVII ready for a scale meet in July. This will be my first one. They do not have the Sportsman class so I will just enter expert.

VG nice D-VII. Good luck at the meet in July. My first meet will be the AMA nats this August. I put a couple of coats of nitrate on the wings today. Man they look bad. But DJ told me they would so I am not concerned. They are baggy and rough. Now if they stay that way after several coats of Butyrate then I will be concerned. They actuall looked better after the first coat than they did after the second. No pictures this time. The wings are just too ugly in this state. I am off to paint my machine guns. They are Williams brothers units. Nice detail on them but I did have to get out the squadron green putty for a couple of sink holes. A little gun metal spray and they should be just right.

Cheers,
Dave
