Dave! Thank god you are ok. You must be living a charmed life. The news from the quake area is pretty grim.

Now for lighter subjects. I got the tail skid fin thing built last night. I sort of built it on the fuselage. First I framed it up over the plan and then I transfered the frame to the fuselage. I then proceeded to sand and bend until it fit flush with the bottom of the fuselage. It is a good fit now. Tonight I sheet it and then back to the dummy engine parts. I have been putting off cutting holes for the machine guns. I am a bit afraid of that, you know, cutting holes in the nice sheeting and all. It will be fine once it is done though. Once the machine guns are mounted and I cut out the other little holes for switch access and such I think I can stain the fuse after a final prep sand and dent removal.

Status: offline 		OK, I have a picture of some progress. I got the tail skid fitted to the bottom of the fuselage. I have not glued it yet, that comes later. The process was similar to the fin. I still have to do the shaping of the skid. I think the fit is pretty good. It looks better in the picture than it actually is. It will do though.

Great flying
I loved it.

But "scale flying"?? I don't think so.

Albatros's weren't capable of 3D maneuvers and if I were a scale judge it would be ZERO on flying realism (maybe the smile face indicates you know this?)

Status: online 		That is SOOOOOOO cool! It's great to see someone really wring out one of these scale WWI models. You've got to admire the pilot's "Eier" to do these sorts of maneuvers with a 1/3 scale model. The hovering was a bit much but I can imagine that WWI pilots were willing to try just about anything, when the alternative was to get shot down in flames. I think that in general we're much too tame with our scale models.

Actually the most impressive (and at the same time most frightening) maneuver was the really "slow and low" turn just after take-off. I would have expected it to stall big time.

PS. Dave, glad you were out of the danger zone when the quake struck. I spent a week in Chengdu many years ago and so I can imagine what the travel conditions are like even at the best of times.

Status: online 		Also there's just something special about seeing that great model of a classic German aircraft flying over that German landscape (with its dull German sky) with German voices in the background. There's a certain kind of scale realism right there. I occasionally get the same feeling when I see a nicely done Sopwith rising from a British field.

Flying my EIII from a dry desolate dirt field located in inland California just wasn't right.

Status: offline 		Whew....thanks for that vid. That made my week, maybe even my month! Beautiful bird, great setting, and very good piloting. I'm with you Abu on the fact that we often baby our scale craft a smidge too much in the flying style department. Granted, I dont think the Dva had the power to weight ratio to hover for very much longer than a few seconds, and that after a zoom climb. But you'd be amazed at what antics an aircraft and pilot can perform when bullets are whizzing past. This vid also whet my appetite for getting my own DVa finished and in the air, I'm rigging it right now so it will be soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

I made a bit more progress on my DV. I did the rib stitching on the lower wings and applied the rib tapes. It looks ok. This is my first try at doing the stitching so next time it should come out better. I have to put on the trailing edge tape on each lower wing and then it is back to doping. There are still a couple of puckers and the wing is not smooth yet. I also got the dummy engine mount sorted out. I fitted the dummy cylinders to clear the engine and primed them, the rocker boxes, and the othre engine fiddly bits. My wife has the digital camera with her on a trip so no pictures to show. I will take a few when she returns. There are still a million things left to do on this plane. I will have to take a day or two off building to catch up with other neglected work around the house.

The bottom wings now have all the tapes on including leading and trailing edge tapes. The trailing edge was a bit of a chore due to the scallop. The tapes didnt want to lay down near the rib at the trailing edge. They took a little persuasion but I got them in place. One more trip around the tapes with the iron and it is back to dope and sand.

I also soldered up the extensions on the ailreon servos last night. Ah soldering,.. how I dont enjoy it. I had to redo a couple of joints because I got the wire too hot and it shrunk the heat shrink tubing before I got it in place. In the end it all worked out. I hooked up the servos to the receiver and tested them. I also added another plane to my transmitter. I now have an albatros in my list of airplanes on my DX-7. Having the plane in the transmitter makes it feel like it is getting close to being done. Still a lot of work left though.

The wife also returned from her trip to Seattle last night so I now have the camera. Long weekend comming up. Going to try to get some flying in and, hopefully, some building also.
