Status: offline 		hey all.. just picked up a revo 3.3 and am pretty excited about getting this thing running.


problem is its pretty darn cold outside, and im wondering if its a good or bad idea to try and breakin my new toy with it being sooo cold out?

says in the manual the how tos for a cold brekin, but... i dont have a temp gun and i really dont want to chance not breaking this in properly unless someone with some knowledge can give me a tip or 2!!!

The problem is, you may need a new Piston and Sleeve for the summer.

In this cold, it may not get hot enough and will not expand as much as it will in the summer.
Then when the summer comes around, the engine expands further and you have less compression. As if the engine is worn.

You have a long winter, you can drive it and enjoy it, then replace the P/S for the summer.
Then you can have a winter and summer, piston and sleeve sets.

Wrap the head in tin foil. That will help it retain heat better. Enjoy!

Status: offline 		If that 3.3 is anything like the 2.5 to get started in the cold, for the very first start I would start it in the warmth of the house. We had so much trouble getting 3 S-maxx to start for the first time in cold weather. I think it was in the 30s when we did ours 2 yrs ago. Good luck.

Status: offline 		-4F??? i wouldnt even chance that...i doubt its going to get warm enough...it needs to be in the 220 range for it to be broken in and since traxxas is a 6 tank break in proccess it would probably not even get warm enough in the first couple tanks....im sorry to say but i would wait. thats what im doing with my new RB 523. i bought a Losi Micro DT to run inside so i dont get too bored. at temps that cold it changes the fuel. it gets thicker and harder to run through the needles.

Status: offline 		There was someone on here that tested nitro fuels in a professional manner and concluded that it doesn't begin to gel until about -60°C(?).

The worst thing that can happen is you could need a new Piston and Sleeve for $66.
In the mean time you can have a lot of fun, or not....

Status: offline 		start the car inside. before taking it outside cover it in foil, and even a sock to keep it warm, the engine will be fine, the plastics will be very brittle though so don't crash lol.

yup i had that problem. i broke it in in like 10 degree weather and it lasted about 2 gallons for the rest of winter. and i couldnt drive at at during the summer because my engine was crap. and it crapped out when the weather was warm

Status: offline 		-20C....Well dont forget to keep that triger finger moving......I nearly turned mine to ice the other day in these temps. I later thought of using a large wool hat to keep my hands in while the antena poked through........Will try next time.

Status: offline 		If you going to risk it, go get a temp gun, and a beer koozie. Crank it up with the koozie over the head, this will help it to warm up and retain some heat inside the coozie.

Status: offline 		If it gets hard to steer you'll have to loosen up the balls at the end of the arms some. I had problems with mine when I had mine out in the snow.

Status: offline 		I think if youget a temp gun so youcan be sure you are keeping it up to temp you should be ok if you can retain enough heat. The aluminm foil will probably work as would the sock, or try a paper towel or tp paper roll( the card board tube, I know you are not three years old but I told some else to try it and they whined that they could not fit a whole roll in there, go figure) Just a though, Kinda spendy but maybe a winter engine and a summer engine? Just a thought.

i run the 1st tank yesturday (-5c) and she started up in 2-3 seconds. did the 1st tank breakin routine and man oh man, i can feel the power of this just waiting to be released.



i suppose ill just finish off the rest of the break in and drive the snot out of it for the time being and see what happenes come summer. if nothing else ill just upgrade the entire motor






wheres everyone finding thier blue suspension arms and why do alot of people have thier reverse servo taken out?

Status: offline 		I wouldn't break it in with air temps that cold. It's hard enough to operate a nitro engine in cold temps, let alone break one in. Wait until spring.
