Hi everyone, I recently found and purchased a GP US 1000 and need your advice. I would love to know what engine you would recommend as well as type of retracts. I've searched and found many threads on types of engines, only problem is many of the threads for this plane are back in 2004-2005. With the newer engines/technology on the market what would you recommend today? Also, any one dabble with retracts on this bird? Any advice? Would love to install them...

thanks so much!

Calvin,

Do yourself a favor and send the plane to me . Just Kidding.

Is your plane still in kit form? If it is, try to build it as light as you can because they tend to turn out on the heavy side. A friend of mine has a US1000 with an OS 160 2 stroke in it and that is all the motor it needs. Vertical pull is very good with the motor as well. If you are like me and you prefer 4 strokes, a Saito 180 would be my choice of engines. My friends plane doesn't have retracts, but I bet it would be awesome in the plane. I'm sure someone who has a US1000 with retracts can help you out with yours.

As soon as I finish fixing my brother's plane, I plan on starting to build my US60 that I will be putting retracts in. I know I'm not alone, but I wish Great Planes would have come back out with the US1000 kits when they did the US40 & US60. I would have ordered two kits myself..

Good luck with your plane and keep us posted.

I built one for a friend, and there was a Saito 150 in it. It had plenty of power for a sport flier, but I must say that I build very light. The 180 will weigh the same for even more power, so I am sure that will work very well. If you want retracts, be careful about the leg length ( prop diameter). The one I built was also with fixed gear, so cannot help you with that either.

Thanks David, yes the plane is still in kit form and it looks as new (so does the box) as the day it left the factory. I am leaning towards a 4 stroke just don't know what size to run with in trying to keep it light...anyone put a gasser on these things?

I'd be pleased to know what you guys have done to lighten your US1000? I am going to start mine also, still puzzled on engine choice. Either will I go with a YS 140 Sport, OS 200 or a 160FX. I will see how it goes at the end in order to avoid any unwanted extra weight.

Thanks,

JYM.

JYM,

From what I've seen while reading some posts on the US40 and US60, alot of weight was saved by cutting out areas in the sides and bottom of the fuselage behind the canopy. Ive also seen holes in the cockpit floor and back as well. If you can find it, Minnflyer did a build thread he titled "Ultrasport 40 Lite". It has alot of other good ideas that I am sure can be incorporated into your US1000. If you can find it, please let me know where it is so I can print it out and utilize some of his tricks on my US60. Another thing you can make is a built-up horizontal stab and vertical fin (if they are solid balsa like they are on the US60).

As far as engines go, I'd recommend building your plane and utilize whichever engine you have that would achieve a well ballanced airplane with the least amount of extra "dead" weight. Be mindfull that if you use a large 4 stroke, you make sure your landing gear is long enough for prop clearance.

Would you consider starting a build thread with your US1000? There are plenty of US40 and US60 threads, but not many US1000's. Good luck with building your kit.

Alright, well it's time to start building. I've done as much reading as I can stand and there's a lot out there. I have read that people are modifying the original build to reflect an "RCM" wingspan of around 74" or so. (eliminating the last set of ribs) with comments that it flies better. Any truth to that or anyone have any input? Also, I've read people putting flaps on (1/3 the aileron) and making the aileron and flap wider. If anyone has any experience with the US1000 and these modification please let me know! Thanks so much!

Calvin,

I personally haven't seen an Ultrasport 1000 with a gas engine in it, but I think they will be too heavy, even with the lighter gas engines available because you would still need things like an ignition battery, etc. but I may be wrong.

Anyone who has flown a US of any size will tell you that flaps are not required for the plane. That being said, I did add them to my brothers plane but he hasn't flown it yet. If you do decide to add flaps I'd suggest you have a transmitter that is capable of mixing flaparons as well as mixing the flaps with elevator so the plane doesn't pitch down when the flaps are deployed.

Personally, I don't like mechanical retracts, but ff you're still interested in using retracts, Spring Air makes excellent quality units, plus they have the advantage of automatically going down if air pressure is lost. I don't know their web address right off hand. but you can look them up. I've also been told that their customer service is outstanding and they are very helpfull with any questions you may have.

Have you given any more consideration regarding your engine? Given your three engine choices listed, If it was my plane, I'd put the YS 140 in it. It has more power than a Saito 150 at a very comparable weight. Also you have the advantage of being able to move your fuel tank allot closer to the airplane CG since the motor is pumped.

Also, you may want to consider asking a moderator to move this thread to the "Kit Building Forum". You might get a few additional responses to your questions.

With the cost of glow fuel going above $20/gallon, you might consider an appropriately sized gas engine. You would save a lot on fuel cost. The 150 to 180 size engines would probably be about the same cost as the gas engines.

OS 160. A very sweet and userfriendly powerplant. You might also consider the ST G23 at half the price.

I'm running a Super Tigre 3000 in mine. I find the Tigres in swap shops for $60.00 to $75.00. Plenty of performance for the dollar. Everyone is right about being heavy. No retracts on mine. I had to bend up some longer gear wires out of 7/32 wire to accommodate an 18 inch prop. Not totally unlimited vertical, but it does go up a long way before it falls out.

All of you have been great in helping me in my decision for powerplant. Im leaning on the YS 140 but has anyone added flaps (not flaperons) that may provide some insight? Again, I appreciate this forum and you all for your experience!!!!!!

Thanks!

i put flaps on a King Kobra (waiting for paint) for construction practice. a lot of research i read went either way as to whether they were necessary or effective. wht not i said and went for it. some posters swear by them. supposedly extremely low landings speeds are possible.
