RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 3:44:58 AM)

Ok guys.

Now that Kaelan said that swinging 550 blades would be more stable (which is what I thought), I'm thinking about nixing the H550 XES PRO SE for the standard plastic (long boom) kit. That is unless I order a spare long boom with the XES PRO kit and just use it instead of the short one.

For those that have built both, is this an easy way to go? Is there any other parts needed to go from short to long boom?

I really like the XES kit but would like to use 550 blades.

Like ea01bg, I will also be using the z20 motor.

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 4:29:58 AM)

longer boom, longer belt, longer tail linkage.. that's all you need.. about $15 in parts

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 5:23:07 AM)

Thanks Kaelan,

I don't see the belt listed on readyheli's website. Do you know who else has them?

They also have both a "Tail control rod #204195" and "straight tail pushrod #204669" for long boom.

Both had short tail versions so both of these needed?

Kaelan,

Also, I don't see the 20T OWB listed on readyheli.

Can you send a link?

I was trying to find out if it was included in the XES Pro SE kit but they haven't answered yet.

Also, what was shown in the link you posted ending in CHP-G012 I'm just curious.

I pulled the trigger...

ordered this from flying-hobby
http://flying-hobby.com/catalog/prod...oducts_id=2171 and had them change the motor to the Z20a980 (picked the fast shipping too)

plus I placed an order with Readyheli.. a couple pinions, 20T OWB, 50T gear, some Trex 600 landing gear.. and these http://www.readyheli.com/ProductDeta...tCode=CHP-G012

that was a quick 15 minutes to spend over $1000 but it'll be more than worth it hopefully I'll have everything within a week.

wonder why that link went dead... anyways, this link should work. http://www.readyheli.com/Custom_Heli_Parts_Spektrum_Carbon_Fiber_Servo_Do_p/chp-g012.htm it's the CF adapters for jr/spektrum servos to position the links in the right place without having to mess with drilling new holes :D later down the road I'll end up getting teh CNC pitch and roll arms as well as CNC elevator... just wasn't in the budget right now.

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 6:25:26 PM)

Thanks Kaelan.

The spec list is growing but I don't want to forget anything and then have to order again.

Now I just have to decide if I want 2500mAh packs or 3300mAh packs to run the z20A-980 motor swinging 550mm blades.

Dave D.

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 7:38:12 PM)

3300mah would be my choice simply because they will provide a longer flight time and they would also be able to be used if you decide that a more powerful motor and greater head speed is what you want. currently, I'll be using 2200mah 25C lipo's because that's what I have on hand. it's also the main reason I went with the Z20a-980 motor.. that motor is easy on the batteries and works well with the 2200mah lipos I already have. if I get more batteries (who am I kidding...I'll get more) I'll get 3300's.. in fact, been looking at the 3300 zippy's at hobbycity.com http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6354 as well as the 3500's http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6420

can't beat the hobby city prices :D

phunk -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 9:59:03 PM)

I'm tempted to put together my own pack with these:

http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-4000-Cell.htm

Could make a 4000mAh almost identical in size/weight to the zippy 3300. Would be expensive though.

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/15/2008 7:59:54 PM)

I'm using the 3300 packs from Hobby City. I'm only running them for 10-11 min but they are not even warm after. I need to get a charger that displays how much it puts back into the battery. I was also looking at the zippy 4000's they are not that much larger.

RC David ,
what gear combo are you going to run for the 550 blades?

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/16/2008 7:30:53 AM)

ea01bg,

That's a good question. I think several are running the 15t pinion but I think it depends on the other gears. I'm not even familiar with the gearing on this model so I'm sure I'll have questions for you guys when I get it ready to fly. On the pinion, I've read some posts that said the H550 kit came with a 14t and some a 15.

I want to have a 13, 14, 15 and 16 so I can get it geared just right for a lower headspeed on the z20A motor and my (2) 3s 2200mAh packs. I'll probably get all 4 when I order just in case.

I've noticed that my LHS has many different brands of 550mm blades in stock but NO 500mm blades so I guess it's good I'm going to go 550 to start.

Kaelan, I think I will probably get 3300mAh packs after I see how much flight time I get on 2200's with my gearing and motor choice.

Druss -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/16/2008 10:30:30 PM)

GOD... I just have to rant here... Just got a guy asking about the 550 I have listed in the ad section and he's trying to tell me that my 550 is only worth $360. The CC 60amp esc, Airtronics servos and GY401 alone are worth $420 new, nevermind the heli, motor and batteries.

xodarap1 -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/17/2008 2:40:23 AM)

I hear ya Druss.

I got a lot of offers when i was selling my DX7 on here that were just silly and I felt the same way you do. I did end up selling the DX7 for close to what i wanted for it, but still took quite a loss on it. It was tiresome hearing "it's not worth that!" and "I can find it other places for less" and " one of those just sold last week for $50 less!" comments though.

I guess the key is to wait longer because eventually it will sell for what you are asking for it (at least close to what it's worth) if you don't mind the constant pm's and silly offers that come in each day lol. Just take a deep breath and wade through the silly offers. We have to keep in mind that many of the people that bid on these things here don't know the helis or equiptment well and want a steal. When/If i ever part with my hurris, they won't go cheap cuz i know the shape they have been kept in and how much air time they have versus dirt time lol. I know you treat your helis and kits like gold too so hang in there man.

*BTW.. if you want to sell all the heli's electronics (including all batteries) for $2, just send me a PM lol. [:D] [:)] [sm=49_49.gif]

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/17/2008 2:41:24 AM)

Druss, tell that guy to go buy one for 360... because you're not selling yours for that cheap

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/17/2008 7:02:43 PM)

Hey Druss, long time-no see.

People like that are why I tend to steer clear of used stuff. That and the likelyhood of buying a heli that has been crashed a few times and repaired just enough to sell it to some unsuspecting new guy. With heli's being one of the most complex RC models, I don't think I'd ever buy one used.

I'm sure yours is in excellent shape but it's the chance you take with someone unknown.

On another note, I still have some guys telling me I should get a Thunder Tiger E550 Raptor as my 2nd heli because it requires less "tweaking" to get it to fly well.

The thing that's holding me back on a Raptor is the price of 5000mAh Li-Po's and the fact that the E550/620 use either 90 or 140 degree swashes and my DX7 does not do 140. From what I've read, 90 is not the best way to go.

hmmmmm.

I'm still leaning highly towards the Hurricane. What do you think?

Dave D.

AvoidingExpert -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/18/2008 12:36:32 AM)

Hey Druss!! What you flying these days ? I cant belive this forum is still alive WOW. I still Have one of my 3 Huricannes still love it had a static discharge crash about 2 weeks ago ( 2.4 + belt drive sucks bad) Back in the air l8r that day loveing the A123s really the way to go here. Well good luck all !!! AX

Druss -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/19/2008 4:42:43 AM)

Right now I'm mostly flying my trex 450se, hurricane 550, lepton ex and getting the trex 600N Pro ready for it's maiden flight.

David, I don't think there is much doubt that the raptor is a better built heli but it depends on your budget. I do like the fact that you use two 11.1v batteries in series for the hurricane as I use my trex batteries on my hurricane.

gpach -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/19/2008 5:08:29 AM)

First kinda hover on the 550.

Just finished up and rushed though the last bit to get it outside and do a quick 2 min hover as it was getting dark. Its a lot bigger than my 450 and somewhat intimidating at this point for me. Will get it out tomorrow morning if the wind is down and try and do some tweeking.

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/19/2008 6:34:26 AM)

That's cool Druss! That 600N will be cool.

The battery capability of the H550 is why I'm leaning that direction. The factors as I see them are:

Hurricane H550 XES PRO SE:

- Uses (2) 3s packs (I have 6 of these for my mini-Titan now)
- Is lighter and can therefore fly pretty good on 2500-3300mAh packs (I want 8-10 minutes basic flight w/z20A-980 motor)
- Comes with a complete metal head
- 120 degree eCCPM swash (my DX7 only has 90 or 120)

Thunder Tiger E550:

- Needs more expensive 5000mAh 6s packs
- Is heavier so can't really fly on 2500-3300mAh packs
- Comes with a plastic head
- 90 or 140 degree swash (I'd have to use 90 degree setup on the DX7 and I don't know how well 90 works)

I'm getting ready to take the plunge but I still can't decide 100% which way to go. I'm sure next spring the "boss" will allow another addition to the fleet but for now this will be it. The only other heli will be the mini-Titan that I already have.

I get close to 8 minutes of basic flight with a pair of kong power 2200's.

I'm running the z20a-980, 15t pinion, 50t front gear, 20t owb, 61t main gear.

that's the same setup I'm going to be running as soon as my hurri gets here.. although I might drop it down a bit to a 14T pinion, might even get another 30 seconds to a minute of flight time. Just wish Hong Kong post would hurry up. I have a set of freshly painted Trex 600 skids to put on it.. neon yellow :D

AvoidingExpert -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/19/2008 11:40:55 PM)

Neato Druss I love the 600n.It was kind of strange for me to get used two firing up a nitro bird. My last one was a caliber 30 witch is a great heli but I could really bog it down the 600n just keeps going, and I have just about given up on an avaunt. The Huricane though has been very good to me and I still think it is one of the best deal going out there for its price it kills. AX

BUt crash Vids are the best

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/20/2008 6:02:20 AM)

Thanks Phunk.

I think I'll refer back to that setup if I choose the H550 but might try the 14t pinion like kaelan.

I don't know but I assume the latest XES PRO SE heli comes with a 50t front hear and 61t main gear.

The main reason I'm still considering the E550 Raptor is that I've been told (by someone that has both) that it's much easier to set up and repair the Raptor due to a simpler mechanical design. The H550 does indeed look more complex but I'm thinking it's still the better way to go at this time.
