lookin good...maybe one of these days I'll add a larger heli to my fleet.. but for now, the 550 is plenty big.. if I do add a bigger one, I was looking at the century 620 or TT 620.. just to keep in line with my self imposed no Trex rule

I got in a bunch of flights over the last two weeks, booth the Hurricane and the Trex. Had a mishap with the Trex and bent the flybar up. I had just added wieghts to it to tame the cyclic down a bit. I put the spare Hurricane flybar on which is about 100 mm shorter than the one the Trex came with. It works great , it tamed the cyclic respone down a bit. I'm still getting use to the Trex so the Hurricane remains King of the Hanger I'm almost ready to try my first loop (with a Helli that is I've done hundreds with planks). Hopefuly the Hanger King wont come home in several bags .

Managed to keep the hurri in one piece after the flybar rotated in in the cage during flight:

I got my first flights of spring in yesterday and I though I would take a minute to update this thread with the Hurricanes status. The Hurricane is still the most flown Heli in my fleet. She’s no longer the Largest in my Fleet ( Trex 600 beat her out) or the prettiest (Trex 600 got a scratch and dent sale airbrushed canopy) but she sees the most air time. The stock motor and ESC where replaced but everything else is stock and continues to serve well. I am planning on doing my 1st loops and rolls this spring ( I’ve been practicing on sim all winter in preparation) and I’m sure I’ll be doing them on the Hurricane.

Thanks! well im putting the trex600 skids on it and the heli did not come with any servo arms/horns or any of the linkages(bought from a friend who never used it) so I have no book on it or any of the little things to finish it. i was reading here about raptor linkages? I want to take my time and build it up nice. if it takes 3 or 4 months thats fine. Ill be on a sim everyday till first flight. but i would like to order skids and linkage kit to get started. I have nothing for this heli so im starting from scratch. I have a HBK2 but its always to breezy for that here. So I got something a little bigger. Lol this thing is HUGE.

I just recently had a horrible mishap with my hurricane. The plastic canopy that came with the kit broke in flight. One of the grommets that holds it on actually broke and the canopy flew up into the flybar stopping the head. I've never seen anything like it. The head just stopped and both blades flew forward smacking each other. I only had 3 flights on those RCP CF blades. When they hit they both broke near the middle and they just flapped as the heli tumbled to the ground. Took out one of my FP2500mAh packs. Total cost to repair the damage was around $400 I think with the battery, blades, new FG canopy, and head parts.

Did get the heli put back together though and even replaced the crappy 800kv stock motor with a nice scorpion. What a great motor. Head speed is much higher, very little bogging for my stick banging flying style, flip and roll rate is sooo much better, and my flight times actually increased by about 2 minutes.

I did manage to get some video of my second flight after the rebuild. The FG canopy is a must. I would never trust that plastic canopy.

Thanks, It's so much better with the new motor.

I've got the Scorpion HK-3026 V2 1000KV Brushless Motor. I'm running the stock gearing with the same pinion I had on the stock 850kv motor. I don't remember off the top of my head what tooth count the stock motor had. I was going to go up to the 1210KV scorpion motor but I believe that one requires gearing change and beefier batteries than I had and I didn't want to spend another $200 on batteries.

Wow thats a lot of damage . I got rid of the stock canopy right off the bat, for astedic reassons. I dumped the stock motor as well going with the z20. I just do sport/ scale flying but wanted the better flight times. I think the next upgrade my Hurricane will see is a scale fusalage. I saw a thread where someone put a hurricane in the Century A109 fusalage without to many headaches.

The 550 i picked up has a stock? 1100kv motor and a stock 50a gaui speed control and a stock plastic heli kit with stock blades thats it! I trying to find out about the linkage kits for this heli. I have nothing for linkages and I read somewhere on here about raptor linkages working? and could some one help me with the motor/ecs combo and let me know what they would recommend for batteries? I dont have much experience it that department and there pretty $$$ so I hope to get it right the first time! thanks so much

I used raptor linkages on most of my heli. They are a much better choice since they are longer. More threads get threaded. Here's the list of upgrades I did on mine:

http://www.readyheli.com/204614_CNC_Elevator_Lever_Gaui_Hurricane_550_p/204614.htm
http://www.readyheli.com/204677_CNC_Swashplate_Guide_Gaui_Hurricane_550_p/204677.htm
http://www.readyheli.com/204679_CNC_Stablizer_Control_Set_Gaui_Hurricane_55_p/204679.htm
http://www.readyheli.com/Gaui_500mm_Blade_Tail_Boom_Conversion_Set_with_52_p/204662.htm

I didn't feel like doing the offsets so the cnc elevator one was a good upgrade for me. You can move the balls on the pitch and aileron ones to make them straight. I could then use the standard star servo horn. I did not like that all the pressure of the swashplate was being put on the plastic elevator arm so I got the swashplate guide. It does help in flight and was noticeable. I can't stand heli's that don't use flybar cages so I picked that up. And finally I decided to shorten the boom on mine since I am running 500mm blades. I don't see anyone selling the Gaui composite blades I'm using now and I don't know why. They are nice cheap blades.

I use the gaui 50 amp esc on mine. The soft start is actually quite nice.

The scorpion motor:
http://www.readyheli.com/Scorpion_Brushless_Motor_for_TREX_500_1000_KV_p/hk-3026-1000.htm

I'm using FlightPower Evo 25 2500mAh batteries on mine. On that stock motor or on any of the "upgrades" I'd really not recommend anything below the 2500mAh. A lot of people recommend 3000+ packs and I may eventually move to some of those. I've not used the Kong power packs but I know a lot of people really like them even though they are 2200mAh. I tried some Evo Lite 2100mAh packs on it and it does fly but lacks the oomph

http://www.readyheli.com/Kong_Power_3S_2200mAh_11_1V_25C_Lite_Pack_p/kp-2225-3lite.htm

If you go the 2 pack route then you'll need something like this to make the packs 22.2v
http://www.readyheli.com/Series_Deans_2_to_1_Adapter_p/gpmm3143.htm

and finally I've got for the BEC the Castle Creations CC-BEC: http://www.castlecreations.com/products/cc_bec.html

www.rotortech.ca

They have the gaui composite blades in stock as well as a lot of the 550 parts.

The 550 is a great machine with incredible punch. I ran mine on the Z20 motor for a year and just went to the Z30 motor. I run 550 mm blades and am just working on inverted hovering.

Wow, nice to see this Hurri 550 thread resurrected. I bought one of these last year at Thanksgiving and still haven't had time to put it together yet. There doesn't seem to be many Gaui 550 owners here on RCU since this seems to be the only thread on here about them and it was started a long time ago.
Hopefully I will get mine finished soon. I just need to get a gyro and tail servo for it to finish it. In the mean time I just been flying my little K2's and my Blackhawk 450.

I went from the BlackHqawk 450 to the Hurricane 550 ( the blackhawk 450 was my gateway drug ) your gonna love it. The differance in stability is incredable.
I'm still flying the Hurricane that I started the thread with. It still flys great and sees more airtime than anything in my hanger!

ea01bg,
I am glad to hear that you are still flying the 550. When I first bought mine I read through this entire thread and then wondered what happened to all the people that had posted in it. Never saw any more threads about the Hurricane 550 after that. A lot of companies seem to be coming out with new models in the 500 size so maybe the Gaui has lost its appeal after being out for a couple of years now.
I hope you continue to enjoy flying yours, and hopefully I will get to fly mine soon. After flying those K2's and the 450 this thing looks pretty intimidating. Might have to wear a diaper the first time I spool it up.

It's good to see that there are actually people still flying the 550. I'm at the opposite end of everyone else. I was going to upgrade my Hurricane to full "bling" and after figuriing the cost, went out and bought a Rex 600 ESP. Ended up stripping out the receiver, gyro and rudder servo to make the new bird fly. Now my Hurricane sits on top of my bookshelf with the Blade CP. Jerrymac, good luck on yours. I went from the CP to the 450 then the 550. I almost soiled myself when I heard it spool up for the first time. When I went to the 600, I did the same exact thing.
BTW, has anyone else noticed that a lot of the distributors are no longer carrying parts for the 550? Two of the places I used to go to no longer carry any Gaui products.

LOL I remeber the feeling myself As far as the parts go I havent needed to replace anything in so long I hadnt notied. I'd better grab a crash kit just in case
Not to mention that if I want to put this in the Century a109 I'll need to strech it back out with the long boom kit, I bought mine short. thanks for the heads up

Yeah, I haven't had to replace anything for a while as well. Then I decided to try an auto rotation just for the fun of it and landed a little crooked. Now my feathering shaft just has a slight bend in it. Thinking of either selling it or putting a Huey fuse on it and painting it in Cal Fire colors.

Well my hurricane has seen its last hover. The hurricane didnt see as much flight time this year as it did last year, as my skills improved the Trex 600 became my helis of choice. I still pulled the hurrcane out now and again. It saw service when I did my first flips and rolls, the repair parts where cheaper than the Trex. About 3 weeks ago I started working on inverted hovering and the Hurricane took a hard hit. Lower frames , front gear, skids, and boom need to be replaced. No one had the front drive gear in stock so it just sat on a shelf. I needed a gyro and reciever for a Trex powered Hues 500E I'm working on and it got stripped from the hurricane. I just pulled the servos for another project. I think thats going to be it for the Hurricane, I dont see myself doing 30 size birds in the future. 450's 600 and hopfuly next summer a 90
