The motor stoped again today. Luckly I was about to land when it happened. The batteries still had plenty of power. All the connections where tight and I dont think there could have been any shadowing on the antenats,I'm thinking ESC failing intermintintly at this point. I pulled the trigger on ordering an alien esc and a z20 motor. until then I'm grounded

Thanks Kaelan.

I had a feeling that special combo might be available somewhere.

My problem now is that I've read some horror stories about a major tail problem that is causing crashes. I think the guys are swapping in a T-Rex 600 tail. I don't really want to buy a new heli that NEEDS this (or any) upgrade just to fly without a part failure so I think I'll watch this issue for a while.

Not that I was going to buy the H550 next week but I was thinking maybe early summer.

What is the OWB?

I found out that the Thunder Tiger E550 REQUIRES a 6s 4000 Mah+ Li-Po so at the moment this H550 is the only heli that I'm interested in. Mainly because I don't want to have to spend $1,000.00 on 3 6s Li-Po's and $200.00 on a 5-6 cell balancing charger.

OWB = One Way Bearing

as far as the tail issues. I do know that if you start getting the head speed above 2200 rpm the way the bearings are supported it will kick/lock briefly. the new GAUI CNC tail doesn't have that problem so far reports have been great on the GAUI CNC tail. You can also get the GAUI thrusted bearing tail, it seems to work a bit better than stock but can still have the kick issue or, spend a few buck and get the Trex 600 tail hub and grips. you don't need the entire tail from the trex 600.

the only tails I've seen that have had issues and caused crashes are the HDX 550 CNC tail. that one has blown apart in flight on a few people. so just stay away from that one.

I'll be ordering my Hurri in about 4 weeks and also plan on a few upgrades. CNC elevator, CNC pitch/roll arms, 20T OWB and Trex 600 landing gear (wider is better). I'll also swap the motor from the stock GAUI to the z20a-980 (easier on batteries and longer flight times)

yeah... sounds like the ESC is over heating. who did you order the ESC and z20 from? if it was readyheli they'll have it to you in a couple days..

RC David ,
I have the CF version with about 10 flights on it now . No 3d hover and just starting forward flights (2 os far) . I have not had any problems with the tail. I'm using a Futaba 401 gyro and its solid as a rock. I have a had a problem with the motor cutting out , I think its a bad esc but I havent hear of alot of these problems.

Thanks Kaelan.

I don't plan on hot-rodding my H550 so if 2200RPM is on the high side, I'd say I'll never have it that high. As far as the Gaui CNC tail, I thought I'd read about a problem with it too but maybe I'm mistaken. I'll have to verify.

I guess if/when I get it I better just get the version that comes with the CNC tail. I'm not sure what the difference is between the "Gaui CNC tail" and the "Gaui thrusted bearing tail"?

I'd think the CNC tail would already be as "beefed up/upgraded" as possible. From what you said though, I'd just go CNC.

It seems the z20-980 motor is the most popular one for the H550. If it's the COOLEST running motor available then I'll add that to the list.

I'm assuming I can get 8-10 minutes of flight with that motor, 500mm blades and my 2200mAh Li-Po's???

T-Rex landing gear sounds like the other must-have.

I'll keep checking the lists for up-to-date reports/tips etc.

ea01bg,

Glad your CF version is flying well. I can't decide which version to get (was going to get CF frame/plastic head & tail) but it looks like it might be better to get the plastic frame so I get the Gaui CNC head and tail since there are some problems with the stock plastic tail.

Or, maybe in the next couple months A USA dealer will offer the CF frame with CNC head/tail.

I'm using a GY401 on my mini-Titan and love it. I'll most likely get one for the H550 too.

Not sure which ESC you are using that's causing problems but I'm thinking about using the Castle Creations Phoenix 60 or 80.

I bought my mini-Titan in January and it's flown AWESOME without ANY upgrades. I just want to buy a H550 kit the same way (no upgrades needed) but I know I'll at least need some good blades and when the stock landing gear breaks, the T-Rex gear.

8-10 min flights... not on 2200mah batteries. for something close to that in flight time (hovering and very basic FF) you'd need 3300mah batteries.

I'm getting 10 min with zippy (I think they are remarked Hextronic) 3300 mah on the stock motor. They are an off brand but for 45 each you cant go wrong. I used Hexronic 2200's in my Black Hawk 450 all last season.

exactly what is needed for 10 minute flights.. I'm going to be ordering some of the zippy's for my 550 i a few weeks. Until then I'll use the 2200's that are coming with the heli and the 2200 hextronic pack I have now.. I don't' expect more than 5-7 minutes on those.. but that'll be plenty.. hopefully the 550 will handle a LOT better with wind than my BH450

As someone who has booth I have no doubt it will. Dont skimp on the gyro for the 550 I was amazed at how well the 401 holds the tail BTW dont push the 2200's past 5 min.

Kaelan,

If I'm really only going to get 5 minute flights with my 2200 Li-Po's then I might have to re-think this purchase. The whole reason I was considering it was the fact that I could use (and get decent flight times) with my 2200 mAh Revolectrix packs. I also didn't want to have to buy packs that can only be used in 1 heli. Right now 3S 3300's CellPro's are $110.00 each so that's 440.00 for 2 flights worth of packs. I don't think my Thunder Tiger mini-Titan will fly with those 3300's either.

I know there are cheaper batteries but I really didn't want lots of lower quality packs but rather just 3 flights worth of high quality packs for the H550.

ea01bg,

I'll be curious how many charge cycles you get from those zippy 3300's. Where did you get them and what did they charge for shipping to the USA?

the zippy batteries are decent.. and for teh price, you really can't go wrong.. hobbycity has a few different ones.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6354
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6597 (these are new.. Zippy-K packs)
they also have the Zippy-R packs.. but not in the 3300mah size.. the -R packs are Korean made and cost a bit more.. but still a LOT less than everyone else.

even if you could get 10 mins out of the 2200 packs. you wouldn't want to use the same packs for both heli's... use a separate pair on the 550 so you keep the cycles the same

This is the 1st seasson on the zippys, if they are the same as the Hextronics I've gotten a seasson and a half out of the four 2200 I bought. and at the time they where less than half the price of the name brands. I think the zippys are going for around $45 right now. I dont remeber what the shipping cost was.
