jeffk464 ,
Yes, but I think I know what may have happened. When I removed the GUI ESC I may have pushed the bind button.

jeffk464 -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/1/2008 4:40:48 PM)

Futaba had a major issue with the early release 2.4ghz radio, you need to check it out and make sure you don't have one of the effected systems. I had the same problem and it cost me a plane.

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/1/2008 6:37:12 PM)

ea01bg,

That's exactly why I will NEVER buy a single receiver module for this type of 2.4Ghz system. I have the AR7000 in my mini-Titan (with receivers positioned correctly) and will use the same in my H550.

I still don't trust it (chance of unlink-reboot) 100% in a CF frame even with 2 receivers (I'm just paranoid).

It's interesting that Futaba has had their own problems with 2.4Ghz. I am an old-school Futaba user from way back in the 80's but when I jumped back in the hobby with heli's (after 15 years off) everything has advanced and 2.4Ghz seemed the way to go.

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/1/2008 11:47:11 PM)

RC David
I dont understand your comment, you wont use a 2.4 ghz with a cf frame because you might hit the reset . Thats what i did. as far as using one with cf thats your choice but plenty of people are myshelf included for 2 yrs now with no ill affect. As long as you follow the guildline in the placement of the equipment its fine.

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/1/2008 11:50:13 PM)

jeffk464 ,
I'm not in the affected serial number range[:D] Dodged a having to send it back to the factory!
The more I think about it the more I think I reset it.

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/2/2008 3:50:57 AM)

ea01bg,

Sorry if I confused you. The two main issues are:

#1 There is a "chance" that a CF frame (metal content) can block the 2.4 Ghz signal from a receiver antenna and cause a problem. Not a high probability but a "chance" that if you are using a single module receiver like the AR6100 and it's on one side of the heli and you fly too far out with the receiver/antenna on the FAR side of the heli NOT FACING YOU, it can loose the signal. If you have an AR7000 that has (2) receive modules and position it properly (3+ inches apart with each modules antenna legs pointing in opposite directions) then you have a MUCH better chance of NOT losing the signal (unless you fly BEHIND a large metal object like a bus or water tower).

I DO NOT want to experience this with a heli (especially a 450 or 550) so I will ONLY use the AR7000 receiver in my helis and in doing so I don't think I'll have a problem. I'm still not sure I want a CF frame H550 but mainly because of the cost of replacement.

#2 The "reboot" issue seems to affect some people but not others. Basically you NEVER want the Spectrum receiver to reboot in mid flight. The older receiver firmware requires 3-10 seconds to re-boot and that likely means "SPLAT" for your heli. This is caused by the BEC voltage dropping too low. It has not been a problem for me on the mini-Titan yet but I did experience it with my Blade CX-2 last fall.

The newest receivers have been updated to re-boot in about 2 seconds. I think Spektrum is updating older DSM-2 receivers if you send them in. I have not done so yet.

I hope I made that more clear.

I'm new to helis but not RC. I raced cars/trucks and had a boat back in the early 80's. Now that I'm back in the hobby, I'm hooked on 2.4Ghz and will never go back to 27, and 72 Mhz radios.

Now, I did just read a post that said you could NOT fit a 6S battery in the plastic frame H550. Can someone confirm this and explain further? If it's true then I guess that's the deal-breaker. I'll HAVE TO buy the CF frame because I want to be able to use 6S packs in the future.

Also, I flew my E325 mini-Titan outside for the first time today. It was a handfull in 10-12MPH wind so I'M DEFINITELY buying the Hurricane now -)

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/2/2008 5:19:17 PM)

A smaller Heli in a 10 mph wind is a handful. Thats was a big factor in my getting the 550 as well.

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/4/2008 9:53:59 PM)

I got a chance to fly with the new z20 motor Four sets of packs on my Hurricane 550. first two packs: Fast forward flight Flying from my back yard moving under the power lines across the road and into the farmer next doors field. a long lazy turn then over the powr lines back to my yard a tight 90 deg right over my house and stopping in a hover where I started a piro there and then did the whole ting again.

third pack: Figure eights in my back yard and then a quick hope across the road in faast forward and a snap turn 180 and back to my back yard.
fourth pack: Took off from the road and spent the pack cranking and banking in Fast Forward in the field.

I'm much more comfortable with the Heli now. while I had the down time waiting on thwe motor and esc i took my old falcon 3d out and cranked and banked the heck outa it (see post what happens when you dont care if you crash).

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/4/2008 11:45:11 PM)

what pinion, front gear and OWB are you running with the z20.. and most importantly, how did you like it? what kind of flight times?

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/5/2008 12:35:01 AM)

Im using the stock gears and a pair of zippy 3300 batteries I havent gone over 10 min on the flight times, but the packs and motor are barely warm. I'm using a poly 4 charger so I dont know exactly how much I have left in the battey after flight but they charge in about 45 min. I like the z20 much cooler running moter.

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/9/2008 11:40:17 PM)

My Hurrican 550s First crash[:o] I got a little confused when coming nose in in FF and messed up. I almost recovered but almost dosent count. The good news is the parts for this bird are cheap[:D]
1 Fin & Stablizer Set 7.90
1 Tail Boom 4.95
1 Front Main Gear 3.90
1 CNC Aluminum Tail Boom Supports -SILVER 11.99
+ 4.50 shipping

less than 35 bucks
at those prices I went ahead and put together a crash kit so i wont have to wait for shipping next time[:)]
Back to real flight for a week[X(]

gpach -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/10/2008 12:04:42 AM)

Just got the 550.

All I can say is MAN IS THAT BIG!

Comparing it to the 450 and smaller machines its a monster. Hard to say how much spring yard work will get done this weekend.

Have almost all the parts to put it together!

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/10/2008 12:21:34 AM)

I hear that , I cut the grass when it starts to interfear with the main blade LOL

gpach -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/10/2008 1:03:43 AM)

Where I live, there isnt enough room in the back yard for it. I can hover around a 450 but that about the limit. If I popped the 550 up out there the neighboors would have a cardiac!

Will have to take it to the park.

I cant wait to take it on Holidays, my brother lives on 5 acres and there is tons of room to get into trouble without bothering anyone. I just need to get it built and get my skills up a bit.

xodarap1 -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/12/2008 3:24:50 AM)

Just to a couple inverted dips to the grass each day and then you won't have to mow the lawn with the mower [sm=angel_smile.gif]

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/12/2008 5:54:31 PM)

If my 550's inverted that means I'm only a few seconds away from ordering parts! LOL

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/13/2008 6:23:33 AM)

Ok Steve (xodarap1), kaelan and the rest...

After mulling it over, I'm 99% sure I'm going to order the H550 XES Pro. I just can't seem to swallow $350.00 packs for a Thunder Tiger E550 Raptor.

I assume I won't need metal mixing arms for the XES Pro since the whole head should be metal.

A few last minute questions. I looked at the JR DS-821's but I'm still wondering what the next step up is (one with metal gears)? I have DS285MG's on cyclic in my mini-Titan and I love them. I'd like to get the exact same spec, but larger version servos.

If there is a Futaba that fills this requirement then I'll just trim the plugs.

Also, How do I know if my H550 XES Pro model has the new 50T OWB?

For ESC, I think I'm going to go with the Castle Creations Phoenix 60. Is the 10A Castle BEC still recommended for my application?

Once I get this figured out I plan to place the order(s).

I really appreciate the help everyone.

Dave D.

xodarap1 -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/13/2008 9:04:39 AM)

Dave,
I'm still running the same JR DS-821's on both hurricanes and they continue to perform well as hard as I can push them. I've only had one spectacular inverted crash in S2 mode so far (the only damage was= main shaft, flybar, FS were all bent,.. main drive gear, RCP main blades and one tail blade destroyed), but all the 821's survived and still fly fine 50 flights later! Sorry, I can't compare them to any other servos on the H550's to say what would be overkill or not. After the flights I've put on them and after that destructive crash, when these fail, I'll just put some more JR DS-821's on again because I know they work great for my style of flying and have shown me they can take a beating. The servos on my H550 helis haven't been a performance limiting factor so far.. more like my lack of skill to max them out or wear them out lol.. but i'm workin' on that ;)

My XES kit came with metal mixer arms. Your best bet and the simple way to do it would be to just contact the place you want to purchase your heli from and ask them if it comes with them and a 20T owb.

The 10A Castle works great with my Z30 powered heli setup. I can't comment on the Castle Creations Phoenix 60 paired with it since I'm running it with the Align 75A ESC.

*The Rex 600 landing gear, Gaui lightweight paddles and tail blades are nice, cheap upgrades and work well. ;)

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/13/2008 3:52:48 PM)

I pulled the trigger...

ordered this from flying-hobby
http://flying-hobby.com/catalog/prod...oducts_id=2171 and had them change the motor to the Z20a980 (picked the fast shipping too)

plus I placed an order with Readyheli.. a couple pinions, 20T OWB, 50T gear, some Trex 600 landing gear.. and these http://www.readyheli.com/ProductDeta...tCode=CHP-G012

that was a quick 15 minutes to spend over $1000 but it'll be more than worth it hopefully I'll have everything within a week.

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/13/2008 6:32:25 PM)

Thanks Steve.

Unless my 1% uncertainty turns into "hey, I ordered an E620 Raptor" I will be jumping on an H550 XES PRO SE. I still have some guys telling me the E620 is the "better" heli to get and CellPro is having a 10% off sale on batteries.

My other issue with the E550/620 is the swash has to be set up 90 or 140 degrees. My DX7 does not do 140 and I don't know how well 90 works. Especially with only 3 servos (how the reviewer in RC Helicopter set a 620 up)

For the H550, I sent the dealer the question about metal mixing arms and the 20T OWB. We'll see what they say. If it does not have the 20T OWB do I need to get one right away or can I fly without it for now?

The finalized build is:

- H550 XES PRO SE
- Tonic-X Z20A 980kv w/fan
- Castle Phoenix 60 ESC
- Castle 10A BEC
- Futaba GY-401 gyro
- Futaba 9257 tail servo
- (3) JR DS821's for cyclic (thanks for the help here)

Did I miss anything?

RC David -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/13/2008 6:48:45 PM)

Ok, one more BIG question...

I noticed that the H550 XES PRO SE comes with the short boom.

Isn't the long boom better for beginners (better stability)?

Would I be better off with the long boom?

Thanks!

Dave

ps, what pinions come with the heli kit? I will order the other sizes at the same time.

the shorter boom is only a couple inches shorter than the long boom (maybe 2 inches) not that big of a deal unless you plan on swinging 550mm blades. as far as the pinion.. I asked the same question at HeliFreak.. got different answers.. some got the 14T.. some got the 15T.. some got none. also some got a 50T first grear.. some got the 42T first.. I ordered the 14T and 15T and a 50T first gear just to make sure I was covered. gear can wear out with use so having the extras is a good thing. with the 50T and a 14T pinion with the Z20a-980 motor I should be getting a Head Speed around 1890 rpm.. which is plenty for me.. or switching to the 15T/50T combo would give me around 2000rpm.. switching to a 42T first and 14T pinion should give around 2200 rpm and a 15T/42T combo around 2400 rpm..

those should give me PLENTY of room to grow as my skills grow. that's one thing I love about the Hurricane... a simple gear change can give you a whole new heli

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 2:40:33 AM)

I ordred the wrong boom [:@] I'm out of action for another 3 days. I replaced the front main, is there an easy way to tell if it got its set screws in the divits in the shaft? It seamed hard to tell if it was right and I dont want it turning loose in mid air. Should I use blue locktight on the front main to shaft?

ea01bg -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 2:43:06 AM)

Kaelan , I have an extra long boom now so it begs the question(s)
1 can the z20 swing 550 blades?
2 if so whats the affect on flight performance. I'm only doing sport flying so I'd chose long flight and stable over adical performance.

Kaelan -> RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover (5/14/2008 3:01:23 AM)

yes it can swing the 550's.. and it'll be a bit more stable.. plus if you want to do auto's the blades will hold more inertia
