Im running an 55 ax and it is plenty of fun. Hard to slow down with this motor to land it. I wouldnt go any bigger.

Errrr.... Hi all. Am i only one here who's planning to build Sundowner on Evolution .46 2-stroke. I'm going to build my first glow engine plane and i love the look of Sundowner 50.
Last i week bought .46 engine from LHS and after reading this big thread, i have feeling that my engine is too small for SD. I'm not seeking a record breaker, but it would be nice if it has power to stay in the air.

Mkk8,

I hope this is not your first plane. Please tell us that you've been flying electrics for some time and have the skill necessary to fly and LAND this type of aircraft. I mention electrics because you say this is your first GLOW aircraft. Its far from a trainer.
Otherwise, I would say go bigger on the engine. Of course its my own opinion, but part of the fun factor with this plane is the speed. The O.S. .91 really cooks in this plane. But whatever you decide to do...have fun with it.

As was noted, if you are transitioning from a trainer, this plane may not be for you. You will want to have a bit of time with heavier sport models or scale-like powered aircraft of some sort. Its not a 3d plane either... so if you have been flying electric foamies or similar, its going to be a difficult transition.

Plus, you will in the process have to learn how to properly set up and operate the engine. A cowled-in setup like this is generally not the best place to learn engine operation.

But not knowing your experience..... I only urge that level of caution. Beyond that.......

Build it per the plans, use the Evo engine ..... and just enjoy it. Whether it is doing 90 mph or 110 mph on the top end, it will be the same thrill and an enjoyable airplane. The plane flys just fine using a .46 - .50 size engine.

There is no "need" to overpower the aircraft, that is just the desire of a few to push it a little bit further on speed beyond the average.

My experience with the plane is it flys a bit better with the smaller engines and resulting lighter "ready for flight" weight.

Folks tell me the electric power option for the Sundowner is actually a nice combination.

I agree completely with you. Like I said I have the ax55 in the plane and Ive been flying for years and it is a handful to slow this aircraft down on a small field. The 46 evo will be great for the airplane and it will be plenty of fun. But like you said, definetly not a good first bird. Lighter engine = easier landing. Have fun with it.

Morganew,

No, this is not going to be my first plane. i've been flying only electrics and this could be my first plane that makes smoke on purpose. I have Extra 300 and Cap 232 that flys 83 mph and has a nasty habit to tip stall. 400W on both aerobats and both has 1m wingspan. I like to fly aerobatics/fast cruising but not 3D. I also like that plane has somekind of scale look. Shockflyers with fat wing are not for me.

... smoke on purpose ... ! I had to grin at that one ! nice...

You should be ok. The 1m 400 size birds should give you enough flying experience.... just take your time and learn the new plane.

The wing loading with this is heavier, despite it wanting to float a bit for landing. But in general it is a very smooth flying aircraft.

Here's me flying my Cap 232 on weaker setup. 83 mph was measured on bigger prop. I've decided to get sundowner soon as my summer vacation (building vacation) begins. Wish my luck

bob, i know your not into the oversizing bit, but that 90lx might look good on the front of this plane. have the 75ax on one and it is a very nice combo. to much farting around installing the 60lx. was thinking about this or the revolver. the sundowner is built much better.

I used the Jett 90lx on the sd50...it really moved, 128 mph....but with alot of cowl modification . I felt like there was maybe too much drag with the external exhaust and that i could do better.....so i went to the 60lx with the in cowl exhaust like Dub did... but i'm running into issues....BOB did you guys have any problems with cooling in this set up. after flying 2/3 of a tank (using your bubbless tank) the engine just quits.......twice at altitude. plug is still good. tank bladder is intact. i wonder if there is not enough air over the engine???? any ideas???

if i go the 90lx route, i will use the turbo muffler i just bought. that should help w/ the cowel. ptoe. you may want to go to the jett engines forum or talk to dub himself w/ your engine issues. hope it goes well. that should be a wicked setup.

I used the O.S .91FX on my sundowner, similar to Pat and a few others here. I recently attempted to switch from the Bisson Pitts muffler to the Jett Stream 90 muffler. Has anyone successfully made this modification. The exhaust for my .91FX is a little too far left (when looking head on at plane) to get the muffler lined up correctly with exhuast exiting the fuse as it would with the Jett 60 engine, etc. Can someone post pics of they were able to do this succefully. It seems almost impossible to seat and bolt the jett stream muffler.

Thanks

It was mentioned earlier but how about the OS 91 4c. I have one from my minnow that needs a home. Also what kind of mount comes with the plane? Would the GP adj mount work wih the pre-installed engine mount holes?
