incarus -> how do I balance a 10 cell or 12 cell pack (12/10/2007 3:01:34 AM)

I have a 6 cell hyperion balancing charger......I also have a 12 cell NON balancing charger from hyperion.

I want to build a 10 cell or 12 cell A123 pack.

I know I can build 2 five cell packs or 2 six cell packs but are there any practical ways to build and balance a 10/12 cell pack since I have a 12 cell A123 cell charger

Balance connector is never single piece for so many cells. Just wire pack balance connectors as two 6s, and balance charge those two parts of a pack one by one. All cells fully charged = balanced pack.
All what You may need as a special, is a power wire to connect to charger, in the middle of the pack...
Well, it seems to me much better to split the pack and have really two separate parts. 12s charger is probably more than 2-times slower (as its power is limited) than 6s charger.
Are we talking about 0610i (250watts) and 1210i (180watts)?

yes the 1210i is 180 watts max charge
and the 0610i has max charge of 250 watt

your probably right I will just buld 2 six cell packs and balance them individually.

thanks

now, there are balance chargers can charge one 10S or 12S lipo battery, but the battery must mount one 11pin balance connector for 10S battery. in fact, the present 10S battery mounted 2*6pin balance connectors. so when you charge 2*6S battery, you must connect them in series, not only power leads connected in series, but also the balance wire (through balance connector) must be connected in series. this is comprehensive, but it is essential, unless the charging current is under 3A.
Use the below CONVERSION ADAPTER, The 2*5s packs, or 3*3s, 3*2S battery packs can be connected in series through balance connector. and you need connect in series the discharge power leads of two battery if you want to charge two battery at over 3A.

Two Hyperion LBA10 balancers can be connected together to balance up to 12S as a single pack...

I wire mine up with TP balancer tabs, then use my 210 balancer on my 1010c to charge, no issues.

I use a Robbe 12s balancer that does a great job, but balancing current is limited to 70mA like most balancers.
Fortunately, the Robbe charger (Infinity3) goes to "low current" when the balancer meets that limit.
As a consequence, with unbalanced cells, the charging time of a 12s2p pack may go up to 3 hours !
When charging with my MasTech 5020, I charge it in 12 min at 20A; but without balancing.
There is no balancer on the market that is capable of high current.
Unfortunately !

Not exactly accurate as AF Blinky bleeds 120 mA, Hyperion LBA10 bleeds over 200 mA , Thunder Power 205V and 210V Bleed over 400 mA and FMA CellPro 10 and Balance Pro HD balance with 1 A current.

Good news!
Which one do you recommand for 12s a123?
Thanks

2-6s Balancer B6 and B6+ made by CHARGERY has over 300mA of balancing current, and the HB6 is for over 2Ah lipo battery with 1A current. the balance current mainly depends on the resistor, generally 300-500mA is enough.

As A123s should not need balancing every charge it really does not atter all that much. Hyp.LBA10 does up to 6S so you could balance 6S one charge and the other 6 next charge.

You can network two and do all 12 each time. You could use 3 AF blinkies and do all 12 each time but they are still very slow.

As I have posted many times. If you want to learn about A123 cells go to RC groups ,batteries and chargers . I refer to RCU as the dead zone.

When is the last time Brian answered a post here? He is A123 Customer Support is he not?

Thank you, I will stay with my protocol:
- fast charging at the field without balancing (48V or MasTech HY5020E),
- low speed charging at home with balancing (Robbe Infinity and 12s balancer),
- control of cell voltage during flight (dual MM7).
