Last fall I had a fuel filler line leak into the tank compartment of a model with the resulting fuel overflow into the fuselage. I very foolishly used the tank padding sponges to dry out the spilled fuel with my bare hands.

I have since come down with a very bad case of eczema which is not responding to the medications prescribed by my doctor.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience and their cure if any. I have had skin contact with glow fuel in small amounts many times during the past 50 years but never a serious reaction.

Methanol and most alcohols will enter through skin and accumulate and is classed as a cumulative toxic product
So will gasoline and most petroleums and oil based products and some are more toxic than others

Nitro methane is made from propane and has some toxic qualities similar to methanol but thats not so bad as the fumes the nitro makes in confined spaces which are like a nitric acid and makes indoor use of nitro fuels a big big baddy issue so the local drag race cars are also a problem if your too close to them like inside giant arenas

Any one or all these products can cause skin rash conditions and other problems

So can city pollution from the gasoline exhaust fumes of cars especially in traffic jams

So can epoxy glue and most petroleum based glues

It can also be that skin conditions can be activated from non modeling sources like car air-con systems where pollution levels from car air-cons can raise pollution inside car to 5 times greater than outside the car

And also house or office paint fumes from recent new painting

Most skin rashes obtained from some one source of sensitivity will ease back in time and may never reappear in some cases or reappear from a different trigger like house paints or thinners like turpentine
Car mechanic's handling large amounts of gasoline and diesel are often affected from skin rash conditions along with painters who use lots of paints and thinners and paint houses and offices etc

Model plane users are very very rarely affected due to small amounts of exposure

Best to go to online medical sites to get details but once affected it more likely to leave a permanent sensitivity to the chemical or similar chemicals that triggers the event

hell it might even be some new species of flower type that arrived at your local flying field and spores got onto plane and have nothing to do with fuel

Allergic reactions are complex so things like recent bought new car or recent change of office or type of work or new diet or new medicine can all be the reasons for these events and only doctors can do sensitivity checks to see what is the likely culprit

Or like me you can mostly do electric and reduce exposure to the methanol fuel and get exposure to nickel candiums and lead acid batteries etc

Its a chemical bath world we live in and even without chemicals there exist plants that cuse issues

One very small region of South Africa has a plant and if you allergic to it within hours of arival in the region you start to get sick and if you don't high tail it out within 24 hours your dead

balsaeater sumed it up very well. One thing to add is your doctor can send you to a specialist on allergies and there are very sophisticated tests they can run to determine all of the things you are allergic to. There are shots you can take after you have this information to take care of the reactions your body is having to the allergens. Good luck, I hate to hear of anyone suffering form their hobby.
