Hello Carden builders

I was looking on the plan (35% 260) and i am not sure if i am going to use the way it's shown on the plan for the ailerons/elevator horns. The plan shows hardwood blocks glued on only one side of the control surfaces. I doubt i could use this kind of horns, if i do not have hardwood blocks each sides of the control surface?

I would apreciate photos of your installation before covering
Thanks
Daniel

All you need to do is notch the foam and balsa to accept the blocks. I used Gorilla Glue to keep mine in and have no issues. I drill and tap the holes for the horn post and put a dab of epoxy on the threads and turn them in after I covered the plane. Of course you need to have your center lines in the hinge line. Call Dennis and he can describe this to you.

Daniel,

My first couple of Carden builds I did years back, I too was a little iffy on the control mounts that Dennis has on his planes. After talking to Dennis at length at an event one year, I decided to go with his setup on my next build and gave it a try.

Well a few years ago, I was at an event and to make a long story short, there was an incident with a pilot crashing his big plane in the pit area. The resulting crash ended up sliding up and into my plane with a force that bent the Carden alunium landing gear on a 40% 330 rearward, That is what you read...I could not beileve it. But to get to what you were asking about, here is a pic of one of a set of Rocket City 8-32 control horns that were in my one aileron. Yes, that is the bend from the crashed planes sliding under my 330 and snagging the horn. Bent both control horns, but it never fazed the ply control horn mounts in the wing that were installed per Dennis instructions.

To say the least....I have done my mounts this way ever since. Not a problem to date.

Also a few pics of how I installed them on my most recent 260 Carden build.

Thanks for the photo Joe.
I did not know that foam-epoxy-plywood were strong like that.

I think the way shown is perfectly fine and easier to do then what I have done with both of my cardens. And that is I glue the hardwood blocks into the foam just like the hardwood blocks for the servos before I sheet the wings. I trace around the wing on a large sheet of paper(acurately I might add) and then make a map or blueprint on the paper of where all my harwood blocks are installed. Once the wing is sheeted I can lay the paper over the top of the wing, cut out my servo openings and drill and tap for my control arms. This way your block if it were to pull out would also have to pull out through the sheeting. A few extra steps but if you want a little more security it works. Also, for those that would be concerned if you drilled the center of the block. when you cut out the aileron or elevator from the main section, your cut should butt up against the wood block. You can visually see the block or poke it with a probe and make sure that you drill the center of the block. Jim

I agree with Joe, these blocks work great and in fact Dennis has done testing using dowels and these blocks and the blocks are stronger.
