Hello,

I have a Super Brain 960 that I think could be false peaking. I have seen a MRC rep in here so hopefully I can maybe grab their attention for a second. I have a 3600Mah 6 cell NiMH battery, it only took 38 minutes to "fully" charge (it beeped at me) at 4A is it me or is it false peaking?

Doing the math
3600/4000 = 0.9
0.9*60 = 54

So the math says it should be 54 minutes, but the actual charge time was 38 minutes. If it were 5 min off I wouldn't be so worried, but this is quite a bit more than 5 min. I also notice it does the same thing when i charge my 4200Mah NiMH batteries, they "finish" quite a bit before what the time measurements say they should.

I understand the math is an estimation, but I just wanted to be sure that my charger is working and isn't in need of repair/replacement.

I ran the 3600MAh battery with a 23 turn motor and I got around 8.5 minutes out of it, the strange part is that I got more time out of a 2400Mah NiCD that was charged on the same charger.. albeit only about .5 to 1 min more. The NiCD has around 20 charges in its life and the 3600 has around 3-5 charges total in its life.

I leave all the settings to what the charger auto sets them to when i plug in the battery, the only thing I change is the voltage from 3A to 4A.

My charger also emits a buzzing/whirring like noise when charging, but going through other threads here I believe this this is normal behavior?

Thanks

In my experience, NiMH batteries do tend to false peak on the first couple of charges. But once you get past those it should be fine. Also, a good indication of whether the battery is fully charged is if it's warm. Now that you have a few charges in the battery you can safely charge them at 4.5 amps, and if they're not warm to the touch when the charger shuts off, start it again. This is sort of like a "break in" for the battery. Let me know what happens.

Will it hurt the batteries to start the cycle again at 4.5A after letting it go through a charge right before? I wouldn't want to overcharge them. They don't get as warm as my NiCD's get when they charge, but they do warm up slightly. They seem significantly cooler than what they should be for a charged battery, but maybe its the winter months and the cooler room temps contributing to that also.

I'll try what you said tonight and post back.

Thanks

You won't hurt them. The batteries shouldn't be fully charged if they're not warm (around 120°). The charger will shut off on peak, then the battery will be full charged. NiCds get warmer during the charge than NiMH will.

Tim,

On the second pass with the 3600 battery the top casing of the charger started to literally melt, I stopped the charging process, once cooled down the charger says either "ERR" or just doesn't turn on at all. Edit: It now doesn't power at all, I think its dead.

Can you help please? I am assuming that it is under warranty? It is barely 30 days old.

Thanks
