First, let me say this isn't for an RC vehicle, but I have some lithium batteries that I need to make a charger for. They are 2 "D" size batteries, and are 3.6v each with 13,000mah. I recently came across an ebay auction that had a sony car cell phone charger that had been "converted" for RC use. Can somebody tell me how, and what to start with? Or maybe point me in the direction of a web page that will tell me?

Thanks!

How important is it to use these batteries? You can learn how to charge these without a dedicated Li-Poly charger but if you don't know what you're doing you can blow yourself up.

I would stay away from the converted phone chargers, they are designed to work with a miniature charging circuit in the Lithium battery pack. I've opened scores of Lithium packs and you can clearly see the charging circuit. It's usually attached to the top of the two cells. Secondly they are designed to charge smaller cells, you could be charging for a long time with the large cells you have. If you do a search in the Hobby section of eBay you'll find a Seller who offers chargers for 3 volt and 3.6 volt Lithium cells. I have had both for over a year. I like them, they work well. Hobbico also offers a NiCd/NiMh/Li-ion charger the "mkII". I bought one last fall and have been testing it. The Hobbico works great. It can charge Li-ion 1-3 cell packs at up to 2 amps. That would be a plus for you because of your high capacity cells.

Yes...I really do need to use these batteries, as they hold about 5 times more engergy than anything comparable in NiMh. What would be the cheapest charger I could charge this with? (converted or not)

You need to start thinking "what would it cost me to replace these batteries if I damage them", instead of "cheapest". 13,000 mAh Lithium cells don't walk in off the street. Lithium technology is NOT a forgiving one. If you overcharge and/or over heat them they are history. If you severely discharge them or drain them completely they are history. When you charge Lithium batteries of any type, you must use a charger that is designed for them. The chargers I mentioned are in the $35-50 price range.

Ok...I found out the batteries I wanted to use are not rechargeable...damn. What batteries are used with the converted cell phone chargers? And what can I buy for cheap on ebay to make my own?

Cell phones sure don't need 13,000 mah cells so its illogical to think that one of their chargers would charge a D size Lithium battery.
