here is a link to my new website. http://harrismodelproducts.com/Home_Page.html
My father Don Harris retired 2 years ago making the Don Harris Smoke Pump for those of you who remember. Over the past few months my father and I have engineered a new competition level programmable brushless smoke pump for glow, gas or turbine engine. This new smoke pump is the smallest and lightest in its class, weighing in at only 2.2 ounces. The pump is 2.5" long and 1.5" diameter and runs on a battery pack as small as a 480mAh 2-cell. These pumps will be available January 2008 and will retail for $159.00.
Thanks, Chance Harris email: harrismodelproducts@yahoo.com

The pumps motor is connected to a speed control. The real programing is done via the transmitter. There are two ways of setting this pump up on your TX. You can connect the pumps receiver plug into your retract channel for example, then acess yor ATV/end point adjustment function to increase or decrease fluid flow . The pumps speed controll works just like a servo if you add more travel, flow increases or if you decrease travel the flow rate slows down. The second way to set up this pump is to open a mixing program on your TX and mix a slave channel with throttle. You then can adjust the flow rate of the pump with your slave channel ATV/end point adjustment. With the mix to throttle the pump will work in a linear fashion with the throttle. As you increase throttle the pump flow will increase,or when you reduce throttle to a low rpm the pump will cut back its flow to pump out less fluid. It will save on smoke fluid keep the belly of the airplane cleaner and produce a more even cloud of smoke through throttle transition.

I'll take one....marketing suggestion for you...be sure to include transmitter programming instructions for a variety of different Futaba and JR radios especially the Futaba 9CAP. Will we see you at the AMA show in Ontario, California in January 2008?

Hey my buddy Dave and I flew our QQ pitts pythons over the weekend and had some fun with the smoke. Both Pitts have my smoke pump in them. Take a look. First Pic is me, second pic is me, third pic is Dave and Mine tail to tail with smoke on and last two pics are Dave and his pitts.
Thanks, Chance Harris

Looks like a smokin good time.

If I didn't have my Slimline pump I would be ordering one - can't beat the weight savings!! Nice work. I know a lot of guys don't add smoke because of weight reasons - that should even the playing field for a lot of guys. Man a thunder power two cell 730mAh pro-lite lipo only weighs 34 grams.

The pump Harris is using is a flightbox smoke pump design. I've seen two styles. The one here looks like a Hobbico. The hex screw adjusts the gear clearance. I have seen the coupling before also, but it's been a long time. The coupling will help prevent leaks.

I have made my own brushed pumps from the Sullivan Streamer flightbox pump. Added caps to the motor and installed a speed control. Total cost was $27.00 plus shipping from Tower. Took about 1/2 hour. I always said I should make a brushless design to save battery power. Glad to see you did it.

I was working on was a high pressure system to atomize the oil and get the most smoke from the least oil and posted some data on orifice sizes about two years ago. I was getting good smoke for 7-9 minutes 11 oz on oil.

I priced what it would cost to build your own brushless pump from parts bought at retail prices. Brushless motor; 15.00, brushless esc; 15.00, Horizon or Hobbico hand crank pump; 17.00, derlin for pump coupling; 1.00, aluminum tube and plate and screws; 5.00.

Did you ever post the results of your atomizer?
I would be interested in seeing one, or where you picked one up at.

Thanks

I have not had the time to spend on this project. You can buy an injector from RC Showcase for about $5.00. I don't know how well it works but it is better than just dumping oil in the muffler. I'll get photos of some of the injectors I've made.

Hello,

What motor did you use on your home made brushless pump?
Thanks!

Hello Chance Harris,
I have been flying my RC planes since past 7 years now and do all kind of aerobatics. I wish to move forward with a smoke system and while searching, i found your "Genie in a bottle" pump which facinates me a lot and wish to go for it at once.
But before that i have some simple / silly questions to know about this.

1.) If i install a pump, that means, i do not need to drill the back plate of the engine. right ??
2.) how do i heat up the smoke fluid ??

Please help me get smoke out of the bird.

Thanks in advance.

Hemal

Hermal.

You don't need to tap the motor backplate when using an electric smoke pump. Four strokes and gas engines don't require preheat as much. You can use copper or aluminum 1/8" id capillary/gauge tubing wrapped around the muffler secured with aluminum tape for preheat.
