Yes, sorry. Fluid Ounces. The metric system is easier, but it takes genius's to use the archaic, convoluted ounces system.

ha! if it takes genius's then why are americans using it?  lol. Anyway, if i were you i would do as you suggest. im going to work it in metric as it makes more sense, but:

1 litre (1000ml) of fuel with 15% nitro and 18% oil gives

180ml of oil
150ml of nitro
670ml of methanol

if you double the methanol to 1340ml then you should be running 7.5% nitro and 9% oil.. sounds ok to me or do you want less oil?

or, give up, buy some klotz oil and some nitro and make it yourself :P

Now, by my calculations, if I add 30 oz of pure methanol to the 16 oz of this Powermaster fuel, I will have:

46 oz of 7% oil by volume, fuel.

Which would be:

40.725 oz of methanol
2.875 oz of oil
2.4 oz of nitromethane

Does anyone see anything wrong with my math?

Your math works out to .0625, 6.3% oil. Pretty close.

Up the oil to 3.2 fl oz & reduce the methanol to 40.4. 3.2oz/46oz = .0695, 7% oil.

2.4oz/46oz = .052, 5% nitro

That's a question I've been asking everyone over on this side of the pond for years. Why didn't we convert to metric in 1972 like we had planned? I learned the metric system in 1968 during my senior year because we were supposed to convert.

Furthermore, being a pipefitter, it would make some aspects of my job much easier. For example, the wieght of 1 liter of water = 1 kilogram.

A pipe has an internal volume of 700,000cc, therefore it contains 700 liters of water. When considering the weight that the structure that I hang my pipe from must bear the weight (of the pipe + the water) all I need do is add 700 KG to the weight of the pipe. No calculator needed.

Now, W/the "Imperial" system, I must calculate cu in of volume, divide by 231, (cu in to gallons) then multiply by 8.35 (weight of a gallon of water) to get the weight of the water in the pipe.

Here we go, same pipe. 42,700 cu in/231 = 184.8484848484848484 gal X 8.35 = 1,543.48484848484848# Nothing to it, I did that all in my head, honest!

Tom, I just realized that my math was wrong. I'll recalculate & edit my post in RED.

3.2oz oil (3 1/4?)
40.4oz Methanol (40 1/2?)
2.4oz Nitro.(2 1/2?)

Rounding up to the nearest 1/4oz would yield 46 1/4 oz of 7% oil, 87.6% Meth, 5.4% Nitro.

Gentlemen,

not much prgress here in Austria due to a business trip to Switzerland.

I have, however, picked up the new 50-80cc testbed. Its a well flown in Staufenbiel Stearman (known in the States as the Aeroworks Stearman). First test candidate will be the FS400.

My little helper immediatly fell in love with the pilot. I rather like the passenger and his opinion on female airmen (airwomen?!)...

Hope to put the engine in this week and fly her on the coming weekend.

If she proves to fly as well as the previous owner claims, I will recover her with oratex this winter and scale her up a bit. We will see. For now she has some work to do.

FS 400AR, FA-450R3 and the Laser 300V are waiting for aerial RPM tests Hope I find my telemetry stuff in my mess...

Ha! i might have you beaten rev as mine would have flown last weekend if it were not for this bloody glow driver battery problem! im currently looking at options to test and see if it is this battery. Also have you let your 'helper' loose with a model yet?

Yes, they are a great couple.

Well, engine is in. Me likey.

Only Problem was, that I had to turn it about 5° due to the holes in the firewall from the previous engine(s?).

Tonight the electrics and I am fit to go

Rev, that APC prop has got to go! On a classic Stearman it is begging for a prop that looks vintage.

Right, spent some more nightly hours on the Stearman.

1. I couldn't live with the engine 5° turned so I fixed it. Doubled up the firewall on the inside (what a cr** job...) and put it in dead straight. Makes a hell of a difference.
2. I hate small wheels on RC planes. I got out some literature and figured out how big the wheels would have to be in 1/5th scale. 6" (150mm) is the right size. Well look what I found in a box A pair of low bounce air filled 150mm wheels
3. Complete Glow electronics are in and workling. Throttle linkage is too and I had to fit a new tank as the last one had started giving up to natural decay
4. On special request the APC is gone...

All I have to do now ist rig her up, programm the radio, check CG and we are ready for (re-)maiden.

I have 2 x 3.300 1S and 2 x 4.900 1S for glow batteries. Usually I go through at least three on an intense flying day. Especially if I have problems starting an engine

Mine was a pair of 3300mah NiMh cells in parallel. They came with the 3 pot glow unit i have for the saito 450 (which i dont need as it runs well without it) so i may have asked to much from the cells driving 5 plugs. Also i found it was almost impossible to charge as it would never delta peak. As a result i think i might have over charged it once or twice

hey guys
i flew my t28 today with the asp 400 ... sounded nice and all but i was disappointed with the performance!
brought the plane in for a landing because i couldn't get enough height for a roll!
I checked the cylinders and one of them was cool..it was  running on 4
I have a sonic on board glow system 4.8 volt  ..4000 nimh battery...the battery read 5.27 under load ...When i checked it after the flight which lasted all of 5 min!
it read 4.67....will the lack of battery power effect the engine from firing all 5 cylinders at high rpm  ,,because i had no real power...this plane has better performance with a 45 cc gas engine!
Does anyone have any ideas why the lack of performance  ..The plane weighs 26lbs
and where can i get a battery that lasts longer than ! flight
suggestions appreciated, thanks

On 4 Cylinders the ASP Lacks about 40% Power imho. The question is what Glow Driver you have. I am using a Glow5LP Boost and I can boost the glow power for a couple of seconds if I have the feeling one Cylinder is down by moving the stick to WOT and back quickly. Works well.

Depending on your needle setting it is possible that one of your plugs (usually one of the bottom two) is being drowned. Possibly to an extent, where the glow driver canot do its job on that plug.

Is the engine running well on the ground? If not, try to connect a normal 1,2V Pb Battery (about 10Ah) and leave it on all the time. Will the engine run fine now?

What tach readings are you getting?

Rev

It is done. All rigged up, balanced and ready to go. I did not connect the flying wires for the CG test but they will be on or flying.

I really hope this baby flies well because I would love to redo the Stearman in a nice Oratex covering.

Re-Maiden planned for tomorrow morning. Weather looks passable.

Hi waldo, if you were a pot down im not suprised you lacked performance. I lost a cylinder on takeoff once and it did sap the engines power big time. The thing i dont understand is why your glow driver went flat so fast, are you running glow power to the plugs all the time? if so then why? the other issue is that the model is pretty heavy so that could be part of it. Also we can get into what prop you had and all the rest of it. In fairness though i think the lost cylinder was the major issue and once above about 2000rpm mine will not drop cylinders, its only a low rpm they go out

oh and rev, she looks ace! i have  been working on my P39 as i cant do anything with the 400 right now. I may order a new glow driver but they are £80. as my sea fury has been delayed again (sigh) i might just buy a better driver as my current one is a bit of a bodge

Rev, the Stearman looks awesome with the FS400 on the nose!

Waldo, there are several videos on Youtube of large and heavy planes ripping the sky with the FS400. I think the other guys are spot on, losing one jug killed the power you needed.

thanks guys ...I still don't know why the cylinder stopped working ...on take off it had full power. 3 minutes into the flight you could hear the difference ..checked plug was ok...I might be running it on the rich side...on the 20*10 3 blade what rpm should it be turning at full throttle?
my battery is not holding the charge...sonic are going to send me another..does anyone have any suggestions on what batteries are the best...the driver has a deans connection to the battery..
thanks again...
