Status: offline 		I installed the new C-E-Circlips-Rotor Clips-Retaining Rings tonight.

I do not have a special tool, so I used a combination of a seal hook and a ball head socket screw driver. Three of the e-clips came off fairly easily. But one was a bit*h to get off. My hook kept slipping under pressure and I made a lot of scratch marks on the master rod. They look bad but are superficial and of no consequence. There is no way 3.3 or even 7 lbs is going to toss these clips!

I did notice that the old clips were slightly stretched. But then, these have been installed, removed, installed, and finally removed again.

Interestingly, from the photo's posted in this thread, not all clips used by Sanye are the same. Some clips from Sanye, are black phosphate coated. Some clips, like mine, look like they are stainless steel. I ordered black phosphate coated clips as replacements.

Well, I feel like it was a worthwhile preventative maintenance to perform. Thanks to Rev77 and his insight. Although, Phillip, I did not recall that you had lots of local fellows having their clips fall off.

The weather in my area has been brutally hot, for what seems like months now. We are supposed to finally get some cooling over the next few days and I hope to get my FS400 mounted and tested with the new Rogeau Intake Manifold (RIM) during this time.

My wife loves it when I work on the dining table.



The motor opened up, the stock clips stayed in place during all those video taped runs a couple of years ago:

Do you prefer the Black-finish steel rings than the Stainless steel rings (from McMaster)? which one is stronger or which do you recommend?.

I had been given grief over that same thing for years. Then came the day that the head on her car's engine needed to be rebuilt. Coldest, windiest, wettest winter we've had for years and the shop/shed just would not get, nor stay warm. I told her I would do the messiest parts out there but when it came time for assembly I was going to throw a blanket and a board on the kitchen table. All went well, the car ran great and it was only a few days days instead of weeks that she had to drive one of "the land yachts" which she hates to drive.(my Explorer or one of the boys' Jeeps)


She was happy, I was happy and not a word since when I cover up the dining table and "play tools and stuff" or build.

Status: offline 		jmmt: Technically, stainless steel is not quite as strong as plain steel. But I would not have any qualms about using SS inside the engine. I bought the black ones because it came in a order of 100 pieces versus the SS which was double the price and 1/4 as many pieces.

Status: offline 		Looking at the photos of my engine on page 10 (when it killed itself) mine are stainless i think. And im sure i gave them a little squese to remove the stretch. time will tell

Status: online 		To be honest, the new black clips even LOOK tougher...

Anyways, I had 40 Minutes last night so I started piecing the engine together again. Three cylinders are on, two to go.

fwiw, If you are not a friend of decorative tatoos on your main conrod, you can use two wooden chopsticks to push the clips off. The sandblasted aluminium surface really scratches very easily.

Tom,

I know of at least four engines here in austria where one of these clips has come off on engines that had not been opened. All of them where SS btw. I still think that they are of inferior quality and if not enough care is taken assembling them, they will be so stressed that they may not be up to the job anymore.

Lets be honest, these Engines are not being assembled with tlc by engine specialists/enthusiasts as for example is done at AGC with the Laser engines but by some underpayed chinese bloke or girl who probably doesn't even know (or care) what this chunk of metal is for and is doing so for 12 hours a day.

To be honest, at the end of the day I would probably be yelling "zhū" at every ring while hammering it in with a large blunt mallet...

I have a question about the intake gaskets. Since things do not always go well when I attempt them, what material would you use to replace intake gaskets that may be ripped or torn upon disassembly?

Status: online 		oh joy of joys! my engine lives yet again! finished assembly, hooked everything up, two turns priming and she roared like before! Did take an hour longer than anticipated due to a lost cam follower. turned the whole bl00dy shop over looking for it. finally found it in the front casing o_O. Now the weekend can come

that hat: Its my lucky hat for maidens. I got it from my grandfather (and best friend) before he passed. used to be his motorcycle cap in the thirties. No maiden without it...
