Okay, I have finished the FS-70 overhaul so I will start back on the radial shortly.

I've been following this thread from the beggining and you do have a gift for mechanics.
The last job done on the OS FS70 is marvelous, a true joy to the eye. I wish I had some lights on how to paint engines so well (hint [:D]).
Either way, I hope to see you back on the radial and see that baby humming once again. Keep up the excellent work![8D]

I removed the cylinders from the crankcase today. I had to cut down an Allen key to fit underneath the cooling fins. There is a clear cellophane gasket under the cylinder. You probably can't see it but the gasket is under the bolts heads on each cylinder.

I had previously numbered each cylinder position on the crankcase in pencil. But I wanted something more permanent since the pencil was getting rubbed off. So I stamped, very lightly, the number position on the crankcase.

To remove the name plate from the nose case I drilled the heads off the rivets and pulled the plate off. Then to remove the remainder of the rivets I used a #56 drill bit to bite into the rivet shank and then pull it out of the case.

I had been thinking about painting this engine. But I decided to polish it instead. It will be going into a sport plane of some sort, so I think being polished will give the plane a nicer touch.

Actually, as is typical, I have been sidetracked and am working on something else. That mad Russian МДС 10cc as well as a model boat. But I will be getting back on it soon. I need to do more polishing so the next pics will be of more polished parts. Nothing too exciting. ;)

great thread guys so is this a lone case or are there more unhappy campers out there that have had this engine fail. I have been making enquiries to buying one and have been told they run much better with the carby from the os Radial. My plan was to put one in a 10kg 100" Corsair, do you feel the motor would have the guts to fly this model? The model flies well on a 62 Zenoah.

I got back to working on this engine again. I spent four hours today and got two parts polished. The engine mount, and one cylinder head. Four more heads to go... [&:]

I like the result so far. After the heads are all polished, each one will have to be individually torn down so that the polishing detritus can be cleaned out. As you can see, this is a time consuming process! [8|]

The head is attached to a stick, so that it can be polished and not flung away by the buffing wheel. Also helps with the burned fingers!

First one side is buffed. Then the head is removed, turned around, and the other side buffed.

Well, the process is really quite simple on this one. Because the parts are large enough, I can use the big buffer with the 8" wheel. And lots of brute force.

To preface, on smaller engines like the Saito and OS singles I have done, I will use a combination of needle files, and progressively finer cloth backed abrasive rolls until they are very smooth. Then I use a Dremel with a cotton buff and polishing compound.

On this FS400AR I simply use the big buffer with brown Tripoli buffing compound and go to town on it. The brute force of the big wheel, speed, and compound polishes the parts without needing to sand them first. (Caution must be used, however. Because this thing will grab parts out of your hand and fling them so far you never will find them. Sometimes it will grab a part and when it flings it, it hits the ground first and damages the part. Now that I have learned about these dangers I have moved the buffer so it is against the wall of my shop. At least the parts can be found if they get grabbed out of my hand. [8|] )

Anyway, I just keep applying compound to the wheel and holding the part against it until it shines. [:D]

Three more hours of buffing, and the last four cylinder heads and valve covers are polished.

Now that all the major pieces have been buffed out, I get to do them all again. [X(]

This time with red or "Jewelers" rouge buffing compound. This will give the metal that jewel like quality I am looking for. [8D]

I have an ASP 400-SR that I plan to put into a Concept 1/4 scale fleet bipe. I have had the engine for about a year and have not run it yet. I purchased it through e-bay. It has never been run and am I glad I have waited. After seeing what happend to kmot, I have decided it might not hurt to tear down the engine and replace the link pins.

Thanks for sharing all the info on your ASP 400 kmot, for sure you have helped a lot of people as a result .
