Well my Pacer is almost ready for test runs with the new exhaust. I was silver soldering away happily the other evening with some success! I hope to get a video soon once i have worked out why the onboard glow has decided not to work propperly

Can you post a pic of your exhaust?

i will as soon as i get home. 4 of the cylinders have flexi on them and one has a standard exhaust so i have use of a pressure nipple. the way i have done it is not exactly pretty but it should at least be functional as all of the exhausts exit below the model to help prevent the engine spraying goo everywhere

Right then. Had some drama today as the brakes on my car siezed up while driving to work, so after work i spent a while fixing them and changing the worn out pads. that meant it was getting dark when i got home. unflustered i wanted to run my 400.....shame it refused to start...eventually it screamed into life at something close to full power, my throttle was doing nothing so i killed the glow and fuel supply. the problem was the throttle linkage not being tight....oops. anyway after a very stubborn series or restart attempts i did get it going, but it was too dark for the video and i didnt want to loose an arm in the dark. also the tuning was all to cock and i couldnt be dealing with it. However, it did sound pretty mighty with the new exhaust. as i say, its not attractive but it seems to work. the model was quite clean after the run

Right then. I had another go at the 400 today and i almost kicked the whole model over the fence. for reasons i cannot begin to understand it refuses to start in any kind of useful way. by that i mean it takes 15 minutes to get it going. i have cleaned the carb as i suspected fuel issues to begin with, i have tried tuning to no avail. my lingering suspicion is the glow driver as the plugs are not glowing bright orange, in fact they are only just a dull red...sometimes. the thing is as its always started before i have never looked at the plugs and so dont know if they were always like that. however something has changed as it never used to be this much of a pain in the butt. Anyway, i did get it started but it wont idle below 2000rpm and it will just run down and stop. i did get a video however so at least you can hear it.

What Glow Driver do you have?

I had a very similar issue. Glow5LP. Plugs only luke warm. no idle. Tried running the engine on a 1,2V Lead battery and everything went fine.

Sent the Driver in and recieved it today. Will try on the Weekend.

Dang, I hope I don't find a bad glow driver when I get ready to run my engine again. I also use the Microsens.

As i say im not 100% sure its the glow driver. all i know is that it was working well on the bench and now its not. if it is the glow driver i have no idea what has happened to it as nothing has changed and it was working just fine. Sigh. i will fully cycle the glow battery to make sure its not died as its possible a cell has gone down and it cant provide the current any more. We will see.

OK, it is time to jump in. Hobby King has the ASP 400 radial in stock right now. I just ordered one today. I already have two other radial engines including a Saito 200 Radial and a UMS Evolution 777 radial engine. I plan to put the ASP 400 in my 80" CMP Zero. I think that will be a good combination. I have been a bit reluctant to purchase the ASP 400 because of others problems and failures that were posted on the web. However, I really like my radials so I am going to give it a shot.

Best wishes and good safe flying,

Heli-NuBee (Roger)

Hi Nubee. In fairness to the engine i think most of the issues reported online are the only issues as all the people with no issues are happily flying! Also my SC is not representative of the current quality of the engine as frankly, mine is rubbish. that said when it is actually working and not broken it runs very well and makes a nice noise to say the least!

In anycase the cmp zero has been a very popular home for the 400. I assume the soon to arrive ESM zero will be as well. Either way i look forward to video of the engine in action

Speaking of Merlins.

This is the closest sound to a Merlin I have found in a reasonably priced glow engine.

I picked one up NIB for a great price from an e-bay vendor in the spring. It was definately NIB. It was a museum piece from a collecter.

It fits into an 83" Brian Taylor MK I-V Spitfire cowl like a glove.

OK, back to the ASP 400R5.

Yes, but we are talking BIG bucks there.

I think that engine cost more than a 400cc Moki.

I love watching that video. It even sounds better than my 300v twin! but only just

But, while it sounds great and would be ideal in a racing aeroplane or a pitts or extra, but still not right for a warbird :P

How about this one?

A trio of ASP400R5s in a smaller version would sound pretty good too I'l bet.

sorry guys but im not impressed. at idle it sounded ace, but he flew it too fast and it was far from scale. Also at the higher speeds the engines were beginning to whine. When he did some 'slow' passes the model sounded much better, but even these passes were about twice the speed they should have been. i see the lufthansa ju52 fly at duxford almost every year and its like its hardly even moving forward most of the time, it just purrs along. a shame as the model looks awesome on the ground

I need to mix up some fuel, and I must start out with using commercial fuel.

I need fuel with 7% oil by volume.

I have Powermaster 15% Sport fuel, which is 18% oil by volume.

My math is as follows:

128 oz of fuel =
86 oz of methanol
23 oz of oil
19 oz of nitromethane

If I take 16 oz of the fuel, I have:

10.725 oz of methanol
2.875 oz of oil
2.4 oz of nitromethane

The above is still 18% oil by volume.

Now, by my calculations, if I add 30 oz of pure methanol to the 16 oz of this Powermaster fuel, I will have:

46 oz of 7% oil by volume, fuel.

Which would be:

40.725 oz of methanol
2.875 oz of oil
2.4 oz of nitromethane

Does anyone see anything wrong with my math?

He stated oz "by volume". That would be fluid oz.
