pretty much what I do except I just heat the tube over a candle. Low tech but it works. For druz fasteners I use larger diameter, burn the rivey outline in then use a sharp small screwdriver and heat it, then burn the line in at the correct angle to the panel line.

All tedious work but it is very relaxing and rewarding. I also use artist silver relvef paint in a small tube for raised head rivets.

Pics dont really do it any justise, will get her out side when weather picks up and take a few more.

Thanks for the positive comments. I am waiting on a pair of wheels from fighter aces before i can really do a lot more. I would like to do a silver colour scheme, but in past experiance, it never appears to look about right. When the time comes to build my next warbird i will use something like the material Graham kindly suggested. This time i will make do with silver paint, has anybody got any suggestions as to which silver to use to get a nice realistic looking finish???

Hi Frank,

Yes the chrome paint I now use is Lesonal Platnum and Alsa Mira Chrome, they are both expensive but if you want that true chrome / Ali finish, you got use them, unless you want to go for that sticky on stuff .

You are about the right stage, you now need to paint the airframe gloss Black before you apply the chrome,I would also do this if you deside to go for another paint system.

Regarding where to get the Lesonal Platnum paint, we at Tiger will be tining up and selling, or if you wanted I could chrome it for you as we are set up to do this,we are busy at the moment with 2 Comp P51's and my P38, but if you get it ready in the Gloss black I'm sure we could squeeze her in..

Here is a link to the last P51 I did in Mira Chrome.

Thanks for the info Graham, your finishes are superb. I dont mind the expense of the Platnum paint if a finish as good as yours is possible. I have some good spraying gear and its something i enjoy, so a thousand thanks to you for the offer of of squeezing mine in at a time when your so busy.

I would be very intrested in purchasing some of the Lesonal Platnum paint from you when you tin up. Please let me know. Once my wheels arrive i will have plenty to keep me occupied, i,e cutting for the gear and then glassing ect so im in no rush for the paint.

Again, thankyou and thanks for the intrest and help in my project.

Cheers, Frank.

Hi Frank,

No Probs,
If you like painting your going to love this stuff, the hardest part of it all is the amount of prep work you are going to have to do,I keep on saying this but I have had to learn the hard way and have been striving to get that real chrome finish for years, and yes this is as good as it gets paint wise.

Here is the link to my refurb on a Ziroli P38,I will be using the lesonal on this one ,I'm about the same stage as you,I have just got to start all the riveting

Frank it's a pleasure to help you out wherer I can,I do know how hard it is somtimes to source all these things.
What scheme are you going for, maybe my good friend Jasonp51d can help you out,if there is anything you want to know about the P47 he is your man.
Here is Jason's web site: http://www.361fg.com/

Of to watch the Footie now, what do you think the our chances are!!!!!!!

Cheers Graham

How does this aluminum appearing finish system stand up to gas or glow exhaust residue? Fine aircraft in this thread very fine indeed-

Ive spent absoloutley ages messing about with the cowl. First attempt at checkering, it must of took me 16 hours at least to prep it and about 2 mins to spray it. My wife says i have a illness. Once it all dried thoroughly, ive lightley gone over the rivets and panels with some well worn wire wool to bring em through slightly. Pleased with the outcome.

I have sprayed the first coat of the finish colour. Its from the Warbird range, U.S olive drab. Didnt have no problems useing it, just seems strange putting water through the spray gun. Unbelivable our tuff this stuff is, wet and dries back just like cellulose. Ive decided against a chrome finish but will definitly go with it next time, i will use Lesonal Platinium from Tiger models. I ve added a picture of the scheme im doing.

Thats my oldest son, hes the chief helper.

The second and final coat as now been applied. Im really impressed with this paint, it produces a fine finish and is very hard. I would recommend it, just ensure you have some good spraying tackle and ensure plenty of pressure. I intend to leave the fuse now and concentrate on the wings.

As can be seen in the pics i have made the canopy slide open, i didnt give any thought to locking it in place whilst flying. I am able to get access to the mechanism from inside the fuse and i intend to insert a spring type pushrod which will exit through the bottom of the fuselage. The pin will sit in the rail, behind the canopy slider to lock it in place. Will this be adequete to do the job?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Frank

Hi Frank,
Glad to see your still with us!!!

Frank why dont you put a retract servo in to open and close the canopy!!it seems you have done all the hard work grtting it to slide freely so adding a servo should be sraight forwad, the reson I said retract servo is,they move slow and they are strong enough to keep shut in the air,the down fall though is the travel of the retract servo,it will be open or shut.

Cheers Graham.
