The primary goal of this event is to prepare new pilots and judges for the fun and excitement of scale competition. To provide hands on education for new pilots, refresher capabilities for existing pilots/judges and a more efficient path to get judges ready for the new contest season.

The event will be held on May 10th, 2008 at the Dusters field in Woodburn, Oregon.

Dusters R/C Club

We have enlisted existing Scale Masters Judges and award winning competitors as the instructor staff. This will allow for real time feedback and the ability to get questions answered on the spot.

This bootcamp will be broken up into 3 simultaneously run classes during this day. The day will breakdown as follows:

Opening ceremonies
Welcome from the Western District Manager for the US Scale Masters

Then we break everyone up into their chosen area of learning

Contestant

a. Introduction
b. Documentation
c. Registration
d. Static Judging
e. Flying your rounds

Static Judges

a. Instruction
b. Tests
c. Practical

Flight Judges

a. Instruction
b. Test
c. Practical

Concessions will be available at the field

While some of the details are still being developed, this will be well organized and very beneficial. We hope to have some best practices “breakout sessions” lead by experienced competitors which will help new pilots with any additional questions they may have.

Then a brief closing at the end of the day.

I am sure that you will have questions, please feel free to contact me by e-mail if you have any questions about this event and I will be happy to help!
If this is something you would like to participate in as a Student Pilot or a Student Judge, please contact me so I can start logging the interest. This
will help with planning the logistics for the bootcamp.

This event is the first of it's kind to my knowledge; we are doing this to build a package that any club can obtain and put on their own Bootcamp. There are a few things you will want to do when you come to this event

(1.) Bring something to sit on during the lecture portions
(2.) Bring pen/pencil and paper so you can take notes during the day
(3.) Bring a flyable airplane with you (So you can go through a practice static and fly practice rounds)

This event is free... there is no charge to the participant; to help keep any out of pocket cost to me down I would appreciate if everyone that attends downloads the latest Competition Guide from the US Scale Masters Website. Please print this guide out and bring it with you to the Bootcamp. The Competition Guide can be found at the:
US SCALEMASTERS WEBSITE

It is my goal that we get great feedback from this event so we will be able to put together a very strong package for other clubs to use!

Rick

this sounds like a good idea. The IMAC workshops that where held here in AZ brought in a number of curious pilot. 35 i believe, and over half of them are still flying contests two years later.

I really wish I could go to that. It sounds like what I need to get started in scale. This idea may be out in left field, but is there any chance of video taping the segments and making them available? If anyone knows of anything like this in the San Diego area, please pass along any info. Thank You.

Ken

Hi mrbassman,

We will be video taping the sessions at this event; there has been a discussion of making a video available. Once we are completed with our event in May and reformat the content based on the feedback of the participants we will be sending this up to National. The goal is at that point to make this available to any club that wishes to hold one of these Bootcamps.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have!

Hello All,

Looks like the weather is going to cooperate with us (at least Saturday) and the boot camp is going to be a HUGE Success without a doubt!
We have all seen Scale participation dwindle over the years and the economy is not making it any easier for us. This is the best mechanism we
have for attracting new pilots and judges into the world of scale flying. Keep in mind this weekend’s event is the beta for this Boot Camp format;
I expect that mistakes will be made and I also expect that we will build a rock solid format because of our efforts.

You may not be aware of this; scale organizations in other countries have made inquiries about adopting the format we develop here. This is huge;
others see the value in what we are doing and want to build on the idea. This means that we are on the right track and will build something that will have
an international influence in Scale.

The Student Resource CDs are being finalized and I will start creating these over the next couple of days. The logistics seem to be in order and I so
see nothing that will be a show stopper at this point. We will be laying things out on Friday and there will be a Staff Meeting at the field at 7:00 am Saturday morning.

The Boot Camp starts promptly at 8:00 am; we have to keep the program on schedule to ensure that we have enough time to get everything accomplished.

I look forward to seeing all of you that have committed to attend; let’s make history here folks!

Sincerely,

Rick Dunn
