I've seen several people here talk about enlarging plans but has anyone ever tried shrinking them? I would love to build the larger planes but don't have the field to fly them on. We are are somewhat limited by a short runway and noise retrictions.

What I'm thinking is Nick Ziroli's P-40 scaled down somewhat to about 1/6 or 1/7 scale.

Is this possible? Would it retain it's flight characteristics?

And you know it's sad when I'm not even done with this winter's project and I'm already thinking about next winter's project... :-)

It can be done but would probably be easier to just purchase a 1/6 th scale kit. I have seen several very nice planes built from the Pica kit. The kit probably wouldn't end up costing that much more compared to tracking down the cowls and accesories for the shrunken Ziroli. Just a thought Glenn

I have done this too. Same think only backward. Take them to Kinko's and have them reduced. You do not have to worry about flying characteristics. The only affect would be weight vs. size. Keep it light. Models are not big enough...for the most part...to get into Reynolds airfoil problems.

I've thought about going with a Pica 1/6th scale but I haven't heard people rave about how it flies like I have the Ziroli birds. Not saying that they are bad fliers though as I've heard some good things about them (as opposed to the TF P-40's), just not as much as I have about the Ziroli plans...

And I thought I might use a canopy/cowl off the Pica or TF (depending on scale). I was mostly worried about airlfoil and basic flight characteristics. And you have a good point about the weight. I'll be sure to try and retain the same wing loading.

BTW, I've copied plans at Kinko's and, when compared to original plans, they didn't match up. Come to find out the rollers used to pull the plan through induced a "wave" into the copied plans. Was enough that one point was off almost a quarter inch (wing spar) from one end to the other. My draftsman brother-in-law has pointed me to a place that does professional work that I hope is better.

Thanks for the help!

FYI, I ran some numbers for scale comparisons. Real P-40E had a wingspan of 448 inches and length of 347 inches. So that should make it;

Scale WS Length
1/7 64 53.43
1/6 74.66 57.83
1/5 89.6 69.4

WS Length
TF P-40 (1/7) 64 54.25
Pica P-40 (1/6) 71.25 61.5
Pica P-40 (1/5) 86 74
Ziroli (1/5?) 94 77

Ok, color me surprised to find that the most true-to-scale was the Top Flite kit!

You must have had a bad experience. I have enlarged no less than 8 sets of plans to enlarge and build big warbirds from and never had a problem. LAst winter I built this 120 inch Ziroli P-40 enlarged at Kinkos. 13 flights and counting. Good luck with whatever you decide.
