I love the look of the custom sand rail!  I've wanted to do a 1970's vintage style (down to the over-flaked paint like that on the old boardwalk kiddy rides) Buggy ever since I found out about the FAV.  Do it Dante, do it!!

Hi guys,
Just received the wild one yesterday and set about pulling it apart for a rebuild. It's in rather good condition, only there is a separation in the roll cage at the point where a front section joins at the alum. cross member. I'll drill, pin and glue it for the time being.
The gears felt okay and smooth when i rotated the outdrives, so as i pulled it apart i did not take any notice of what was inside (watching a damn good movie at the saame time is not recommended). I found inside all the bevel gears, counter and diff spur gears and the following: 2 off 11x8x5 bearings, 2 off 8x5x2.5 bearings and 1 off 8x5x2.5 metal bush.
There's no 5mm washer or any differential spacers.
Should these be in there?
Have i missed the fact that the last owner "fixed" the diff issues?

Any advice would be greatly appricated

Regards colin

If you go back to page 12, you can see a couple of pics of the gearbox opened up. You can compare yours to that. Also, you can go to TamiyaClub and sign up for the membership. You can then download the owner's manual and see what goes into the tranny.

Good luck! Keep us posted!!

Thanks LB
Went with a 8x5 bush from the counter gear as it makes a perfect preload spacer for the diff. Just slipped it on the non motor side output shaft, between the bearing and the bevel gear. I also slipped in a shim on the other side. I'll see how it goes.
Here are some before and after restoration shots.

It will be ran, we have a vintage RC festival in Sydney on the 25th April so as I'll be running my Hotshot in the 4WD, i wanted a 2WD and just loved the scale look of the Wild One. Brought it for $160 AUD from a bloke in NZ. Although once this weekend is is over and i get new wheels and tyres over it might end up on the shelf until the next vintage meet.

I have read through this entire thread. THis is the only tamiya wild one thread I found with so much info and pics. I have recently scored a tamiya FAV which i will restore as a wild one. I want to know exactly were do I need to add the washer to make the gearbox more durable. There were some links here for making a new gearbox cover but no pics about were to add the washer. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome! I'm glad that you found the thread useful.. That's the goal! Please post some pics of your project when you have a chance.

If I have to guess, I'd guess that you want to add some shim / spacer (see post #296) to push the differential ring gears closer to the spider gears for proper meshing. Of course, you shouldn't over do it or the diff will not be smooth. I'd try 1 or 2 shims and use a lot of grease on the surface.. ! And if the diff is too tight, then you'd have to reduce the #..

Thank you for the quick reply. I read evry post but shomehow forgot about that post.SO the washer shims are required only for the diff gear right not the countergear. And do u put washers on bot sides of the diff of just one side? Also are there any good paint schemes for the wild one. I dont want to do the box art. I was hoping of doing a off white or silver paint with the original decals. How does that sound.

If you don't have the original manual, I would suggest you to sign up for a membership at TamiyaClub. You can download the manual there and see exactly where shims are needed from the original manual. What I said was that you might want to add more than the recommended # of shim as the manual, if you feel that the mesh between the ring and spider gears are loose..

I don't have the answer on whether you need the shim on both sides or so you'd have to experiment with the setup yourself. Unfortunately I never ran mine.. ha!!

Good luck!!

I should receive the package by friday. There is a manual included so thats good. I am going to try and fit the modern gearboxes from taxxas stampede. They are much stronger and easy to find parts for. The only challenge will be to find a good CVD. I will definitely post my findings on that . I will also have to brace the chassis which I know is weak.

I would call this a "hybrid" project. I gotta see what a Traxxas tranny looks like on a Tamiya.

Pls post pics of the build. You can also try fitting the Robinson Racing or Thorp L.S.D. to the Wild One chassis. It's the ultimate upgrade in bulletproofing this classic buggy's transmission.

Check out "flea-bay". Do a search under Tamiya Blackfoots. There's two (2)of them selling Thop & Robinson racing L.S.D's right now. These are vintage Hop up parts and are no longer in production.

Yup. Look under "Thorp" . There's acually three (3) of them selling for use on Tamiiya Blackfoots. These are compatible for use with the Wild One buggy.

Robinson racing L.S.D's are the "telescoping" version. Often they are misidentified by sellers as Thorp because far fewer Robinson Racing L.S.D's are availabe for sale used.

Check out these. All of them are from members of Tamiyaclub.com. Hope they don't mind posting them here.
My favourite is white with black cage!
