Hey Peter. Probably it just needs the driver installed. Do you hear any other sounds from the computer at all? Or is it always silent, like when you play games and stuff too?

Anyway, this should be the driver for your soundcard, try installing it and see what happens. http://www.driverskit.com/freedownload/Sound_Card/Realtek/ALC880_ALC260_ALC861_HD_R1_09/15315.html

If you normally get sound from other applications then there should be NO NEED to install the driver above. The problem is something else in that case. Let me know.

Have you just reinstalled Windows by any chance? Something must have happened to have all this happen at once...

Here's what I think you should do. Save everything you want/need onto a large flash drive or separate hard disk, then run the full recovery program which will have come with the computer. It should be a CD which says recovery disk, or reinstallation disk. Normally what this disk will do is restore your PC with it's preloaded version of windows, with all the necessary drivers installed. No doubt it will need heavy updating afterwards, but at least you won't have to search for drivers. If you can't find or have lost this recovery disk, there are a number of utilities you could try which are on the support site from HP. Here is the support page for your system (I'm guessing it's actually a Pavilion a1221n, the full part number, it will be on a sticker somewhere on the outside of the box itself)... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1148037&lang=en , it has all the drivers you may need except sound for some reason.

I'd suggest (if you can't find the recovery disk), that you try the HP Software Update Utility first (at the bottom of that page I linked above)... Back up everything you don't want to potentially lose, right now, to save a disaster happening if anything goes wrong. Bear in mind if you do run the recovery disk, it will be clean, like it came from the factory, you'll have to reinstall EVERYTHING.
