vdubsport -> home made project pics, gearing question (12/20/2007 6:12:40 PM)

so i took my road car dragstr and decided to make my own. The chassies is all carbon fiber with all home made parts except for the rerend it from a bolink setup i got off of ebay. I also step up and bought a brushless sestem for nova. but now i have some gearing questions dom i run a 64p or a 48p setup with brushless. also do i gear it as a touring car or what i been trying to follow the setup sheet to get a final drive ratio but no luck any help would be great. Right know i have a 48p 81 spur gear with a 20 pion gear but i also have a 64 p 122 spur gear with a 35 pion gear what setup is better?

Im new to drag racing, but I got to say your car looks amazing! I am about to make my own custom dragster.

Nice looking setup man. I like the front wheels alot.

hrnts69 -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (12/21/2007 2:02:17 AM)

NICE!!! Were did you get that kind of Carbon Fiber at, and how thick is it???

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (12/21/2007 11:43:31 AM)

the carbon is a little thinner than a eight of a inch thick or so, I got it a while back when my buddy was cleanig out his shop some of it is from a car i worked on that the carbon hood was damaged so i got it after we replaced it. A good place to look online is at tap plastics you can get already preformed sheets of it read to go or u can order by the yard and form it ur self. The wheels are home made from touring car wheels ,anybody have any good gearing setups?[:D]

Hey vdubsport,

I run 48p gears. HPI spurs worked best for me. Robinson Racing Products aluminum pinions. 64p will offer more gearing options, but the 48p seem stronger for RC drag racing applications. "Most" of the cars competitng use 48p.

I'd say 48p is good for E.T.'s down to around 1.9sec. Below that they are strained. I base that comment on the fact that "many" Top Fuel electric cars use a spur gear a run (!). Yeah, you read right. Gets kinda expensive to use 48p in the 1.67sec range. That's the current IMDRA TFE record.

FWIW, I'm gearing my TFE using 32p. Limited gearing options and steel (!heavy!) pinions. "Most" of the Extreme Class cars are going to 32p-at least here in Texas. For your application, again, I'd recommend 48p.

Gearing? The way I do it is to gear to the national record and adjust from there. Example, current TFE mph record is 74.9mph. I back-plan my gearing from that speed. That is my starting point for gearing. As far as your application, I hesitate to hazard a guess. When I first began RC drag racing, I set my car up by marking off a 132ft course and using a Venom Speed Meter (VSM) to gear for max speed. The speed read-out doesn't need to be accurate. It just have to reflect better or worse performance for a given gear ratio. Later, I ran an actual RC drag strip with the VSM attached, and calibrated the VSM to my timing slips. Actually, for what it costs, the VSM wasn't that far off, and it was a big tuning help.

Hope this helps. Have fun.

Hey Bodyman,

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLSS9&P=0

Not sure if you're asking about mine in "My Models" or the black one above. BUT, I think they're the same bod. Thanks. Link above is where I got mine. Most LHS usually carry a variety of HPI bodies or can get one for you quickly. Again, be aware, it's a BIG body for a doorslammer drag chassis.

Hello Dre,

Houston has a a dragracing club now. Check out www.hamdrl.com

The "dragstrip" is 1/10 scale, thus 132 feet long.

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 5:21:57 PM)

Pulled the drag car off the shelf today and started looking at new ideas, havn't worked on it for quiet a while , I redid the drag bar and trimed the the body on the ground also found some time to get the vms speed meter hook up so i could do some test runs with the car. The car has only seen the pavement once and it has no brakes witch lead me to my first of two quick questions if the novak brushless esc has three drag brack setup witch one is the best for drag racing, i mean do you want it to pull back on the car very hard wen you let up or soft and go to a stop very slowly? also witch on of these tires is better for racing the 1/10 or 1/12?

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 5:26:16 PM)

Here are some more pictures, one more question where do you guy get those coll detailed engines sticking out of ur hoods also are they glued or bolted to the hood or are they bolted to the chasises with a cut out in the hood?

justinep -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 5:46:32 PM)

Do I smell a camaro heads up race for pinks? ok ok just braggin rights

if I win, I want your front wheels! haha

Great car man!

justinep -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 5:54:08 PM)

is that an old hpi 64pitch I spot?

snellemin -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 7:34:12 PM)

On tires, I use either sizes. I just swap gearing.

His front tires are nice. Justin have you played with the excel sheet yet?

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 8:04:09 PM)

I just pulled it of the shelf havn't had much time to play with the set up sheet, as for the hpi gear i have a 48p and a 34p and other gears i just havent had time to change them out was going to do that next, with the other gears it sounds so clicky is that normal, and yes there lined up perfect with a paper gap.

justinep -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 8:36:12 PM)

Looks great dude.. sorry, looked like a 64 pitch (old purple hpi ones) and though to myself how fast that will be stripped. I find 48 perfect.. 32 is a bit clunky for me though for smooth running the 64 pitch is as quite as it gets! Good luck to you

Romano, I have been messin with the data sheet. Its extremely helpful, I am just gathering more info from my car to enter in. Great job.

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (2/29/2008 8:43:44 PM)

it is a 64 but i am going to to change it to a 48 later to day, question what size tire are u runing on your car? 1/10 1/12

xlt69er -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (3/5/2008 11:37:53 PM)

Even though there is no where around here to race drag rc's. You guys have inspired me to start my own drag car. How much is it for the bolink rear setup?

vdubsport -> RE: home made project pics, gearing question (3/6/2008 12:44:37 AM)

i had to buy mine from ebay, it was 35 bucks but their were to old bolink chassies but it all cam with the whole rear end even rims and tire just look for some one on ebay try to get rid of a old bolink chassis provided it all looks good of corse.
