I saw this post on the NMPRA site, and thought it might fit here as well. There are several great reasons, I even got choked up a time or two. I have spent my life competing, from Pee-Wee sports on up, I have raced cars, oval and drag, motorcycles, and sailboats. Shoot I'll race shopping carts at Wal-Mart, as long as its a race.

I RACE because it's what I love.

P.S. if someone could maybe link the other site, to this one, THANK YOU

I have also raced all things full scale from bicycles up.
A friend joked I would race caterpillars if I had two of them.

2007 was the first year my brother and I raced q500. We raced in in District 3 after many, too many years of sitting on the fence watching. It has been absolutely one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. Were we first, nope, were we last, nope, but meeting new people and learning things from those that have been in it for a long time was a great experience.

It is truly a great experience with a lot of great people, that is why I race. I encourage those that have been sitting on the fence watching to dive in, in whatever class of racing is in your area.

I know what you mean. My wife and I have gotten into many fights over everything from competition on public roads (I am not talking about some young kid in his pony car) to who's gonna make it to the checkout first at the grocery store. She says it's a sickness and I need help but she's never convinced me of that.

I race to keep other people from winning . . . people like Vicman

Really I don't like this retrospective examination. I have a lot of bizarre behaviors and analyzing why I race may lead to examining other behaviors that are best left unexamined.

Sorry Vic . . . I could not resist poking at you. Merry Christmas my friend

This answer might sound very strange in this forum, but its true, I heard it from a very respected Psychiatrist and it make sense.

We race because it is a way to resignify our masculinity (Same way we meet to some other men to drink, play poker, etc)

In past years it was very clear what men do and what women do, it was very clear the roll differentiation, but that has been lost now a days.

Racing is one of many ways in which we make clear and solidify our masculinity to ourselves and others.

Just trying to bring some science to the insight of why we race.
Kind Regards

So you are saying I have five hundred and TEN inches on my Q-500 to make up for some other inadiquacy or deficiency?

I do belive racing fits into some of my other addictive behaviors. Of all the things I have gone as fast as possible with (mostly due to equipment) I have never gone too fast.

Vicman:

Ahhhhhhhhhh. You just have not lived well and long enough. Too fast is when your parashute has not opened properly and you have 5-600 feet left to get it right. Too fast is when your in a sports car race, cornering over 100 mph and the right front tire blows. Too fast continues when you spin into the guard rail and rupture the gas tank. To fast is when when your dirt bike racing in the Vet Nationals and you can pass for first by jumping tripples and you only clear two of the three. To fast is when you are scooting to your girl friends on a old Harley along a windy road and some idiot drump truck driver has scattered gravel all throuh the curve. (ouch) To fast is when that screemer is flat out of sight in 2 to 3 seconds (your sight). Fast enough us when you bail out and outrun the heat behind you. Fast enough is when you are in your girl friends room doing pushups, you hear mom opening the front door and you get out of the window in time. Enough. ENJOY

It gives me a reason for beeing there. If I go out to the field and just fly , That is kid of boaring to me. But on race day I get exsighted and have a real reason for coming out to the field. I beleave that everybody wants to win the war. So why not go for the Gold.

Jeff: Yea, guess your half right. The too fast part is when the bike spits you over #3 and you are flying over the jump and waiting to see if you are making a trip to the hospital, again. Good part, you wake up in one piece. Bad part, smashed front wheel, you would have been #1 if you had cooled it and not gotten so excited to pass a guy named Brad Lakey, Europes MX champ 4 years ago. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh poo.

I have been in turn 4 with only one wheel (inside front) touching the track with the back two coming around and several feet in the air wishing it would get over with sooner. I rest my case.

Other than my honeymoon night I have never gone too fast sir!
