Hi,

I am close to finishing my Top Flite F4U-1A Corsair and intended on building my 1/4 scale F4U-1A Corsair next. I decided I needed a break from the Corsair for an extended period of time or I might not be able to stay motivated. I will be building this Pup instead for now. I should be starting on it in about a month. If anyone has built it please feel free to pitch in with any helpful advice. I also ordered a Zenoah G-45 for power. I hope this will do a good job of pulling around a 29lb. bipe. The winspan is 108" and the fuselage length is 77". It should and I hope it is a fun project for some time to come. Here is my Pup.

GLAD TO SEE ANOTHER PERSON GOING INTO A WWI AIRPLANE. JUST A HEADS UP FOR YOU YOU ARE GOING TO NEED MORE THAN A G-45 FOR THAT PLANE. A G-62 WILL FLY IT SCALE AND YOU WILL NEED TO ADD A LOT OF NOSE WEIGHT. A GT-80 IS BETTER NO WEIGHT AND MORE POWER. AND A ZDZ 80 WOULD BE GREAT BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO STILL ADD SOME NOSE WEIGHT. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU THIS IS JUST BASED ON WHAT I HAVE SEEN AND FLOWN ON MY BUSA 1/3 PUP. I HAD A G-62 AND IT WOULD FLY IT VERY SCALE AND NOT MUCH ROOM ERROR.

G62 is the eng;prop is zinger 22-6-10 = OR 22-8-14 , my Pup is 32 lbs which is 4 lbs or so over the average one I know of !!,thats 'cause i have a fancy colorful latex paint job . Never had to put any weight at all in the nose , do have a mick reeves dummy eng; though [its plastic ] & a few straps to hold it in place , used the muffler that came with the Zenoah , but blocked the louvre type exhaust & silversoldered a piece of 1/2 " copper pipe in place . pretty quiet too . I originally had a menz 22-10 prop & it was gutless .

Great decision, and a great flying plane. I have only one flight on mine before winter set in. There is a thread on page 5, RC Scale Aircraft where I have documented the complete build. The thread was started by someone else and I just added to it. As I built mine I added weight to the front as I went along, and did not require much weight to achieve balance. I am using a G-62, seems to be plenty of power, but I only have one very good flight, so cannot comment on performance. She was fun to build, and my first attempt at using dope, the results were great. Good luck and keep us posted.

Craig.

PS, we must be thinking the same but in reverse, I am getting ready to start a Byron Corsair.

WoW, I can't see the need for anything bigger than a G62 unless weight is the only reason. Mine had a G62 in it & yes I did have to add nose weight but as far as power the G62 was more than enough fo it. I never flew it above 1/3 throttle. Takeoff roll was very short. PLENTY of power to spare. Enjoy it as it is a FUN BIRD.

Not so much for the weight, but I wanted to swing that 32X10 prop with some authority.

You Guy's are great,

Thanks for letting me know what engine to use. It's to bad because I just sold a NIB G-62 several months ago when I decided to build a 1/4 scale Corsair instead of Top Flites's Giant Corsair. I had the bell mount and starter spring along with the carb linkages. I didn't get hurt to bad on the sale but now I need one. I cancelled my order via e-mail to Cheif Aircraft and reordered a G-62 after reading your post yesterday TSHARK203. The rest of you are appreciated also for backing up my decision based on one post. You Guy's Pups look fantastic. I was thinking of covering it with 21st Century Fabric and then painting it with an automotive 2 part enamel with my spray gun. What are your opinions on that decision. Right now I'm finishing up on my Son's TF 1/8 scale Corsair that is made as close to scale as possible. I still have about a month to go on his before I start on the Pup. I was going to build my Don Smith 1/4 scale F4U-1A Corsair but I think I need a break from Corsairs for one build. I'm really looking forward to building a WWI Warbird anyway. I only build Warbirds now and the 1/8 scale Corsair is my first after years of building large civilian aircraft.

Keep the input comming,

Gibbs

Engines,

Well I have already ordered the G-62 so I guess I'll stick with it. Where did you guy's get the nice wheels? I couldn't find them on Balsa USA's web site. Help me out, maybe I just don't know my way around their site. Two great paint jobs. You guy's have way to much time on your hands. I'm going to copy the paint scheme from the Double R ranch Pup in the movie Flyboys.

which wheels do you want. the wire wheels or the dubro wheels. i have and extra set of each in 1/3 scale. and i have to agree with ty about the gt-80. you can swinging closer to a scale prop with the bigger engine, but the g-62 will fly it just fine.
