Ed, what about making wings like the Q500 guys. How are they laying up, and then joining the halves??

Skull,

Each half is laid up seperately, and then placed into a vacumn bag under 21-25" of pressure, sucking everything down into the mold.

After that is dried, the internals are added, and a bead of spooge is laid around the mold edges and on top of the spars, wing blocks, etc... The molds are then put together and clamped or bolted together untill dry.

After that is dried, the molds are popped free and it time to clean up the edges, cut the ailerons free, and drill your wing hold down holes.

interesting...any idea why? Is it moisture related?

No, not at all. I had read here. there or somewhere that you should let the wax "harden" or "set" for at least 24 hours before working with the mold. I don't know how much it really matters, but I figured, hey, what can it hurt. I'm practicing may patience anyway. As it stands, I have two coats of PVA already in the molds. I'll do 1 more this evening when I get home. Hopefully I'll be able to start layup tonight, and have some nifty results tomorrow!

Question though, I can't seem to find the threads on this, but I remember that there is an adopted plan for the number of layers and weights for each when doing layups. I think it went something like:

4 Layers of cloth as follows:
2 layers of 2 oz/in followed by
2 layers of 4 oz/in

Does that sound familiar anyone.

Dave,

Hopefully I've got the right person. I haven't forgotten your Redskins stuff! Hopefully I'll remember to bring it to you at Toledo this year.

OK, having a Sr. Moment here. Maybe it was someone named Darrell, or Darnell I met at Toledo the last two years that was a big Redskins fan. Sheesh! Someone pass me my Ginko! Quick!

Skull,

I'll take some pictures next time I lay one up (before the end of February).

Spooge is a mixture of laminating resin, micro balloons, and Colidial Silica (cab-o-sil). I kinda like your def. though

I did two wings in December, three more to go this winter.

Ahh, the good ole Urban Dictionary! Spooge is nothing compared to other stuff on that site. One of my favorites, Donkey Punch.

PM me if you want more terms to look up.

I know, I know, I need help.

OK Sports fans. Here are the fruits of my labor. My very first layup went extremely well!!! I applied 10 coats of wax to the molds, followed by 3 coats of PVA and 2 more coats of wax on top of the PVA. Overkill? Maybe, but the way the parts released was beautiful.
