New Day, New Beginning. I got my nerve up again - yes, finally again - and I took the Belt out for another crash 'em smash 'em ordeal. Only this time I messed with some of the knobs on the Tx. The left one is the pitch curve and it does make a difference. The Belt will lift at a somewhat lower rpm, but it's still a handful for me, being quite new at this and all. Then I tried the right knob - the throttle curve. That's NEAT! By balancing the two knobs I can actually get the heli to come off the ground gracefully very much like the Falcon. The head speed is far lower than the standard pitch / rpm knobs at "zero -zero" flight. With the lower head speed the controls are far quicker to respond. I suppose that I am doing the same thing you fancy Tx guys are doing, but I don't have ability to reshape the curves. But I can set my position on the curves and that is a HUGE advantage over a lesser Tx. I am not going to run the heli at the lowest possible rpm, but I am dialing it down from 'Insane' to just below 'Nutz'. I'd like to think that I am better than 'Docile'. Time will tell. And I've already smushed it twice on 'Insane' so I know that doesn't work for me. Anyhow I still don't have enough room to fly a heli in this size class. That forces me to stay honest. When I was starting with the Falcon it seemed that I need as much room as I had. I could hover in the living room, but when I moved outdoors, I needed all of the patio. And out front I 'needed' all of the front yard. So if I restrict my space, I force good flight control. I did finally get the heli up and into a good hover. I managed to back it under the picnic table with all of that horrible metal structure and it scared the sweat out of me! I kept my cool and worked it out from under the table with no issues. I did finally get the heli up to the four foot level where the air is less hostile and it smoothed out. I have already shortened the swash links. I have no need for negative pitch, so I'm down to about 3° at minimum throttle. Of course the pitch curve pot lets me change that from the Tx but I wanted the mechanical change so I wasn't 'landing' with negative pitch. That's really hard on blades and stuff. I felt like I was out for a long time - but time slows down when you are in a panic situation, so in reality it was just a few minutes. And it felt good. And I do understand why you guys are spending the money on the upgraded Tx. I could fly this bird today if I was handed a DX series Tx with the numbers all dialed in for me. But that's OK. I will also be able to fly this bird with the stock Tx given s |
