Mark,

I fly a Hobbyzone Super CUB with a 8.4V 1000mAh battery. It does pretty good without wind, but seems underpowered upwind. I think the four channel airplanes on the sim are easier to fly than my 3 channel. Good to hear other people are flying airplanes too.

Gene,

It looks like the Taylorcraft 450 will be a good airplane. You should have a lot of fun with that.

Nick

Stump, nothing to worry about I too spend alot of time in the backyard hovering! I am hoping to make some kind of breakthrough soon with my nose/side in hovering myself! The slow FF is getting better but not making any complete circuits just yet.(sigh) I am actually using the Copter X head and tail on my Trex 450 it was my 450XL until I upgraded it with a SE frame. Depending on where the B400 antirotation bracket it is a cheap aluminum upgrade, It would need to be on the backside of the swash and I can't remember where the 400's is. But then it will look more Trexish than 400!

Mark, I realized the Lil Sig Rascal was way overpowered it comes with a stock 280 brushed motor with a 2:1 gearbox. It came to me with a 370 5400KV inrunner with the same 2:1 gearbox. I quickly realized after handlaunching it that it had way more power than I could handle! add to that a 11.1V 1000 mah Lipo. Ouch way too responsive to rudder and elevator inputs. I had the rudder set up on my TX as the Aerilons so I would not pick up the bad habit of always turning with the rudder on the TX. I think I will either get another Lil Rascal since I now have spare parts! lol or pick up either the super Decathlon or J3 Cub and practice flying them a bit before I get the other 2 planes put together! The Sig Kadet 42-EP looks tempting too! I now have 3 Park 370 brushless inrunners! Need to find a foamie or something that I can put one in! Planes are cool but no substitute for my Helo's! n Oh and using a 7.2V 2S 1300 pack would give you less RPMs due to the lack of 1.2volts coming off the battery though you would get more flight time. Maybe a 3s 11.1V 1000 or so would give you more power.
Sorry to talk about planes here guys but heh I am still struggling with the single rotor! The planes are just a pleasant diversion!

Max - You scored dude! When I was 28 I had been married for three years already. My wife (still my wife) use to come to the pattern competitions and watch me fly my planes before we married. Then the kids, mortgage, cars, etc. etc, and RC went away for a while If you are lucky, your wife will support your hobbies like mine always has. If not, well, good luck

Anymore 3D (on purpose) happening with your B400 since you got it rebuilt?

Mark - You have mail. Can't wait to see the next version of your Falcon!

Did you get your Esky 6-channel to run with your sim? I have one ordered that I got dirt cheap just to practice 3D in the sim.

Gene - Sorry to hear about your plane crash! One time I built a .40 powered scratch built pattern plane. She was a yellow and black beauty with an expansion chamber running down the side of the fuselage. Took me months to build. On the 3rd flight I hit another plane in mid-air and sheared the wings off both the planes. My new plane was so destroyed it was not repairable

Shane - It's kind a funny, you can almost tell who is broken down waiting on parts by their activity in this thread

Does that CopterX run a 150T main gear? If so, what pinion you using with that 3500KV motor?

Kenn - Keep those great photos coming of you and your fellow soldiers with the helis! Have a good week, and stay safe!

That little Sig Rascal is expensive. Btw I did not sell my bike, I still ride it, just not as much anymore. Taking my MR2 to a track day at Mid-Ohio in July, excited about that.

Went to the heli field today. It was really windy with 15+ mph winds. I sat around and watched the other guys fly. One guy had a Trex600 electric, the battery was a 22V 5,000mAh battery that cost $300!!! It was really neat to watch that fly.
I did my first auto rotation by accident. I was on my second battery pack and the wind had died down a little. The tail was all over the place, but I flew anyway. Today I was just hovering and doing some FF, no crazy stuff as I just spent $100 and 15 hours rebuilding it. All of a sudden at 30-40 feet up I hear a "zszszszszszzzzzzzz" sound and the heli starts to drop! I slam it into full negative as she falls and about 5 feet up give it full positive. It did not seem to do much and the heli landed skids down and bounced. What happened was the bolts that hold the motor on had some old lock tight on them that I did not remove, so the bolts felt tight, but were not tight enough and the motor moved away from the main gear just a smige and stripped it. Nothing else broke and I was back in the air in 5 minutes! I was so impressed, felt like I was flying a FP machine again. Got the rudder squared away and did some more hovering before I left. Over all a great day, bird came back in one piece, and I learned a bunch.
There was a new guy there, older, has flown airplanes for 10 years and was out with a blinged out Trex 450 with training gear. It was his first time up. He did ok and did not crash, has about 15 hours on the sim he said. Reminded me of my struggles 3 months ago.

RMG, yes 150 tooth, running an 11 tooth pinion. I borrowed a bat from Greg and got a hover in with the 450 this afternoon. Man I love that machine. I'm thinking does anyone want a King with Bling? I'm super tempted to ditch the king and do another CX450. Use one as a beater and the other as a hover queen.

>> I have several packs to play with. They are still NiMH but I do have some variables. I have one of 8.4 v 10c pack, two 9.6v 850mah and a 9.6v 1000mah pack. I was thinking that I could get away with the 7.4v lipo in the plane because we do that all the time with single rotors. Most of the fp helis come with a NiMH pack of 8.4 volts. We fly them with 7.4 LiPO packs and they work fine (I think it's a weight thing). With the weight drop from 99g to 46g I might be OK?? Can't hurt to try it. If it doesn't like the Lipo due to low voltage, it might be really happy with the 9.6 volt packs. They weigh exactly the same as the stock pack.
Taylor Craft 450. My friend has one - TaylorCraft, the real deal - and he let me fly it once. It was an experiment. He wondered just how real the Microsoft Flight Sim experience is and he knew that I have had countless hours on that simulator, but zero time on a real plane. I was flying and he was turned around sideways with his feet out the window. He couldn't have saved our bacon if I screwed up. His advice to me when I took control was quite simple. Don't crash.

RMG2;
>> I never did get the 6 channel to run the sim. I got an Esky sim controller and after I remove the springs and stuff so it 'feels' right, I'll be set. I don't have an idle up switch on the Tx but I programmed my F1 / F2 keys as ON and OFF for idle up. Not authentic, but I don't plan to be upside down for a loooooong time. And if I do get upside down, the authenticity of the switch won't be the deciding factor in my problem management model.

Gene;
>> From the literature on-line I thought the Sig came with a 400 motor from the factory?? I just read that today. I know I could use more oomph at times and perhaps the 9.6v packs will handle that. I really don't want to burn it up, but I'll give it a go.

And about the planks on the single rotor thread. My plane only has one rotor - it just sits vertical! If the rest of you guys will forgive us, we'll keep it minimal. On that subject (sort of) If you took the fuselage and wheels from the Sig and removed the wings and added a free wheeling fixed pitch rotor in place of the wing, you'd have a gyro copter thing. Maybe. If you have all that power, the free-wheeling rotor might help dissipate the power and make a cool toy. And elevator / rudder would work fine to control it. There, now we are back on helicopters again. Sort of. You'd be in auto gyro all the time. How cool is that?

Max;
>> Pretty lady. When I was 38 I set out for a new life with a new wife. After 19 years with #1 we decided that we had gotten too different. So I hooked up with a 24 year old gal driving a Buick Grand National and she always brought me lunch when I was at autocrosses. The guys loved her crop tops, mini skirts and heels. And of course that black GN was just killer. They figured I was just a cradle robbing idiot, but now 20 years later it's still working just fine. She liked my Harleys, loved the Valkyrie and tolerates the ST1300, she understands my helicopters, and she'll be my retirement provider when I'm done working. We think a lot alike. She's not into fluff - she's very grounded.
At 28 you two are mature enough to know what makes it all work. Take good care of each other and have a great future!

Thanks for the kind words Mark. Means a lot, which is weird since this is an internet forum, but over the past 6 months I feel that we have really gotten to know each other quiet well. Some of the guys at the flying field are dicks and a few are great guys. Some are willing to help me out and ask me questions, others do not seem interested at all in the fact that I am there. It would be nice to have a place where we could all meet up and fly together, but that will not happen due to our distances. UTM, you though you joined too late at page #50! HAHA, still working on that virtual beer for everyone!

Mark,

That would have been a cool experience in the TaylorCraft. I am still waiting to fly in a plane that my mom's friend owns.

Still working on it. The carbonation is the hard part. Just dosen't have the pop in the virtual world

I hope you guys don't mind if I vent a little. We had some really serious storms down in central Indy over the weekend but last night turned out beautiful. My family and I were returning from a dinner out with friends and as I was heading home I was noticing that every flag I was seeing was hanging slack. I mean even the little nylon flags at a sales model down the street from me were still and they are never still. So I got the kids in bed and then took off down the street Falcon in tow to a small church which has about 2 acres worth of field behind. I put her into a hover near my truck for a few just to get in the swing and then motored off for some FF. Some slow passes were pretty good and then I put the pedel down for some fast action and kablowie crash on the first pass. Got her back to the truck made a few adjustments and went again took it down range and turned, applied F cyclic and going to the other end and turned and bam crash again. Adjust, crash, adjust, crash, adjust, crash this went on for a good hour until I finally broke the tail boom and was actually happy so I could go home. I am always so quick to blame the wind blowing my tail out or some other thing but really I just am NOT a good pilot. If all there was to it is hovering I could probably win the olympic event but that's not all. FF is just killing me right now. I think last night was the first time I have been really frustrated with my learning curve. I have heard many people say that FF is easy compared to hovering but I am just not having that sort of experience. I hover just fine and every time I go outside it ends in some crash that requires repairs. I guess the only reason I get frustrated is because I have had some glimpses of success with it and have flown some battery packs out without incident. Actually I think that my FF is getting worse instead of better. My first attempts went surprisingly well and now I can't seem to get any sort of actual flight going at all. I got her home and started to fix it and all of these justifications started popping up like the battery tray was a bit loose and maybe the batt was sliding around causing my control losses, or the CPP motor is just not doing it for me and the lack of power is causing me issues, etc..etc... In the end I let all that go and just admitted to myself that I need much more practice before I can call myself a pilot. So I am bumping myself down a rank in my own mind to Newb and taking my licks. I will not let this get me down for long and I will most certainly be out there the next time I have a calm night but I have a long way to go! After last nights woeful preformance I think that it may be longer than I had planned before I get a CP. I can't justify the expense until I can at least feel confident that some basic FF will not be a problem. The FP is just fine for hover training and I don't need a $500+ bird for that.

I fixed the tail section last night and then in test flight noticed a broken rotor core so I will be putting the head back together tonight for some more practice. One day I'll be there. Until then I am one hovering fool!

Well thanks for reading my bitter monologue. I hope that some or all of you can relate. If not take this as a temporary setback in Uri's heli adventure.

Have a great day all!

UTM I'm right there with you, and I mean I'm exactly in the same horrible position. Every time I put one of my birds into FF flight dollar bills escape my wallet. I'm spending countless hours on the sim and just can't seem to get it. My flying partner Gpach is getting stall turns down and even has some successful loops completed. We started flying about the same time. From what I have read here and numerous other forums it just comes one day. Not unlike how one day you couldn't hold a hover and the next you could. I sure wish that revelation would happen sooner than later, I'm feeling a little left behind all of a sudden. Talking with Gpach this weekend I did have a bit of an insight into my own abilities. Over the course of the long winter I was hovering a minimum of 3 packs a night in the front room. Holding the #4 in a 4x4 box, playing with tail in and side in hovers. I could hold the bird motionless for minutes at a time, then this spring when the weather allowed me outdoor flight I had some real success with ff flight. Then all of a sudden I forgot how to ride the bike. What was so different that a person would lose a skill set seemingly overnight, well one thing I certainly haven't been hovering at all. I've spent alot of time on my two CP machines trying to master them. As I posted several pages back, I too am going to regress to newbie stage and just start hovering pack after pack, get my orientation down and work slow 8's and what not in the sim until perfected. Once I have that skill set embedded in my thick noggin I'll take the good old #4 out and see if I can fly it. Then once I have the #4 in controlled forward flight I'll actually attempt it with the CP machines. Bouncing the #4 off my own leg and breaking a blade was quite the reality check for me. I really thought I had a handle on the basics of forward flight....man was I wrong. So don't despair, I'm right beside you with the struggle! Just wish we could struggle together in person, too bad it's such a long drive from Calgary.
