If ya leave out the Mumbo-Jumbo and ignore the smoke, what else is there?

Question- when the oil is gone, what are these helicopters gonna be made of? (No, not smoke and mumbo-jumbo)

I have on of those! It's a propeller on a stick. Auto gyros nice, but a real pain to control.

Yep - the old friction start models - spin 'em up, let 'em go. You can even aim them in a general direction - cheap fun!

Well, I balanced my woody blades that came with the HBK2. Let me tell you how much tape it took to balance them.
I used Finless' (HeliFreak) blade balance video. I started off by marking a common 'registration mark' (A mark that is exactly the same distance from the mounting holes). Then I checked the CG of each blade - they were matched very well; needed no tape. Put them together on the balancer, one is obviously WAY heavy. I start putting tape on the CG marks, and I check them. More tape, another check. More tape, another check.

Long story short, here's a couple photos of the tape & blade.
NOTE: They are VERY well balanced now, and they fly very well also. Just look at the amount of tape :P

Mark, ROFLMAO!!! I would love to trade for the Ferrari, but I have a bum leg and would not be able to drive it. Michael is getting my order together now for the HDX, matter of fact I just got a PM from him, he has a few more parts to research for me then we should be good to go. I have already told him to add an Iraq Fund Donation to the order.

Bones, I feel your pain with the bum leg No..., really I do, as I have had a total of six knee surgeries myself Four on the right leg going all the way back to high school football days, and two more recently on the left leg (6-years ago) when I crashed hard on a dirt bike (age 45 at the time)

I got dead guy parts in my left leg, can you top that I think the correct terminology is, donor grafts but I like to say, "dead guy parts" I had 14-Ti screws and a weird shaped plate holding all the many pieces of my shatterd bone at the knee joint together, but they took that all out when they installed the dead guy parts Seriously, almost lost my leg to amputation because of surgical complications

Should not have tried to go back to the sport of motocross and race in the 40+ class at age 45 On the plus side I started into RC nitro offroad truck racing just as soon as could walk again! That was three years of fun and travel to races around the country in the RC Pro Offroad Series!

And now, some how I have landed here with you guys and RC helis??? At least this hobby should not damage my knees (knock on wood)

What kind of work did you have done on your knee?

Where is Max? Is he gone on vacation with that "hot" girl friend? Least he could have told his "family" he was leaving us for awhile

Solo, perhaps we should have given Max the Slo-Max stickers to put on his heli and slowed that wildman down a little! His pocket book would have thanked us

@RMG2 Perfect, that's just the info I was looking for. I used a press on pinion gear last time out, no heat sink and I did not remove the sticker so I'll try all that this time. I did run the motor off a AA until the battery was out of juice to break it in, so I'll do that again this time out. I like the idea of using a pinion with a set screw as that should ensure that there's no undo stress on the brushes.

Thanks for the quick response and the info!

Broggyr, Damn dude, it looks like you broke the blade in half and tried to tape it back together. At least they fly well.

RMG, you got me beat by a mile, but I do have dead people parts in my right knee. The doc did a complete ACL replacement. When they put the staples in I think they gathered up to much skin in them, every time I try to move my leg it feels like the staples are going to rip out. Oh and I did this playing Ultimate Frisbee at age 43. I did the MCL back in 2001 playing Whiffle Ball. I was coaching the Senior Baseball team and we were at the State Playoffs and playing Whiffle Ball in the Hotel Court Yard, Lessen learned, don't play Whiffle Ball with teenagers. My son also broke his finger in the same game and he was my left handed pitcher for the next days game. Enough rambling, sorry.

I'm glad you landed here with us. As far as being a safe sport, I don't no about that. I almost clipped the wife with the Falcon 40 when I first got it, if I had hit her with it I probably would have had more than a torn ACL when she was finished.

Yea, it's a LOT of tape. Rest assured the blade is in one piece, but my guess is the wood density between the two are wildly different...

Heya all, I know I have been somewhat of a lurker in this thread of late but I just got back from the flying field about 30 minutes ago and had to say something! Lately I have been getting somewhat frustrated with my flying progress hence my getting into electric planes for a bit of instant flying gratification. I went out to my flying field this morning a bit later than usual as I try to get out there by 7:00 am as there is not wind to compete against. I wound up getting out there at almost 8:00 am and it was a bit windy. I thought it was going to be a bad day after I realized that I left my Supercub stock transmitter at home(Sigh) It was probably too windy for it anyway I would say the wind was about 10 mph at the field and while I usually don't like to fly in wind I decided I would give it a shot. I took out my recently crashed Sea Fury 400 and put it up first and after a successful maiden flight I landed it in a 3 point stall as I could barely move forward into the wind toward the end of the battery timer, even with the tips of the wings sheared off from it's intial attempt at flight it flew fine after some trim to level the wings. I then took out the helos my T-Rex SE and 450SA. I spent the first 4 packs just working on tail in, side in, and nose in hovering. I noticed the helos would tend to vane with the wind. Also noticed as I did any fast acceleration the nose tended to turn left no problem I just compensated for it with the rudder. I was scooting both helos all over in my various orientations. My last two packs (I alternate my Helos) Without even realizing it I was doing figure eights not perfect mind you but recognizable as figure 8s, While my previous attempts at forward flight usually ended up in a crash this time I got away with only a very minor tip over resulting in a broken plastic blade grip on my SA. I throttled down instead of throttling up like I had been doing but did manage to keep the helo fairly level upon landing. I did that on a forward orientation as my others are now muscle memory and I am only having to think with my forward orientation and then mostly forward to back. Today after two packs in forward flight really renewed my faith in learning to fly these things with this small breakthrough. Topping today off was the fact that I was probably more calm on the sticks than I have ever been. Hmmm Zen and the art of flying R/C Helo's! Anywho I am just stoked at this breakthrough and look forward to future flights instead of almost dreading it! lol Thanks all for posting all your own ups and downs it helps to keep me motivated! Well later all off to the mall my son has his first job interview at Best Buy!
