Just ordered the plans and would really like to see one and speak to someone about this aircraft. (DF powered) I'll be @ the Austin jet rally (as a spectator) this weekend. If we should meet remember to speak slowly, I fly down is South Austin.

Hank, i am finishing up on mine, its beautiful. The plans are great, and the buildup is good. The planking of the fuse sucks, but oh well, im way past that part. I am putting a p-80 in miine, so there are alot of parts that took more reinforcing than for fdf power. I have heard it flies good on df, i just cant come to see a 20 + pound airplane flying "good" on a fan. I fabricated everything myself including tiptanks, doors, ss exhaust, and now working on a scale cockpit. See my post "panther progress" for updates, and pix. nick

Hank,
I'll be at the Austin meet Saturday. If you'd like, I'll bring my OLD Ziroli Panther for you to look at.

I've flown it for the last 7 or 8 years with assorted ducted fan configurations, and am about to start another for JetCat P120 power.

Johnny

pantherflyr: I've looked @ your thread, very impressive. Are the tip tanks you made build-up or molded? I've been looking at pictures of the full scale cockpits (and, canopies) of the F8F and the F9F and they look pretty close. I saw someone had a cockpit for the F8F around the same scale but can find it now.

Johnny: I'd hate for you to drag it down here just for me, but it would be cool to see it. What other jets are you bringing so I will be able to find you? I'd like to pick you brain about fan types.

Thanks for you help guys!

Hank,

Century Jets (http://www.centuryjet.com/) sells a cockpit, retracts, and accessories for their Cougar which is almost exactly the same size as the Ziroli Panther. If you are going to build the Ziroli Panther from his plans, I would use his canopy, tip tanks, and ducting - it will save you some work.

Hank,
I'm not bringing anything to fly. Just spectating, so it wont be any problem to bring it. Look for an old, grey haired, fat guy wearing a RAM hat. I'll probably get to the field around 10:00 am Saturday.

Klenker,
I agree about the canopy & ducting supplied by Ziroli, but the tip tanks he supplied just about whipped my butt. Guess I need someone to show me how to work with ABS. I started out (after the ABS tanks) with white styrofoam, fiberglassed with about 2 oz cloth. They were fine until the first time the airplane sat out in the Texas sun for awhile. Apparently, the heat caused the styrofoam to "gas" causing fairly big bubbles to appear. I later stacked a bunch of balsa together and turned some out on a wood lathe. They worked out well, but were quite expensive. I also carved the nose piece out of balsa.

BTW Bob, I callled Lazer Works Friday and asked about their 110% Ziroli kit. The guy I talked to didn't seem too knowlegable about the stuff Jessie had been involved with. I sent an Email asking for prices (short kit, full kit) but haven't received a reply.
Any suggestions?
Johnny

You mentioned Lazer Works but Jesse has his own gig now called Laser Lizard in Chico, TX, and he does know his stuff. He can be reached at laserlizard.com

He has cut two kits for me, one when he was with lazer works and one with his new company. Both were of excellent quality and were reasonably priced. I will definitely do business with him again.

Johnny,

See the other thread about Lazer Works. Apparently, Jesse is working at a new place: http://www.laserlizard.com

I'd talk to him there. With the plans digitized, scaling them up to 110% to cut the bigger parts takes about 30 seconds. That's what he did for me.

There was a guy at Best in the West all the way back in '96--I think his name was Jim Crane--who had a Ziroli F9F powered by a Ramtec & OS .91. I remember being blown away by this airplane. For being so large it flew very well on this power plant, which is what surprised me. Plenty of static and dynamic thrust. It did about 140 at top speed, and was capable of respectable loops. With all that wing area, it slowed down for landing nicely.

The airplane flew as if it was light. The flying characteristics that I saw would lend it to being a good DF trainer, although the all-wood construction looked like a pain in the neck.

Absolutely correct. That F9F belonged to Jim Crane and it is still around. He was a meticulous builder and used a lot of innovative ideas that sometimes looked strange but worked perfectly. Unfortunately Jim succumbed to cancer about a year and a half ago. We lost a great jet pilot.
Chuck Bower of Whidbey Island has also built the F9F and first put a Rossi 1.05 and Ramtec fan and then converted it to RAM 750. His homemade conversion was perfect and it was the most realistic scale flying model I have seen in quite awhile. It had plenty of power for takeoff and Chuck could fly the F9F perfectly. He has another on the building board and will probably put a RAM 500 in it.
