maybe you have the motor to tight against the main gear. I've seen where it's so tight, that it doesn't turn... and so loose that it doesn't touch. You have to get that perfect fit. When the truck is fitted right with the motor, you should be able to hold the truck in the air, run your finger along the main gear and turn the wheels. If it is hard, separate the two a bit more until it is just right. Let me know if this helps

it's only hard when it's on the ground like you said to do in previous post. It's not 'hard' to turn but it is wanting to move the truck forward and backward. it's not to hard and not too easy to turn.
I knew about the clearence already. When I put my new motor in I made sure to line it up perfectly. It's got a little tiny gap between the gears, probably few pieces of paper worth.. i'd say 2 or 3. The gear from the motor, i think it's called the pinion?, isn't touching the big gear(spur?) but it is pretty close to touching. If I hold it in the air and do it it spins freely. It's got just a slight bit of resistance on it. I can't flick my finger and have all tires freewheel if thats what you mean.

Would having it too close make the motor heat up like it did? I haven't turned the truck on since the other day when a little smoke was coming out of the motor. It was REALLY hot. I was thinking it may have been because I didn't 'break in' the motor. It's not a modifiable motor. I stuck it in the truck, and went slowly for 5 or so minutes putting around over easy terrain, then I goosed it gradually increasing my throttle a little each drive by(I did this on pavement).

well it sounds like everything is installed right. Thats about how much space I have between mine too. Is your motor a double wind? Is it possible to take a picture of your pinion and motor and post it? Just want to see what the pinion looks like. Is it gold and really small?

well I don't know what to think now??? I'm running the exact same pinion with my 17d Venom Fireball and it is sweet! I have the heat sink on and it doesn't get hot barely at all. Hmmmm...

It doesn't spin absolutely freely. You have to use just a little pressure to turn it.

if its "more" than average, then something is binding somewhere.

If the wheels don't spin freely, check the slipper.

I finally got my digital camera back from a friend. I took a few shots of the gear and it's gap. I hope you can tell from these pics if it's too close or just right. I've included 2 of them so I apologize to any dial up users out there. I did notice my small gold gear(I keep forgetting which it is) was a little too close to the motor. It may have been rubbing against it causing friction. I've adjusted it since then and ran it around for 2 minutes and brought it back to me to feel the engine. It was a little warm but not hot so I kept going. I went through roughly 3/4 of the battery doing full sprints and just general driving around. I brought the truck back to me and felt the motor again and it was a bit hot, but certainly not as hot as the first day I put it in. I let it cool down 30 mins before shooting the video and pics you see. Sure wish I could tell how hot hot needs to be before being the bad kinda hot.

I also was playing around with the digicam and mounted it (sorta) to the truck and road around the yard a little bit. While playing back the movie I noticed it was clicking. Not sure what it could be but it's a very small video I uploaded to youtube. Don't know what the policy is for posting outside links but here is the link for that video on Youtube

Any other ideas on why my motor is smoking after 3/4 - full battery's worth of driving around? There is that clicking noise. I noticed, I shot video too, that my ESC has a green light when it's just on. When I hit the throttle, the green light will go away. When/If I use full throttle, a red light appears on it, ONLY under full throttle. I play with the trim a bit while it's full throttle(on the work bench) and the red light disappears at full throttle but a whining noise comes from the ESC. It's a dynamite 12T ESC. I'm just tossing ideas out there now.

If u really wanted to you could spend $80 on a brushless Esc and motor from www.exceedrc.com.
