Hey OldScalGuy, glad I could help you land a Pawnee. (No Punn intended)! Mike said he has already had a couple of guys come into his shop looking for one since he sent yours. Our club had our annual Mall show last weekend and my Pawnee was the talk of everyone. All my fellow club members were drueling over it. Let us know when you get it going.

Good one there travdad. I did take some time away from my major scale project and worked on the Pawnee a while. Very nice kit. Still kicking around what to power it with.

I tend to agree that even though they say it is a 40 size plane, 9.5 lbs is a lot for a 72 or 82 4 stroke. I am at the point where I have to make a desicison as far as what to power it with. I was thinking on using a 91 Magnum 4 stoke, however I am not sure if it will fit in the motor mount supplied. It will be a real pain if I have to rework the firewall to except a different motor mount. Has anyone used anything larger than a 82 4 stoke?
Also, has anyone flown this plane with a 72 or 82?

I'm going to give it a try with my Saito .72. I have a .91 as well, but I would have to redo the entire front end to make it work. If the .72 won't fly it to my satisfaction, then I figure I can redo everything at that time and go with the .91. I'm sure Hangar-9 has done their homework on the power requirements, so it should be fine.

I started to thrash the Pawnee with a Saito 90 twin but gave it up for a later time. I made a mount to use the stock motor box without modifactions, and even marked the cowl to cut. Had everything in place then started to weigh out the counter balance.4 sub C batteries and 9 ounces of lead in the tail section wasnt worth the work. Stuffed a OS 70 4 stroke in and mounted a 2000ma battery under the seat for balance A 1"X2" cut in the cowl for the rocker box and its ready to go! The 90 twin is plan "B" if the 70 wont work

Has any one ran across a full size Pawnee that has similar color and markings? It is looking more like putting an O.S. .61 in mine, it will fit cowled in if I rotate it approx. 45 degrees to inverted. Working out the muffler is the biggest problem that i see with it so far.

The N#'s (N223MA) are from a poor derelict C-130 thats been in Luanda, Angola since 1994 Belonged to the United Nations for the World Food Program! Going to peel mine off and replace them with one from a glider tug thats being used at our local airport!

OldscaleGuy - Of all the pictures that I've been able to find, I've yet to see this color scheme. This is not the first H9 plane that uses the same colors. After I get tired of the current scheme, I plan to convert mine to a more factory one or one that will help out for visibily. After flying mine for the first time this past weekend, it disappers pretty fast in a cloudy sky. I might have to go to a Cub yellow or maybe a red. There are a lot of schemes out there after the real planes get recovered and repainted. My better half likes the current look, but we'll see what happens.

Thanks fella's. I really like the current scheme too, but have not flown it yet, that might change my mind. Yellow is one of the easiest colors to see, C-FAVL would be a great option. I like the lightening bolt. In years past i added a lightening bolt to all my sport models.

Ok gang,
I think I have decided against
shoe horning my OS 91 4S, due
to balance & cowl clearance.

Anyone who has flown your Pawnee
yet, what engines have been used?
And please note if you had CG issues
with that engine.

I really didn't want to buy a new engine
for this plane, but I looked at an OS FS-70
today at my LHS. He's selling it at $209.

I really don't want a rocket. That's not
what this plane is all about.

Thanks in advance!

Johnny C!

Edited to note. I just read the last page again
and seems that lot of us are questioning the
larger engines. But I would still like to have
flight reports on these engines. Later!

The spray bars are a nice addition. What are your thoughts on the flying characteristics? What motor are you using?

No they are not yet. This plane flys alot like a cub. I put a evilution 46 in it, it is plenty of power for scale flying. It weights 8 1/2 lbs. Awsome plane, can't wait to put some more flights on it.

mnoodle -Looks really good. Thanks for taking some additional pics for me. Looks like it could be functional in an hour of work or so. Please keep me informed. I have been thinking about how to rig a smoke system up, you might have just provided the key!

mnoodle - did you attach the supports to the ribs? If you did, you covered them up very nicely! I like the quality of the work.

bassfisher, thanks, and your right i did attach them to the ribs. I used epoxy and covered with monokote. There wasn't alot of clearence between the flap and hanger [ 1/8"]but it seems to work. I tried to hook it up to my exauhst . There was smoke comming out for a little bit, but to much back pressure. I'll try more holes and see if that works. Do you have any ideas? Hope the pic's help ,if not i'll take some more. I'm not sure if anyone else is using a 2stroke but mine was noseheavy with a 46. I put the battery behind the seat, added the spray bars and still put 2.25oz in the tail.

mnoodle - since I have not tried to set up a smoke system in any of my planes, all I can tell you is what I have read in other posts. 2 strokes do not put out good smoke, because from what I've read, the exhaust does not get hot enough for a long enough period in the muffler to get the smoke oil to temp. 4 strokes do a little better, but then I've read the sometimes you have to wrap copper tubing outside the motor to get the oil heated up. Gas engines do the best. I'm using a Mag. 80 4S in mine and put the battery pack in the far rear to balance. Go to the Search here on RCU, type in SMOKE SYSTEM and you;l see an article by Mike Buzzeo named GOT SMOKE. It's a pretty good starting point.
