I'm looking for a stable RC platform to use for taking quality videos/stills. I'm thinking about the DF SAVS but I see that a lot of people does not like it. I need something that can take some moderately gusty winds and be able to safely get up close. Also the noice should be minimal. The buget is <$4000 or so.

Thanks.

The reason people don't like the savs is because it is so expensive compaired to the DF 5 for little change ($1000 or so) in flight performance. But the camera is superior to the DF 5's so you might want to consider.

BTW, i've flown my DF in 30 mph winds, so you don't have to worry, it can take the wind if you can.

there is this though, It looks very expensive, but is worth checking out as it is an alternative.

Are you sure it was 30 mph winds? Did you actually measure the wind speed with an anonometer? I don't think a one pound helo could stand that much wind, especially at altitude.

Thanks for the info guys.
The $500 looks very impressive, the problem is that I dont really feel like being a test pilot, I'd rather get something RTF to get to work asap.

The two things that conserns me with the SAVS are the potential widn gust issues the the quality of the camera. The videos that I've seen on websites have all been compressed and at a 320x240 (or so) resolution. How does the videos show up on a regular tv? Are they just OK or are they commecially acceptable.

How does the SAVS perform in gusty winds? Does it remain stable enough to hover within 3-4 feet of an obstacle without danger of crashing?

The choice's I'm considering are either getting a SAVS or getting an electric $200 mini heli to learn on and then move to a t-rex 600.
(I used to work as a helicopter CFI so I know the physics behind rotorcrafts)

Any advice would be really appreciated. My main interest is to get good(commercial grade) video in low to moderately windy/gusty conditions.

Thanks,
Lars

It's hard to recommend the DF product at the moment, because the brushed motors are just plain behind the times. I can't believe they're still able to sell these...

There are better quadrocopters available, for the same or less money. The only one well over your $4k budget is the Microdrone. The SAVS camera isn't anything special either, though it might be about the best thing the SAVS can lift. A visit to RangeVideo will get you something better, for less money. There are many other choices that will open up if you get a brushless quad, so you can actually lift a real camera.

Gusty wind is a problem, and so is high wind. I can't say how they compare to conventional helis, because I have no experience with them.

Cheers,
Rusty (the UAVP guy)

Test from today, very little wind, flown via video goggles- http://www.radrotary.com/FPV_123107_raw.wmv

30 mph winds sounds a bit suspect, is'nt the top speed of SAVS around 20 mph?

Could someone please recommend a good (i.e. better than SAVS) RTF quadcopter for under 4K.

Thanks
Lars

RTF is the problem, if you want "factory built". I think the Mikrokopter might be available complete, but I'm not sure. A UAVP costs me about $800 total, before any sort of camera system. Unfortunately, there's plenty of assembly required.

Good luck,
Rusty

Well, no it wasn't at that high an altitude, probably around 40ft.

And also, no i didn't measure it, but i'm pretty sure some of the gusts were around 30 mph (they blew me). The sustained wind was around 5 mph or so.

Mike;
Sorry for being a bit lazy but... could you provide detailed plans/drawings or a kit for your design. If your design can really lift 1Kg and perform at moderate winds then I'm more than willing to pay for it.

Thanks,
Lars

Lars,

What the design can lift and the amount of payload you can safely fly are two different things. For example, I just posted in the Kquad Thread flying 5 lbs using more powerful motors. However the safe payload is only a few ounces more than the 1 lb payload of the original Kquad. I've never advocated flying in moderate winds.

As for detailed plans/drawings, what I have posted in the referenced thread is about the maximum detail that I care to do. There is really not much to it other than cutting and drilling some aluminum pieces available from local hardware stores. I think the pictures show enough detail for that.

Mike

Thanks Mike;
I'm seriously considering your design.

Best regards,
Lars
