I finally had the opportunity to get outside and fly today! This is my new modified HBFP with the following setup:

- Slo-Max 300 Main Motor w/10T Pinion and Heatsink
- GWS DD Tail Motor (CN12-RXC) - No Heatsink
- GWS Tail Rotor Housing and Vertical Fin
- GWS 4530 Tail Rotor Prop
- Super Skids
- Spektrum AR6100 Rx
- E-flite 3-in-1
- Esky 0704A HH Gyro
- Kyosho M24 Blades
- Commonsense RC 2S 800mAh 10C Lipo
- Esky Honey Bee King II Canopy
- Spektrum DX7 Tx

I put this bird together last night and conducted a couple of shakedown/hover flights in the basement about 1:00am this morning (I know...I'm really addicted ). My wife offered to video this flight, which I appreciated very much.

The weather conditions were not the greatest...cold, overcast, 31 F, with winds from my 2 o'clock position at up to 10 mph. My bare hands were absolutely freezing after this short 5 1/2 min. flight.

I hadn't flown outside since November 10. The only other flight since then was in a gymnasium a couple of weeks ago. I have been spending my regular time on Phoenix RC sim to stay somewhat sharp; however, I did feel I was just a little rusty and I did have a couple of near-misses during those those fast diving, high-banked downwind turns. Those will certainly keep you on the sticks! Overall, I was very satisified with how I flew today.

Nice video.

I just purchased an FP Honey Bee and can't wait to get started. I haven't ordered Lipo replacements yet as I wasn't sure if 800 or 1200 mAh was the way to go. I've seen both offered for the HB. Did you have to modify the battery cage and adjust the CG after going to Lipo batteries? Also, is the Slow-Max a brushless motor?

Thanks

(Will be spending some time learning how to hover first in the garage, but it will be nice to get it outside eventually.)

How did you know those parts would fit the Honey Bee FP? I went to the GWS web site and couldn't get anything useful out of it! You changed the tail rotor housing. How did you get the housing off the boom? Isn't it glued on? Why did you switch from a 4-in1 to a 3-in-1?

Awesome video. I really thought you were going to bite it that one time around, when it took that sudden dip toward the ground...lol. Flying like that is so far off in the future for me, I can't even think about it.

I knew the parts would fit the HBFP from information in the HBFP thread over at rcgroups.com. I purchased all of the GWS tail parts and the Slo-Max 300 motor at Tower Hobbies. See the following links:

GWS CN12-RXC Motor (1)/EP3020 Prop (2): http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0095p?FVPROFIL=&FVSEARCH=cn12-rxc
GWS EP3020 Tail Rotor Blade EDP-50/H: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHHE2&P=7
GWS Tail Rotor Housing & Vertical Fin: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHXK4&P=7
Team Orion Slo-Max Brushed 300 Motor: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=slo-max

Kyosho M24 blades were purchased here: http://www.ultimatehobbies.com/istar.asp?a=6&id=KYOCA1015!1012

The reason I use the 3-in-1 is because I installed a Spektrum AR6100 receiver that I fly with my Spektrum DX7 transmitter. The E-flite 3-in-1 does not have an internal receiver, but it does have the mixer, ESC and rate gyro (I override this with a separate E-Sky HH gyro).

Regarding removing the stock tail rotor housing...place the stock tail rotor housing in boiling water for approximately 3 min. and then twist gently to remove from the boom.

Thank you. Flying like that isn't necessarily so far off in the future. You'll ge there. It just takes a little time for things to "click." I've only been flying helis for 14 months. It took me about three months to nail down hovering in all orientations, including nose-in. It took me another 4 months to nail down forward flight (figure 8s, circuits, etc.).

Recently, I just moved up to a Honey Bee King II. The HBK2 is my first CP heli. I'm having a great time with the HBK2. Though, I did crash the HBK2 on its maiden flight a few days ago. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjRzPLEsy7k . It happens and I'm sure it won't be my last crash either. I'll just pay much more attention to the orientation of the heli when flying in those overcast sky conditions. I just got a little too comfortable in those difficult visual flying conditions and well....you see what happened.

The single most important thing that has helped me the most is many, many hours on Phoenix RC simulator. If you can afford it, I would recommend the purchase of one of these high-end simulators like Phoenix RC, Real Flight G4, Aerofly Deluxe or Reflex XTR. There is alot of debate about which of these is the best, but to be honest, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these high-end sims. Though I will say that these high-end sims are WAY better than FMS or even Clear View. There is no comparison.

Hello,

I'm also having the HBFP, now I'm getting good in hovering, also flaying, so I'm thinking of some upgrades... Upgrading to Slo-Max 300 motor sounds as a good solution to me!

Racin06, please, was there any additional modification necessary in order to get Slo-Max installed (I'm currently using stock setup)?

thanks!

/Denis

Hello Denis,

The Slo-Max 300 is a direct drop into the HBFP frame. No modifications are needed.

Racin06,
I'm ready to order some parts for my HBFP.. following your list...
1. you listed 4530 for the tail prop. Is the EP3020 the same? 4530 is 114x76 mm (correct?)
2. Slo-max -- its the avoinics one right?... Tower hobby is out of stock. found one from another website but they list 2 one std and the other avionics.
3. Pinion gear for the slomax.. Does it come with it or do I have to order it. P/N?

My tail motor went out the other day and just spent 13.00 on an esky tail motor at the LHS -- couldn't wait for snail mail. I best order these parts now. I bet my main motor will give out as well.

James

The parts include a tail rotor housing, new motor, new stabilizer fin and rotor blades. Anybody got experience with the ducted fan I've seen? It eliminates some of the parts. Any issues? It's only a dollar more.

1. No, but the 4530 prop is listed as EP3020 on Tower Hobbies for some reason. The 3020s are actually the orange props that come with the GWS DD tail motor. Strange...

2. Yes, that's the Slo-Max 300.

3. The Slo-Max 300 does not come with a pinion. I've been using the 10T stock motor pinion on my Slo-Max 300. Some are using a 9T.

Great flying racin! Hopefully I will be able to get to that point... sometime!

Question for you... or anyone that can advise me.

I want to upgrade to a slo-max with M24 blades, but would rather not upgrade to LiPos yet. Do I absolutely need to in order to achieve decent flight times? I am still using the stock NiMH set up and would like to for a bit longer for a couple reasons.... cost being one and not blowing up my apartment if I crash is another

Also, what are the pros/cons between a 9T and 10T pinion?

Switch to Lipo. that was the first upgrade I did along with superskids. I used my Coaxial 800 10c lipos. You can pick up 800 to 1000 lipos cheap - between 10 to 20 bucks depending on name brand. Also you can pickup a cheap lipo charger for cheap as well (under 10 bucks).
You'll endup with a better, stronger and lighter battery if you go with lipo. You will need to move the battery to the front under the 4in1.

Yes, you should make the switch to lipos. I wouldn't worry about blowing up a lipo in a crash. I have crashed the HBFP many times and even from 60 ft. in the air and I have never damaged a lipo. Sure, it can happen, but as long as the lipo is secure, you should be OK.

I have used the 9T and 10T pinion and I went with the 10T because I really didn't see much of a difference in how much heat is generated by the Slo-max motor and the lipo. Using either pinion will still produce quite a bit of heat in the motor and lipo. I'd rather have a little more headspeed, which is why I went with the 10T.

3. The Slo-Max 300 does not come with a pinion. I've been using the 10T stock motor pinion on my Slo-Max 300. Some are using a 9T.

So stock motor pinion can be removed and used with Slo-Max 300 ?
Please tell how ?

Thank You.
