Made a bit more progress with the ailerons and wing sheeting. I'm very happy how this has come along so far.

Lol......

Here's one more shot of the CAP reunited with its many parts.....

I guess its getting pretty close now.........I'm finding I just have to be in the "right" mood to work on it.

Probably could have built a brand new one from scratch at the rate I'm going on this project.

I wondering how it was going, bout time we saw some progress glydrjocky

I have just started the rebuild of the extra should get the two halfs together tonight. Man is it light around those wings, but all in all not too bad a of a repair. One of the guys was flying with smoke the other day Looked awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen videos before but at the feild it was 10 times better. Now I have to work out how to install a smoke system.

Cap looks good, what colour scheme you going? What wing span is it and what size motor you powered with. .....cheers

Smoke would look awesome for sure. Looks like your coming along! I saw a full scale Extra 200 at the airport today and was amazed at its overall size!

The Cap 232 is a Great Planes .40 size I believe, not sure what the span is. I'm going back with the original Red and white wings and also replacing the Red and white on the fuselage was it was before.

It was powered by an OS FX .46 that powered it quite well. I hope I didnt get too heavy on the reabuild but not much extra wood was added. Most of the wing damage was just remove and replace with original parts.

I thought about putting an AX .55 in it but I'll see how it fly's before I get too carried away.

I'm going to have to add 1/32 balsa to both faces of the ailerons as the taper is a bit too thin to match the wing contour. I may cut a few lightening holes in the aileron stock then glue the balsa sheeting on. Should work out okay. Also need to add some plywood doubler bracing to the inside of the fuse where the wing attaches. Then I can cover it from there. I'm planning on just sectioning the covering into the existing areas as I dont really want to strip the whole thing down to bare wood if at all possible.

Keep up the good work!

T

Hey glydrjocky, I have a 55ax swinging a 12x8 on a 40 size sukhoi :same engine mount :no diff to the cg good motor!!!!!!!!!! Colours sound good you up to covering yet. Some pics when you get there.
I managed to save the top half of covering on the extra, meant the I only had to join around the cockpit. I didn't like the cockpit it was formed out of plastic and didn't sit very well, so I rebuilt it out of ply and balsa. Saving the covering meant I could keep all the graphics ... bonus !!!!!! Been on the move with this one rejoined, then sheeted in side with 3mm ply where it snapped so it won't break there again. They only had a ply former with a top and bottom and some mid sections spaced about 100mm apart. The minute any pressure was appllied it all let go. While I replaced the former and as I said sheeted in side with ply good and strong. Don't worry I just received a DL 50 I won on ebay ( brand new in the box ) So I think the 5.2 HP sould pull the 72" wing span around the sky with some authority. I had a 180 asp four up front before, it weighed 900grams and 550grams of lead bolted on. I hate dead weight, so they way I look at 1450grams trade 1500 and 5.2hp simple maths weight for power.
Got a wing incident metre the other day put it on and wings read perfect grate litlle device those.

The other toy I tried was a mono-coat smart stripe. It cost about $39 AUS, it was a while ago I have had it sitting on the self. It took about an hour to put together. The back is a thick pice of dowel about 40mm dia it takes the coverall and the front is a threaded rod to which the cutter moves sideways. The movement sideways determines the width of the stripe you want to cut from about 2mm upwards. : note when put the rod through, it is important that the frame ends that the thread go through are in perfect alignment, or the rod will bind and not move freely. Once it is set up it cuts a perfect stripe very quickly. The only down side is if you want a differant colour stirpe you have to reload the dowel so cut all the stripes you need before you change colour.

The other problem I came across was the fire wall had to be moved back 20mm to get the dl in. I thought about putting the carbie through the wall but two things 1. Not enough wall left 2. The muffler hit the bottom so it meant structal members being cut away. So the only option left move it back. Should have this done tonight then I can start fitting up the dl, try a preliminary cg to find out where every thing else is going to go.

Looking good! Sounds like you'll have more power than you will know what to do with!!! I better get cracking here, you are leaving me in the dust. I've been working on an Edge 540 Carl Goldberg ARF at the same time so its a matter of dividing my time that I dont seem to have enough of anyway.

No new pics of the Cap but I do have it inverted on my table with the wing ready to drill new wing dowels, just need a long 5/16 drill to make some fresh clean dowel holes through the bulkhead into the spar plates. I can reach it through the lightening hole below the firewall. I'll figure something out to take care of it. I also need to put plywood doublers down the insides of the fuselage where I but jointed it together initially. Once that is done I can start covering her up!

I truely miss that CAP 232 its just the perfect small acro platform. Looks great in the air with wicked flight characteristics.................which incidently is why I crashed it in the first place

hmmmm too many projects, I try and limit myself to one at a time finish what I am doing doesn't always work theory good
Once you got that fixing done then cover and put back together should fall together.
Whats going to power the Edge 540? what wingspan?
Should have props turning up today, man the aussie dollar at the moment costs $101 US that converts to $ 163AUD
Sucks better when the dollar sat around 90cents US. Tried to buy props local but the only one could find 22x8 APC $ 59 aussie mannnnnnnnnnnnnn
Trying to fit up the DL will post some pics when I get a change.
Cheers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Not to worry about the exchange rate, the economy is getting so bad that we can just start whittling our own props from blocks of scrap pine soon.

I'm going to have to replace the JR337 micro servos in the Cap wings with a bit more powerful metal gear Hitec 225MG servos. The 337's strip real easy and I've already striped a couple in my 4-star 40 when I belly landed after tearing the gear off. Now that i have the bigger ailerons I want more power to back them up.

The Edge 540 ARF is 67" span and going to get a Supertiger .91. not my first choice but the plane and engine came from my brother so I cant look a gift horse in the mouth. Should fly okay but may be a bit thirsty for fuel.

It was an awesome plane up lines like you wouldn't beleive. I think it went faster going verticle, it was the only place you would open full throthle.
Knife edge till the cows came home. The only thing needed was a bigger tank,  got 6 minutes flight. Can't say enough about the DL 50 beautiful motor spinnig a 20x10 prop. Very easy to start.

Hey glydrjocky hows the cap and Edge going ?

I recomend this combo if you are after a high proformance set up

Next chapter :  Leason learnt the hard way. I think the Battery moved, disconnected then no response  " F**k   F**k F**k " was heard from the flight line as it droped a wing from 40 ft above the deck went straight down ..............touched the deck ( thought it was saved ) tried to power up come round to get it down but flew off into the cow paddock next door went in at about 45 degrees this was the results. Saved the DL maybe two servos. Not gane to put the receiver in anything else yet. This was a sad day , held a minute of silance to mark it departure ..............RIP Extra 300
My partner took pitty on this one and it was replaced  with a mini craft Edge 540   77"wing span. Home of the DL now

The last shot is a simple way to transprot to the feild. It's 70x35 ( 3'x 1 1/2" ) pine with dowels drilled in. Space the dowels to suit then put rubber bands to hold the planes in place. The two frames are held on the deck of the ute by 3" battern screws. Can be removed with a battery drill when you are finished. Can work on alluminuim deck as well, only leaves four small holes when removed.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     UGH!!!!!!  I feel your pain!!!!!!!  Just lost a nitro helicopter to a battery problem myself.     Basman, I'm truly sorry to see that one go.  What a beautiful rebuild you did on her!    Glad you at least got photos of it before.  The after shots look like it absorbed alot of energy on impact.

Rest in Peace Ernie, up there in the big Muppet show in the sky!

Looks like a fine replacement aircraft you've got there though.    Still love that purple/lavender paint job on the Extra though.

The CAP 232 is still coming along between projects.  I've been working on the fuselage, feathering in some braces at the butt joints where the fuse broke so as not to add extra weight.    Seems to be working quite well.   The wing  is ready for covering and I rebuilt the servo mounts for the new Hitec 225's I"m using on the ailerons.

The Edge 540 is getting the finishing touches as well.   Getting ready to glue the canopy on and she'll be ready for a few break in tanks at the field.   I had hoped to get more done this weekend but manged to catch an aweful cold, that has slowed me down a bit.

Hope to have them both flying in the near future.  As these airplanes get bigger I'm finding a need to build a transport setup like you have there as well.

More to come...............

T

Still working away at the CAP 232 but managed to get the Carl Goldberg Edge 540 into the air this weekend.   Maiden flight was uneventful.    Recommended 13x6 breakin prop was way to under proped for flight,  especially with the Bissen Pitts muffler.    Put a Master Airscrew 14x6 on her and tried it again today with much better results.    Vertical performance was simply out of sight.    I do wish I had gone with 4 stroke power but you cant look a gift horse in the mouth.

Hey having a  go at this helli thing....................if you touch the ground it's over. Need bigger stock of replacement parts. I picked up a belt cp 450 size good starting platform. Seems a lot of concentration at early stages but thats the challange. Hey how about some progress pics of the cap must be looking good? Will post some pics of the latest project when I get a change ..........cheers

Dang!!!! Where did the time go?????? I crashed the CAP in December of 2007 and now its 2010. Well, I keep chipping away at her. The wing is covered, one aileron is bonded in place the other waiting to be bonded. The fuselage is in the covering phase, just need a few more odds and ends to get her airworthy again. Its been a fun project waiting in the wings so to speak. Shouldn't take much more to finish......(scroll up and I bet I said that already a time or two ) I'll get some pics up soon.

Happy rebuilds and hope all those projects out there are taking flight. In the end its worth the time to do it right and save weight along the way.

Tony

Tony been a long time, how's it going? A lot has happened, that 540 Edge with the DL 50 went in about 5weeks ago. That hurt .....................ouch I rolled over at about 100 foot into a straight dive, and that my friend was my last input. Straightest lawn dart I every saw, no elevator nothing I could do. Or should I say I couldn't think fast enough by the time I went to pull out......... nothing happening. I had been practicing I Mac pattern so the dive was induced the result was not.

Loss : Air frame
: DL 50 (sepperated the crank case )
: All servos
: 2.4 receiver
: Batteries
: Switches
Ok............. Ok.............. total loss except hardware
RIP Edge 540 you will be missed .................

So lucky I had a Great planes Su 31 ( 77" wing span ) sitting in a box. Had to purchase a DLE 55 for up front ( The up side to a loss is it means a new replacement must be found, and is a justified expense )
This one is now up and running and a worthy replacement. Flight characteristics are very nice, no surprises and does all it asked. As you would imagine verticle is unlimited. The math : some one posted the DLE 55 has 11klg static thrust I can only assume with a 21x8 prop. Well I am swinging a 20x10 ( ground clearance issues ) with a little less than 7 klg of plane. Equals all most too much power but a lot of fun

Any ways, where's the pics you don't get us waiting this long with out progress pics, maiden report, and a vid
Your coming into summer now ?? good flying wheather I hope. Here in OZ we have a lot of windy weekends in past months, but looking good now. Our winters are typically cold nights clear days little to no wind and shorts and tee shirt by smoko ( 9am ). Have you every noticed how it can be great flying wheather durring the week but come Sunday [>:][>:][>:] dam you Huey God of wind and rain .................

Good to hear you are still kicking and looking forward to the return of the CAP !!!!!!

Hey Tony was just reading your member jacket, had never realised you did the Heli thing.
I started Heli's about 12 months ago, now have a Trex 450 pro and Trex 600 nitro. These toys can get expensive $$$$$$ but heaps of fun ................no wonder you haven't finished the cap yet...........ha ... ha

Recovering the Ole CAP 232

One year after my last post I have finally got around to covering the CAP and made quite a bit of progress the last week or so. Started dabbling in the Windex method of trim application and am quite pleased with the overall outcome. I reapplied some of the lettering using the Windex, glassplate and "Press n Seal" to apply the final design. So wish I had known about this method years ago.

I was looking for something to put at the lower wing center section that would be fitting to my rebuild project. In keeping with the rising from the ashes theme I chose the rising Phoenix and cut it from black Monokote. I'm thrilled with how it came out! Hoping to be up to flying status very very soon. Just need to connect the aileron servos, repaint the cowling and attach the canopy.

I also built a home made fiberglass helmet as the new pilot of this CAP. The helmet was shaped from Styrofoam and then fiberglassed. The foam was then hollowed out leaving only the fiberglass shell. Relatively light weight I'm hoping it does the job.

I'll post a few photos on this post shortly.

Praying for the time to get a test flight in soon.

Tony

Wow its been a long time since this thread popped up ! the plane is looking good...

I can't believe you made your own helmet ! I thought those things were cheap and easy to buy these days ! Great job on it though ! I love seeing scratch built stuff that looks so nice...

Yup, I'm bound and determined to keep this thread alive till I get the flipp'n thing in the air again. I guess the thing that really got my blood boiling to rebuild it was the ARF pilot who asked me if I wanted to "throw it in the trash" as I carried it back to the bench after the crash..........".HUH?!?!?!?!??" thought I..........feeling as though the gauntlet had been thrown!

THEMS FIGHT'N WORDS SON!!!!! [>:]

Just rebuilt the OS FS-48 in my Four Star Fourty which was amazingly successful so thats kinda spurred me to get this CAP finished. I am also happy with how the helmet came out, it was very easy to free hand it out of a piece of Styrofoam and glass like a surfboard. Not sure how well it will hold up but its worth a try. I find that I'm always more proud of what I build than what I buy already finished. Something my old man instilled in me long long ago.

I'll try my best to keep this momentum up till the very end.

As always, thanks for the undying support!

Tony

PS. Connected the ailerons this morning so she's one step closer to flight ready...........and the controls are going the correct direction, another plus!
