Good luck with the maiden. It might take several flights before you get the mixture dialed in, that is why running a couple tanks on the ground are recommended. Setting the high end mixture with the nose up, you should be able to quickly [split second] pinch the fuel line without having the engine sag or die.

Another thing to ask. It is pretty cold up here. Usually around 10-20 in winter. Is this going to have to wait until spring? Kevin

Didn't mean to confuse anyone earlier with the comments about car engine lube vs plane lube, just pointing out an old argument I always see. For sure, there are real differences in the amounts of oil required in each due to the different usage and running profile, but they will both be damaged by running too lean or too little oil, that was my intended point(that, and the folly of professing that too much oil damages engines, yes, I've actually heard people say this). Mr Mugen, I think you know better than a lot of the car guys on this forum. Your 30%/14% and 20%/18% nitro is pretty near what I like to run in my car engines. FWIW, on the Norvels I ran I found that keeping it several clicks on the rich side of peak was necessary until broken in. They definitely lean out somewhat in the air.

[edit] Oh yeah, you might want to seal the exhaust with a little bead of high temperature silicone around the outside rim of the exhaust port--my .061s blew ridiculous quantities of spent fuel and exhaust out around there until I siliconed it--do it just prior to clipping the muffler on and wipe off the excess(clean well beforehand, obviously) and you should get a good seal.

Mr. Mugen: It shouldn't be a problem, just preheat the engine to at LEAST room temperature, preferably warmer prior to attempting starting--less wear on the piston/cyl at startup and less chance of locking up and bending the rod...

I was wondering how good these springs were that held the mufflers on. It doesn't take much to pull it away from the jug. I will wire mine up pre-break in.

Kevin --

The endcap on the NORVEL muffler is prone to rotating and working loose while the engine is running. I've had one pop completely out while flying, but luckily the front and rear parts stayed attached to the spring. I've been setting the exhaust outlet at the angle I want, then using a thin application of JB Weld to fix it in place. Once there, it's stuck and can't be removed. You might want to just safety wire it ala CP's suggestion, but be sure you get both ends.

I added 1 oz to a quart. Is that going to be sufficient?

Well I got it to start a few times but am having a hell of a time tuning it. I noticed some seepage from the glow plug area and removed it and made sure no debree was in there and retightened it. What is a normal starting point for the hsn? Is the needle to the right just a idle needle or does it control low speed mix?

Is 1 and 1/4 turns out about close? It seems to run great there but no idle. Still see some seepage from glow plug. Is this normal?

Mr. Mugen, if you can provide me with your email address, i will forward you a bunch of helpful articles/documents that copied off the old Norvel webpage. I even have the engine sounds in mp3 format, too.

I am a novice myself so can't help you with any of your questions.

I wish this pc had micro soft office....grrrr.

How many shims should be under this head? I have 2 and they are both in bad shape. Any place to order new ones from? How about spare glow heads?

You can order shims, Galbreath heads and NELSON plugs from Larry Driskill at Kitting It Together. The Galbreath head/NELSON plug will give performance equal to or better than the original head, plus there are readily available replacements. The NELSON plug is pretty tough and long lived.

You should not have leakage around the plug. This is usually due to a rough plug seat or shims with burrs or rolled edges. You can dribble a little fuel over the plug and base of the head, then turn your engine to top dead center. If there are bubbles, then you need to either clean up the shims or plug base or replace the shims.

Your engine should run well with a single shim.

I have 2 Norvels that I bought brand new. They both had mangled shims, like they had been put in crooked, then the head screwed down, pinching them, and making them not seal properly. Luckily, I bought a few spares when they were available. But I've found that for the 15% nitro I run them on, 1 shim is fine.

When it comes to providing information pertaining to an alternative to the scarce Cox and Norvel heads, i commend your patience and resolve; you have provided a lifeline to the many despondent.

Moreover, i have sent you a PM.
