Well,
Even If it comes out a little heavier than Id like its worth it . Updated price today:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSMK2&P=0

Me thinks Tower is unloading the Lanier brand for the transition to Great Planes. Keep your eyes open for possibly deeper discounts.

I flew the 87 inch yak for a season with a 3W 70 and although a great flyer was a bit heavy when compared to my TOC/SD 30% Yak. I know the 87” edge was a much more acceptable weight (around 17 pounds) so I’m hoping the bigger Edge follows suit.

I’m pulling the trigger on this plane as well as the 40% edge kit at $399 today (my second). So flagging this thread.
Keep up the great work bmadden!

Tower has this now for 349.99. 25 bucks off and add 45 for shipping you got it for 369.99. Mines on the way. It'll build much later though. Looking forward to seeing yours fly(Yak too).

These things will not last long. UPS dropped mine off a few days ago. I hope to start on mine soon.

I'm thinking about buying another one to have as a spare! Also, if you don't already have your onboard battery packs, I recommend going with a 2 cell lipo to power your airplanes. The lipo batteries are lighter, and the lipo outputs current better when your servos need it.

I've got 2 Fromeco Relion 2600s on the way already
The Smart Fly unit I am using is made for lipo/liion
It looks like it will work nice.

I may have the Edge but I have a few others to put together before I do it. I have a Great Planes Patty Wagstaff and an Ultimate plus a couple others that will be glow. It doesn't look like we'll have twins.

About the batteries - have you done any looking at the A123 batteries.

I did consider the A123 batts. But I don’t know how they will work with the smart fly system. If you look at the voltage range in the 123s it is very narrow (don’t know what it is off the top of my head). And I don’t know how that will come into play with the regulators on the smart fly. Not to mention I’d have to go get a whole new Battery charger and tester. So I went with the relions to play it safe. Just about the same weight.

So if you have the Extra this is a IOWRC wing nut I am talking to. Take your time and get that 80cc from Brillelli when it comes out.

Not to cause panic, but…… I just got off the phone with Great Planes. I was trying to get some of my money back (with no success so far). I asked the rep. if the kit was being discontinued. He said that it dose not show that it is being discontinued in his computer system at the moment, but the price drop is a good indicator that it may be coming. So if you are thinking about it, get it. If you have it, look over your contents and make sure you don’t need replacement parts before they run out.

Just my $.02

B-

Some quick last shots before I go to my club meeting:

I use good ‘ol unwaxed dental floss with a small drip of ca on the knots to connect my extensions

If you don’t know this, you can get lots of servo screws cheap from RTL fasteners

For my extensions I chose to color code with extensions from Cermark. This way I know the same servo gets plugged into the same spot each time I fly. I used an 18” yellow on the outer aileron servo and 6” green on the inner. I used blue and red on the other wing. I connected corresponding 6” extensions to the smart fly. About ½ way threw I realized that this is unnecessary with the smart fly. Oh well it still looks cool. If you are using two receivers or some other method, it is something you can consider.

I want to thank bmadden for his build thread and pics so far. I enjoy all of them and find them very informative.

The A123 batts. are good and I agree that unless Smart Fly says their equipment is compatible with them than you should go with what Smart Fly says they work with.

The Li-Ions are good too and can output current better than most NiMh.

Do you guys think using a power distribution box such as the Smart Fly or Emcotec is necessary for this airplane? Is it just a better way to go? I guess it would help out with the servo matching that is going to be required on the ailerons, rudder and possibly the elevators.

What influenced my decision to use the Smart fly the most was the fact that it provides a constant 5.0 volts to the receiver. I am using the Spektrum AR7000 receiver. As you probably know Spektrum receivers are prone to loss of control due to voltage dips. They sell what I believe is a capacitor to combat the problem. My gripe about that is that you don’t know that it has failed until it is too late. The Smart Fly has an L.E.D. to let you know each component is working.

Other cool things that made it a must have for me are:
Dual batteries and duel regulators 5v for rec. 6v for servos
Signal filtering
Fiber optic ignition cut off controlled from the transmitter

All that said, I don’t feel that I had to have the Smart Fly. It is mostly wow factor that I found a good excuse to buy. But, I would not fly this plane without a redundant battery system. That’s just me. One thing I learned quick in this hobby is that if you ask the same question to ten different people you will get ten different answers.

The Smart Fly will also support lithium polymer batteries. But I am far too lazy to yank the batteries out of my plane each time I charge. So the lithium ions look like my ticket.

My buddy Jeff, who has one on the way, said he was trying to get an idea of the size. So that last pic is for you Jeff. By the way I’m 5’9" and some change and the plane still needs a spinner. And yes….. I will make my super sexy body available for your photo shoot at the right price.

Brian
