2008 RDRC Fly-for-Tots OUTLAW INVASION
Well, the Outlaw Invasion at the 2008 RDRC Fly-for-Tots event in Raleigh, NC was a huge hit! Team Outlaw pilots Larry Lewis, Jay Benson, and I were joined by 15 other Outlaw drivers on Saturday for a wild and fun flight! We behaved a little better than normal for this particular flight in the interest of crowd safety so although there were a couple of casualties, there were no midairs. And the spectators loved it! So the new record for Outlaws being flown at once now stands at 18. And records are made to be broken!

Thanks goes out to Chris Hinson at Extreme Flight RC for providing the cool commemorative T-shirts for all the participants. Good stuff!

Status: offline 		I am trying to program elevons on an Outlaw using the 6AXS. I've programed elevons before but I am having a problem that I can't figure out.
I have everything mechanically setup as close as possible to get the 1 1/4" throws that I need on high rates.. I get 1 1/4" when I use up or down elevator and 1 1/4" if I use left or right ailerons. The problem is if I put the stick to one of the corners like full up elevator and full left aileron, I get more than the original 1 1/4" of travel and the servo arm cant move any further. On low rates it's not a problem. I've tried setting the ATV's but it doesn't help. Any suggestions ??

The elevon can't go past 45 deg because of the hinges. My question is what do the instructions mean when they say 45 degrees on the elevons? What are you suppose to measure? Do you measure the elevator, the aileron. or the deflection with the stick in the corner?

On low rates, I have 15 deg. on the elevator and 15 deg. on the ailerons. If I put the stick in the corner, I have about 30 deg. on one of the elevons and the other is neutral. That is how I understand it is suppose to work. However, if I have 45 deg. on the elevator and 45 deg. on the ailerons, the elevon would want to move to 90 deg. if the stick is pushed into the corner and it can't.

I know there is a simple answer, since there are so many Outlaws out there. I think I'm just having a brain fart.
If it's easier to explain over the phone, please PM me and I can call you or you can call me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Larry this is all normal. The only way not to bind the servo with the stick in the corner is to reduce throws. Since you really want a screaming roll rate and the Outlaw doesn't really do anything special with elevator (you can get it to do some funky flips though) I suggest that on high rates you reduce the elevator throw a bit.


You'll also note when you put the stick in the corner the other elevon goes close to centered. On my scratch built Outlaws I make the elevons so they will deflect more than 45deg. But even then they bind with the stick in the corner. Use good servos, I had a servo go bad from binding because of this. Also you'll find the oOutlaw has a great roll rate and you'll be doing lots of rolls, it doesn't really do anything special in the loop department. Snaps and flat spins are great so you will be burying the sticks into the corners. So now that you know you'll be binding the servo you'll be more apt to limit the time you have the servo in bind and heating up....

Status: offline 		This is normal when full travel is set to full up/down and full right/left. When the stick is in the corner you can over drive the servos. A solution is to limit travel so it is only full in the corners. Another suggestion is to use a 'cyclic ring'. This is a plastic ring installed on the radio that limits physical stick travel to a circle around the middle. It is commonly used by heli flyers on the cyclic (right) stick, hence the name.

Status: offline 		Short of going with a shorter connection point at the servo, the ATV's do not only "help" but more precisely they are exactly what you need, to limit servo travel to stop overdriving your end points with the sticks in the corner.
Overdriving a servo (or linkage) mechanical endpoint is the ultimate recipe for in flight failure.

Status: offline 		Installing a Rossi 40 is doable but not advisable. I did it with a 53. I managed to balance the plane by placing the batteries and 160 gr of lead in a hatch in front of the trailing edge. You will have to split the engine mount in half so that the motor can fit. I'm not sure it is worth the effort though and the plane won't go any faster than with a 36. Mine showed 197 kph on the radar with an apc 9x9. I think mainly due to the thick airfoil.
