Tom,

I presently have the Su-26 50cc. I just joined IMAC and I am looking for your opinions on the best airframe of the 2 listed. I really like the looks of both planes. My first gasser was a GP Wagstaff Extra300S. I really like the looks of the plane and like the cowl on it much better than the 260. I also really like the Sukhois. I have a DA-100 for which ever plane I wind up with.

Hmmm! That's a tough question. Let me explain the differences from my perspective.

First, both are excellent IMAC planes, both have won several events in IMAC. You will not pay any penalty for choosing one over the other.

My first advice is to pick the one whose looks you like, they are that close. But if that doesn't work, here's my opinion.

The Sukhoi is a slightly smaller plane. I think of it as more of a hot rod for 3d. The Extra is a little larger and seems to me to be more graceful. It is, however, also the best 3d 35% plane going, bar none. It's just a little slower in all its motions.

The Sukhoi will slow down better on a down line with that big round cowl out front, whereas the Extra is a very clean design that does not willingly give up air speed.

Which of these descriptions fits your flying style better? You see more Extras in IMAC, but that is mostly because there has never been a really good Sukhoi design before ours.

First, I think a jump to the 100cc size will make a big difference in the way any plane flies... bigger definitely flies better. It'll definitely fly slower through the sequence giving you time to think through what you've got to do as you compete.

I own two of Tom's 40% Extra's. Great flying planes.... No bad habits, slows way down, etc. The 35% looks to be a slightly smaller version of the same plane, so I'd anticipate it'll fly very, very similar. Probably roll and fly slightly faster than the 40% size that I fly, but great flying airplane. I own several Yaks as well in the 150cc sized space and will be competing next year also and plan to use the Extra over the Yak's. The extra definitley flies a little "cleaner," seems to build more speed through the manuevers, etc. I guess for me, it seems to fly more "crisp." The round fuse's of the Yaks seem to keep the plane very, very slow through everything... After saying all of that though... the extra flies very well in any of the 3d stuff also... Huge ailerons let it stop actually torque roll to the right if you'd like. It flies very light on the wings, etc.

Having said that, I also just finished up a 35% Sukhoi from Tom. Haven't flown it yet, but plan to over the next week or so. Just like the other Wildhare planes I've purchased, it is a good quality build, love the pocket hinges, etc. Expect it to fly great also... probably more like a Yak that an extra. Big, fat front end that will slow the plane down to a crawl on the downlines... the good news is that it'll give more time to think through your manuevers probably since it'll slow down that much more, particularly downlines... It has huge surfaces just like my extras so I anticipate that it'll 3D very well also.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like further details, build advice, etc. Either way, I think you'll be happy. Maybe as Tom suggested.... buy whichever you think looks better!

So do I, but two planes in a box don't quite equal one great flyer!! Couldn't afford another engine and servos and electronics to outfit 2 at this time..... Unless Tom is feeling generous and has a twofer sale going on....

This is one tought decision. I have had a few H9 Sukhois and just love the way they fly... But the extra just looks so good...

If it were my choice and I could only have one, I would choose the extra. Keep it light, and the perforance is world class. You can't go wrong with a wild hare.(and no, I have no affiliation with wild hare) just my 2 cents worth

My IMAC mentor told me something about picking a model to fly that I think is applicable here;

"If you like a model, you'll probably fly it better than one you don't like".

I think that's probably true and while I've had a more than cursory look at the Suks, I'm still flyin Extras although one Edge has found it's way into the mix...

I always try to remember that this hobby is supposed to be about having fun, and it's more fun to take out a model you really like than it is one you got because it was supposed to "fly better". Now there are exceptions, but for the most part different models from the same manufacturer will all do the job. Whether you pick one of Tom's Suks or the Extras, they'll both fly well so get the one you think is the prettiest...

Good advice! Get the one you like best, you are likely to practice more which is the big item.

I'm over in Enid... If you'd like to check out my Sukhoi you're more than welcome to stop by one weekend. If the wind calms down (ever) we'll take it out to the field. You can give it a go and see what you think.

Somethnextra, I appreciate that very much. I agree with you on the winds wholeheartedly. Nothing like a 70°+ day in January and facing 20mph+ and gusts to 30 to day no fying today!

As far as looks and likes, I have always been hooked by round cowl planes. Starting with my first love, the F4U Corsair. There are 3 of the WH Sukhois at one of the local fields here in Tulsa (Broken Arrow), and man are they gorgeous and fly very well. All 3 are pretty much set up exactly like I am planning for my next airframe. DA-100, Hitec 5955's, Smart Fly Power Expander, smoke. Hopefully I can make up my mind on the airframe in the next month and get started.

On the big Suk, are there 2 stab positions like on the little Suk?
