I too had to make up the 1/4" at the top of the fuselage. The change we made in the airfoil caused the wing to stick up about an extra 1/4". I traced the fuse rib onto a piece of 1/4" ply to get the lower shape. Then I installed the wing and traced the wing onto the plywood and got a piece that looks like an eyebrow. Cut two and epoxy them on. I will add a photo when RCU is feeling better

I will finish the wing panel lines today and I have started the fuse panel lines. I just ordered the graphics from Kirby Kustom Graphics. I hope to be painting the plane white this weekend.

Here is the photo of the fuse fix. I guess RCU is feeling better.

I See it, I Got it, thanks Charlie. I may add an additional eyebrow down the middle to support the top cabin window frame from sagging and further supporting the replica antenna attached there. Chic

I have been working on the panel lines all this week and I am nearly finished. I hope to paint the plane white on Saturday or Sunday. If the weatherman is right we will have temperatures near 60 degrees. The plane will not win any contests but it looks pretty good for a rehab.

I am in the process of starting Roy's 1/4 BD. Plans, full wood kit from PKC, cowl gear etc. all ordered. This is my second plans-only kit. Just finished Hostetler's Piper Pawnee. So far,in addition to the Pawne, I have a GS TF P-47, GS TF-P51,Balsa USA SE 5a, and a GS Stenson SR -9 hanging on the wall. Don't know where I will hang the Dog but here goes anyway. I thought that I would use either a Ralph Cunningham G-62 or a DLE-55. Any thoughts? I have had some concerns on how to build the fuselage since it can't be built over the plans, but redtail assures me that it is easy to keep it square and true. Thank all of you for this great thread. I am sure it will be a great help. BTW,did Roy come thru Sandy OK. Just looked up Farmervill on G-maps and it looks like he could of had some problems. I will post pictures when I am further along.

After a side discusssion with redtail about the importance of building in the 1 1/2 deg. washout in the outer wings, I decided to check by building board.. Guess what, I found about 1 deg. of twist in it... Could have caused problems with this plane, and probably has been built into some of my previous ones...Fred123

I have noticed that most of the engines used in this plane have been side carbs like g38 or g62s. I would like to use a DLE 55 with its rear carb. Have any of you used this engine? How about any modifications you did to accommodate it. What muffler did you use etc. Thanks. Fred123

Hi Fred, Welcome to the thread. You will find all of the thread contributors to be very helpful. I have used the Zenoah G-62 on both of my Birddogs. With the proper standoffs I wouldn't think the rear carb will be a problem.

I have been working on my Birddog rehab all week and have made some progress. I got it painted white last week and the graphics arrived on Monday. It feels good when the graphics start going on and the plane starts to look like the finished model. I will finish adding the graphics this week and get ready to paint the red on the next warm day. Hopefully before spring.

Beautiful plane Firebar. This is the color scheme I plan on using. What paint did you use? Panel lines or rivets? Who did your graphics? Thanks. Fred123

Fred, I have been using Klass Kote paints for the past several years. I like working with the epoxy paints. Once they are dry they do not soften with thinner. They are no more expensive than the PPG paints and Klass Kote will mix the Federal colors for you.

I do my panel lines with several coats of sandable primer from the auto store. I draw out the lines, mask them with Great Planes flex mask, and cover the edge with masking tape for spraying. This method makes the panel lines go quickly. I am saving my riveting patience for my Ziroli Beechcraft. The Birddog is just for Sunday flying.

Thanks Peter. Your Avenger is really becoming a work of art.

We got a few warm days this weekend so I got busy and got the plane masked for the last color. Now I am on the home stretch installing the engine and accessories. I hope get the first flight at our club Frost Fly on Jan 1.

Chic, how is your build coming along?

Firebar, see that you are using klass Kote paints. Are your colors a custom mix or one of their standard military colors. Is the light color white or gray?fred123

I used their #105 white tint base, then added a little black and a very small amount of yellow to move the color off of white. That gave me the off white color I needed. I had Klass Kote make a red for me but it wasn't as bright as I wanted. I got the local PPG store to make a flat, bright red for me and it worked out pretty well.
How is your Dawg coming?

Got the plans from Roy. For now, just waiting on Precision for the wood. It should be here by mid Jan. I have ordered cowl, gear, tailwheels and 1/16 angle (15 packages@$86). Really like Roy's plans. They are clear and straight forward. With your pictures and Roy's CD the build should go OK.

Fred, Charlie, Noah, and to all, Merry Xmas. Hoping to fiberglass the newly built wing panels and primer this week. The cabin extensions are in place. Will post photos. Firebar, that DAWG looks great. You are a wonderful inspiration. Chic

Redtail, I noticed from reading earlier posts that one of you discussed using "thinned epoxy" to glass. I have used the epoxy kits, polyester resin, and water based polyurethane.. Could you explain how to use the thinned epoxy. I was going to use polyurethane again, but am having second thoughts. Fred123

I am kinda bummed today after checking on the status of my wood order from PKC . They originally quoted 5 to 6 weeks. Looks like now delivery will be more like 8 to 9. I know Larry has a good reputation in the community, just wish there were more options.
I ordered a DLE 55 yesterday from tower. With the members discount got it for $309 + free shipping. Hard deal to beat. Also got my order from Roy for a cowl, gear, figure etc. All looked good. With people of his skill and dependiability our hobby is here to stay.

I am making slow but steady progress on my Dawg. I have been fitting the muffler to the cowling, installing the receiver, batteries etc. and programming the transmitter.

Fred. I usually use thinned epoxy to apply the .5 oz. cloth to my planes. I mix Zpoxy or similar finishing epoxy, 50/50 per the instructions. Then cut the epoxy 50% with 91% alcohol. The thinned mixture glues the fiberglass cloth to the sheeting. I spread the epoxy with a credit card. The next step is where the different opinions come in. Most modelers use a second coat of epoxy, not thinned, to fill the glass cloth. I use a few coats of sandable primer to fill the cloth. Which do you think is heavier, epoxy or primer? Which do you think is easier to sand, epoxy or primer?

I like your idea of just using the epoxy to stick down the glass and give a hard surface and then using high-build primer to fill the weave. I have used Zpoxy before at full strength, two coats, and felt it was very heavy. This method should produce a lighter finish. I talked to Roy today about other kit cutter options. He really did not have any. I was glad to find out that he did not suffer any damage from Sandy,in fact did not even lose power. Fred

Happy New Year to everyone. Can't wait for this year to pass. I am a bit off my game, I just buried my Father over Xmas. Recently returned home and got back out into the workshop late last night to do some work and clear my head. Showing the top caps (smile - sunroof) of the DAWG. The rear cap will be permanently mounted. The front cap will be removable in order to get at the wing bolts and wiring. Notice how the front cap curls around the leading edge (wet and wrap the plywood around the L/E and leave in place for a day or so). A button head bolt will attach the curl section to the bottom of the wing by installing a hardwood block into the bottom sheeting. Six or so button head 4/40 bolts will attach the remainder of the front top cap into wood inserts on the top of the wing to ease install/removal. The button heads will match the other button heads installed around the windows. Chic
