Status: offline 		I made the windshield brace and the diagonal braces that extend from the top of the instrument panel to the wing roots tonite. The windshield brace is made from 1/32 thick by 1/4 wide brass, doubled and soldered together. I used the wooden brace as a guide to bend the curve in each piece of brass separately, then soldered them together and bent the ends to make tabs that I can drill and mount them with a #0 screw. The brace is very stiff; it CAN be bent, but with the windshield on top of it, and a thinner piece on the outside of the windshield, it should be fairly strong. I have some 1/64 by 1/4 brass for the outside piece. I will drill everything and use some #00 brass screws to hold them together. So there won't be a small hump where the windshield crosses the tabs, I inset them into the wood.

The diagonal braces are made from 5/32 diameter brass tubing. I made two angled tabs from 1/64 brass and clamped them in the top corners at former #3 and clamped a long piece of 1/32 x 1/4 across the front of the fuse. The I cut the tubing with a Dremel cutoff wheel and little by little ground the angles and lengths until the tubing pieces fit between the angles and the center piece; then I soldered them in place and built a nice fillet on each end. When I unclamped the pieces, they stayed in place, the fit was perfect. Then I trimmed the center piece into a small plate that will get drilled and screwed to the top of the instrument panel, and the top tabs will get screwed in place also.

Status: offline 		Haven't done much the last couple of days. I made the servo rails for the rudder and elevator servos. I'm using Futaba 9206 servos for both. They're metal gear, coreless and have 132 oz/in torque at 4.8V and are standard size. I figure they ought to be plenty powerful for this plane; it has large tail surfaces, but I don't have to worry about large control surface excursions or a lot of rapid direction changes as I would in an aerobatic plane. The servos in the picture aren't them (haven't bought them yet), I just used a couple I had for the photo.

These will be almost hidden by the rear seat, and shouldn't be noticeable at all. I haven't decided on the throttle servo location yet; either out on the firewall in the engine bay, or under the floor where the receiver will be. If there, the cable linkage can still be completely concealed. I'm still fretting over the engine. I mocked up a mount for the ZDZ (didn't make pics) and it will be a challenge due to the rear carb. Very little clearance between the carb throat and the fuel tank and fuel lines, I'll have to get creative. Still considering the small twin.

Rick, I've found two places that sell it; it's Chinese made. United Hobbies has it for $325, ignition and mufflers INCLUDED, one year warranty. Another place, www.lsproengines.com also has it, and they say on their site that they are the importer and the engine is made for them; they want $470 for it. Guess where I'll order mine from.

I have e-mailed LS Pro, and he says he can put a smaller plug on it and decrease the overall dimensions even more, for $50 more dollars (requires a different plug cap on the wires from the module). I have also e-mailed a guy who rated it 5 stars out of 6 on the United website. He sent me a video of the engine running, sounds great. He thinks it is a steal at United's price.

It makes 4.2 hp, weighs 3.75 pounds WITH the module and mufflers, turns up to 9000 rpm and will spin a 22-8 prop at over 7000 rpm. It has reed valve induction. Side to side it's only about 8-1/2 inches wide, so it will fit inside the B-Dog's cowl without cutting it, but I don't know how much overhead clearance I need for the spark plug caps to clear the top of the cowl. This is the only thing keeping me from ordering it tomorrow. I need to e-mail that one guy and get some more measurements from him, he was very helpful. The only other thing is that United Hobbies says they are out of stock and won't have any more until mid Feb, and they sell all they get. It's the smallest twin I've found, but would have plenty of juice for the 'Dog.

Status: offline 		Very nice looking engine. How nice would it be to have a t?in gasser completely hidden inside the cowl?! IF I ever find a Bird Dog of my own, I'd like to go with this engine, as well. Thanks for the info, and keep those build pics coming!

Status: offline 		Rick, I've been cruising the gas engine forum trying to get more info on this engine. It's too much an unknown quantity for me to risk it. I found a couple of better pictures of it, and it looks like the plugs will stick up too far to fit the engine without the plugs interfering with the top of the cowl. I would love to put a twin in this plane, but the Roto 50 Twin is too wide, and 3W discontinued its small twin (it was also too wide, and WAAAY too much $$$$$).

I think I'm just going to see how well I can work out a mount for this ZDZ 50NG. The rear carb creates some issues, but I think I can work around it. I know this engine and its record.

Well, there's always glow . Maybe the flat 4 OS?

Status: offline 		AIRPLANENUTS, I can testify that the Z-45 fits perfectly within the cowl. I have one in the one I'm building as seen on Ken's build thread. Nothing is sticking out except the two exhausts tips of the Pitts style muffler. Hope you find a "Dawg". Chic
