fw190,

The current plastic rotor head is a bit mushy.

I just started noticing that the blade grips have some slop, play, in them.
They move up and down a little when I lift the main blades up.
Is this what you are talking about? Is it normal for this heli?

I was about to take the blades off and see if the socket head cap screws that hold the grips on are loose or if the feathering shaft is bent.

What do you think?

I noticed this as well. I took the blades off and noticed that when I tighten down the screws into the feathering shaft that they bottom out before they tighten on the blade grips. It's kinda far away, so the grips have some room to float around a bit.

I would assume some tolerance would be needed so the grips could rotate, but there seems to be an excessive amount of gap. You'll notice that in photos of the B400, the blades droop down at an angle from the head. I think this is unfortunately normal.

I guess if I was better at heli's this might be a big concern, but since I'm just starting out I wouldn't know how a good heli is supposed to feel like.

Torque,

Thanks for the input. It's good to know that it's just the way they are.
Also, that's where added dampening shims go (page 40, Blade 400 manual).
So I guess for added response one would stiffen that up.
I'm not ready for that yet, so I won't worry about it.

Well I crunched my B400, I was trying to hold an invert and my noobness really got the best of me, I almost recovered but was only 2.5 mistake high, heli was almost upright when ground bit. I had to replace rotor blades, tail blades, two servos, feathering shaft and blade grips. I hit it pretty hard but since I had a fiberglass canopy it protected the battery, the landing gear is very strong and it really helped absorbed the impact. Had all the parts replaced but could not find the blade grips at my LHS. Too eager to fly again I ended up replacing the entire tail to a Trex CNC tail. The parts fit is exact over the stock boom. The metal tail helped with CG as it was pretty nose heavy with 2200mah battery.

Just for note, I did calipered the main shaft and its identical in size to the Trex 450. So you can use some of the parts expect for the lower swash plate as the Trex is revesered 120 ccpm to the Eflite's 120 ccpm. But I could be wrong because Trex made all kinds of version. I havent broke any of my plastic head parts but when I do will try and change them out to metal

Dear FW190, I am a proud owner of the blade 400. She seems to fly very well. I was wondering if you had the part number or source for the trex cnc tail. I am not certain if there are different sizes or part numbers to pick from. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I found this one and its identical to the one I have , much cheaper than what I paid.

http://www.cnchelicopter.com/servlet/the-83/3dx450-T-dsh-REX-450X-fdsh-XL-fdsh-SE-helicopte/Detail

and another, they say copterx is interchangeable with Trex parts.

If I total my B400 deemed unrepairable I will probably end up getting this heli.... and put my electronics on it.

That first link looks like a good price. The 2nd link looks even better in price but it looks like it might still be using some plastic linkages. Am I wrong? The first link looks like it's all aluminum.

I actually paid close to $100 for mine at a LHS, when I need to fly its a must fix else I start a withdrawal syndrome from not flying !

I don't mind the not all metal parts, gotta give some parts a breaking point or else all be bent instead

Small tip for the blade 400.If you ever changed the mainshaft on the blade 400 then you know how much of a pain the nut is under the gear.Well here is a tip i used and it works great.Get some crazy glue the brush type.Apply some to the base of the nut let it dry then unscrew your screw. Now when you install it all you have to do is push the screw in and screw. The nut will not move around.

Every mechanical device I've ever worked on has had a PITA nut or bolt. I nominate that nut as the PITA nut for the B400.

It seems that there is a lot of comparison to a Trex 450 with this new helicopter. I would say that this helicopter is nice as it is. It flies well out of the box and it is definitely a great step after a blade CP or other lower model.

I've been at heli's for about 2 and 1/2 years and a bunch of us posted a forum on here of the Trex 450 versus the MX400 Pro.
