Has anybody built the Ziroli F4U, and if so is this a good plane that could be built to scale detail?

Dave,

I have a prejudiced view, but the Ziroli F4U is one of my best sellers. Many kits that people buy will sit on the shelf for many years waiting for the modeler to "get around to it", but I have sold so many corsairs and recieved many photos of them from my customers that I can say that they do in fact fly, and fly well. It is also a contest winning scale design. (much of that also depends on the modeler).

Can you tell me if the plans are of the -1 series or are they from a later version? From the photos that I saw of it the canopy looks more like a -5 series. Can you tell me more please.

They are the -1 series.

My best advice is too have a look at the plans.

It is a one piece wing that with a 94" wing span. (although I had one that was modified for a three piece wing)

I can see now why you are biased in your opinon of the plane. How long have you been making the kit for, and do you take special request for minor modifications?

Dave,

I have been producing that kit for over 10 years. I will certainly listen to any modifications that you might want to make and give you my best opinion and effort on it.

I'm building a Ziroli Corsair wright now. I changed the one piece wing into a three piece wing for better transportation.
I'm made some pictures of the building proces. If you want them I'll be glad to send them to you.

I have built 5 Ziroli Corsairs, building my 6th (the big 13 footer) now....love 'em. Only crashed one. Sold the other 4. Smart eh? Sell only to have to build another...go figure. A friend of mine wants to modify a Ziroli to the F2G race version...that would be KOOL. I can vouch for Mace at Aeorplane works. If I don't cut them, Aeroplane is the only kit cutter I will use. Great quality...better than most.

NICE photo guts........

I have the Ziroli plan. I will build one of these. I really like the looks of it, and it is very accurate except in the following areas. The first areas it has problems is the cowl and firewall. The cowl is shaped like a can and is to long, and the firewall needs a 1/2" balsa ring around it to get the proper rounded shape down to and under the cowl flap. The one other major thing is the top of the nose in front of the canopy all the way to the cowl. Former's F-3, F-4, F-5 and F-6 are the wrong shape. F-6 being the most off of all of them. The nose should not be a round circle all the way back, it's hard to describe. The TF kits suffer in this area too. Looking at it, you just know something isn't right. They look ok and fly great from what I hear, and these changes will be minor outline changes anyway.

Disclaimer:

This is MY OPINION, I love Ziroli plans but I am a bit of a perfectionist. If you like it the way it is, well good for you!

I want to build mine as the F2G also, Mace, can you make the mods to your cuttings for that? such as a flat turtledeck for a bubble canopy (ala late P-47) and longer cowl/pushed back firewall? I can go over my plans and send you a list and sketches if you'd like

Thanks guys. I am convinced when the funds become available this will be my next project. Has anyone ever use the O.S FR5-300 Sirius radial engine for this plane?

Hi Dave 617,

You can't go wrong with a Ziroli Corsair. Mine was cutout by All American Kit Cutters. They did a good job.

It's powered by a Brison 5.8 single and really hauls.

If you are interested I have a complete set of "how to" photos and instructions if you want to build a 3 piece wing. I highly recommend it because it makes field assembly very easy because the center wing section stays attached. Just send me your e-mail address.

Ken
