DonStegall -> World's Fastest Sky Raider Mach II? (1/6/2008 1:30:04 PM)

I will be test flying a new Sky Raider Mach II today. There is something special about this one. It has a Quickie JETT (428) engine on the front. It has a RED JETT carb so I can throttle it back if it is too fast. [:D]

This plane is definitely not Club 40 legal. I did a lot of reinforcing and took a lot of precautions to handle the expected extra speed. I used gap seal tape on all of the control surfaces to hopefully avoid flutter.

Nice.... I have a LA Racer with a OS 61 on it an waiting for warm weather to try it out. I bet yours will haul azz.

Ronnie

Edit.. What size an pitch prop are you using on that

DonStegall -> RE: World's Fastest Sky Raider Mach II? (1/6/2008 3:58:59 PM)

I'm using an APC 9.5x7 Pylon prop.

I put 3 flights on the plane. The last one was down on the course on my 348'x348'x100' 3 pole course. It's almost too fast for that size of course. I need at least an AMA Short Course.

It flies great. I didn't pull any really hard turns, but everything held up fine.

I replaced the stab with a solid 1/4" piece. I was afraid the pull of the engine would break the stab in the safety yoke. I might have been right, because it really pulls when it's on the pipe.

The first takeoff was aborted because the engine quit as it came on the pipe. I was starting from an idle. But after landing I could taxi back.

I would say the top speed is 125 mph to 130 mph.

You need gap seal tape to keep from having aileron flutter at this speed.

Looks good Don... Just wondering if the LA Racer will do any better because of the more rounded fuz. It just looks more aerodynamic to me.

I went out to the flying site at Lowe's Motor Speedway and John Gibson flew the new SRM2, aka OranJETT, several times. For the last flight we switched to an APC 9x7.5 Pylon and it was even quicker. John thinks I can go to an even higher pitch. I didn't have a selection of pylon props on the trailer, and it was pretty windy, so that will come another day.

There was a flutter incident, but it wasn't with this plane. It was my yellow SRM2 that probably has 300+ flights on it. It turned out to be wearing of the tunnel where the aileron torque rod is. Didn't lose the plane, but it was loud. And it made me glad that I used gap seal tape on OranJETT.

OMG! You are a wildman Don.

I am pretty sure the LA racer with it's more streamlined fuse would give you about 10 - 15 MPH more than the 'Raider!
I am not sure the airframe would hold up for very long flying a tight course.

I'm just interested in straight line speeed on the LA Racer right now

Thanks. I think. ;)

I did a lot of prep work to make sure it had the best chance of survival. One thing I did not do is glass the center section of the wing. Based on crashed wings I decided that the joiner and spars do almost as well as glassing the center section would. Plus most guys aren't likely to do the center section.

The main reason I did it was because some people question me about it being able to handle sport .46 engines, possibly with tuned mufflers. Even though I have one set up that way, I wanted to go a little more extreme. And I had the Quickie JETT not being used on anything at the moment.

happypappy -> RE: World's Fastest Sky Raider Mach II? (2/19/2008 2:13:21 AM)

Have folded the wings on two of them so far with standard OS.46AX engines. By all means glass the center section!

I finaly got a chance to fly this plane again several times today. It is really cool flying a Sky Raider Mach II that zips along like this one does. Good high speed characteristics and with the Quickie JETT idling in the 3000 rpm range, landings are just like a regular SRM2.

David Glasscock, a new racer in this area, got to see it fly. I'm pretty sure he thought it was significantly faster than a Club 40 SRM2.

glasscock -> RE: World's Fastest Sky Raider Mach II? (6/29/2008 4:28:52 PM)

Don's Quickie JETT Sky Raider II is FFFFAAAAAASSSSSSTTTT!!! The reenforcements held up well. I espec. liked the gap-seal tape. Gives a nice smooth hinge gap and only adheres to the trailing edge of the wing, passively rests on the control surface. Don would have dealt with "flutter" had this not been added. The orange blur in the air was great to see. It'd be exciting to have a category of racing with this set-up. However, I would not want to risk a $300 engine on a tight pylon course with two others bumping and grinding.

The only problem I have run into with this plane is that I used the standard tank that comes with the Sky Raider Mach II. I had bought some JETT bubbleless tanks in a variety of sizes, but I thought I would try the standard tank first. It does ok until you start pulling tight turns. But pulling really tight turns starves the engine. So I will be putting a bubbleless tank in.

The other thing is that the engine has no mid-range. It is either full throttle and on the pipe, or at a low to fast idle. If the setting is too rich, the engine will cut-out when I throttle up and it comes on the pipe. So getting the engine tuned properly is important.

These planes are a hoot at the speed this one flies at. I haven't pulled a large number of tight turns because of the tank. But so far it is holding up. I will probably do another one and start with the ARC. I will put shear webs in every bay and I will glass the center section. I will also replace the stab with a solid 1/4" piece like this one. I will double the entire firewall with 1/4" plywood.

Don,

Let me know when you will be glassing the fuse. I'd like to see the process for future projects. Flew a few flights yesterday with the Menacing Molar. Today, flew a couple of mock two-pole races at Lowe's with LarryM. getting everything fine tuned for the Pylon Race next Saturday. I find that using 60% expo gives me more feel for the airplane.

Edited: Went back and read your post. I guess you will fiberglass reenforcement at the center wing section. Have you glassed a full wing or fuse? I'd like to see it done sometime. I get the basics, but would like to see some of the nuances.
